Chapter 23

I paced Thanatos' office, worrying Hel and Kerberos. The woman sat on the couch watching me, and the dog lay on the floor in front of the desk, his three heads following me. I was rambling by that point, I think. Blaming myself if anything were to happen to Thanatos. Calling myself stupid for not just accepting Azrael's offer. How could I have been so selfish?

"Kifo, I would've done the same thing if I were in your position. So would anyone. No one is holding this against you," Hel's voice was smooth and gentle.

I stopped pacing long enough to look over at the other woman. "You're wrong. I'm holding it against me. Thanatos would have made the trade. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together would have made the trade."

"If they weren't thinking logically. You kept your wits about you. When we get Thanatos back, he'll praise you for it."

"I wasn't thinking logically. I offered him my life in exchange for Thanatos. That's not logical thinking. And then I stormed out. What I should've done was held my scythe to his throat and demanded he let Thanatos go."

"You would've been stooping to their level, and no one would've wanted that, Kifo."

I knew Hel was trying to make me feel better. I knew that deep down inside, she was actually as scared as I was. Charon was dead, Thanatos was being held prisoner, and I'd turned down the only offer that would've gotten him back to us safely. Though there was no guarantee, he would be returned to us safely or at all, it was still our only hope.

"You're great at researching, Kifo. I'm sure that you could figure out where Thanatos is."

I shook my head. "I don't know enough about the Memitim to be able to tell where they're keeping him."

"But you can research enough about the city to figure out where they might be keeping him. Odds are they aren't holding him out of town or too far from their headquarters."

I looked at Hel in shock. How could I have been so stupid as to not think about that? "You're right. I'll get started on that right away."

"I'll leave you to it then." Hel left the office as I sat down behind Thanatos' desk and began researching abandoned buildings in the city.
