Chapter 20

"You did an excellent job on this research, Kifo," Hades said, setting the fourth file he'd read down.

"She's even completed over twenty files on The Ferrymen," Thanatos boasted, smiling proudly at me and causing me to blush.

"That is quite impressive. Has Thanatos been lax with your studies?"

"No. I just skipped a few nights of sleep to get the research on The Memitim done. The research on The Ferryman was assigned work on top of my duties here in the office and my field training."

"So he's overworking you," Anubis teased.

Thanatos flustered as he tried to protest the accusation.

Anubis and I laughed at his distress, and Hades rolled his eyes. Thanatos locked eyes with me. I immediately stopped laughing, feeling a slight blush dusting my cheeks as I stared back into those ebony orbs. We both quickly looked away from each other and turned our attention to Hades when he cleared his throat.

"Anubis and I should be leaving. We'll leave the research here with the two of you. I want to take down The Memitim to be your priority."

"Understood," we said in unison.

With that, Anubis and Hades left through a portal, leaving Thanatos and me alone together in awkward silence.

"So…"

"You're free to get back to work if you want. I'll read over these files,' Thanatos said stiffly.

"I'd like to learn more about reaping, considering the fact that I'm now a Psychopomp. That is if you aren't too busy to teach me," my voice was timid. I was afraid he would say no. I know I hurt him when I ran earlier. I didn't mean to run. I was just nervous and caught off guard. I should've explained myself to him, but I didn't.

He stared at me for a moment, long enough for me to start to fidget under his gaze. "Alright," he finally said, nodding his head. "I won't go easy on you, though. We're going to take every call that we can, and you are going to be doing the reaping. Not me."

"Were you going easy on me before because you liked me?" I needed to know if he was gonna be hard on me now because of hurt feelings. I needed him to have a clear head about this.

"No. I went easy on you because you didn't have a scythe and because we had time. If The Memitim really did kill Charon, I need you prepared to reap any soul you need to. Either because they're dying or for your own self-defense."

I nodded my head in understanding. "When do we start?"

"Now," he said, activating his scythe and opening a portal.

"You have to teach me how to do that portal thing." I readied my scythe and followed Thanatos through the portal.
