Chapter 10

Next morning everybody woke up and got dressed and ready for another day. Gloria and Luther Standing Bear went and dropped the kids off at the school house and left into to town. Everybody went to school except Victoria, she skipped school today to see her uncle, who was still in the hospital, a sleep. She slowly looked and checked to see where her mother and grandfather went then she snuck in. She walked over to Black Elks bed side and stood there and held his hand. She felt his fingers starting to twitch and then he moved.

"Uncle," Victoria said with excitement.

He slowly started to open his eyes.

"What are you doing here, are you supposed to be in school young lady?" asked Black Elk.

"Well, sort of, I just came by to see you, we worried about you last night," said Gloria.

"Well I'm fine now, hurting a little bit, but ill be alright," said Black Elk.

Victoria looked up and saw Luther and Gloria through the window.

"Mom, I have to hide, huh, nurse hide me please," said Victoria.

"You can hide in the closet," laughed the nurse.

"Good Idea," Victoria running to the closet and shutting the door.

Black Elk just smiled, Gloria and Luther started walking in.

"Gloria, he's awake now, and he looks really good, his skin color is back to normal," said the nurse.

"Good, thank you for telling me, dad he's awake now, you can come see him, I have some paper work I need to do first," said Gloria.

So Luther Standing Bear walks in.

"Dad," smiled Black Elk.

"Son, how are you feeling," Luther Standing Bear stroking his son's head.

"I'm alright, hurting a little bit, its sore right in here," said Black Elk.

"I'm sure it is son, you just take it easy, your sister did a good job," said Luther Standing Bear.

"I knew she was afraid, I felt it," said Black Elk.

"Yes she was, we all thought you weren't going to make it through the night," said Luther Standing Bear.

Black Elk just smiled. Victoria was looking through the cracks in the door and could see Luther Standing Bear.

"Come on out Victoria," smiled Luther Standing Bear.

Victoria comes out of the closet.

"How'd you know it was me grandfather?" asked Victoria.

"I smelled your perfume, the minute I walked in here," laughed Luther Standing Bear.

"Shhh, grandfather, mom will hear you," said Victoria.

"You're supposed to be in school young lady, why aren't you?" asked Luther Standing Bear.

"I had to see my uncle, to see if he was going to be okay, or even alive," said Victoria.

"Well he's alive and his alright, now go to school before you get in trouble," said Luther Standing Bear.

"You can go out the back door," said the nurse.

"Thank you, alright, I'll see you again after school uncle," Victoria running out of the building.

"Silly girl, just like you were son," smiled Luther Standing Bear.

They started laughing, then Gloria walks in and smiles.

"What's so funny?" asked Gloria.

"Oh nothing just laughing," said Luther Standing Bear.

"Its good to see your awake brother," smiled Gloria.

"Thank you," said Black Elk.

Meanwhile the Sheriff walks in.

"Morning Sheriff, "said Luther Standing Bear.

"Morning, hey Black Elk, it's good to see your up," said the Sheriff.

"Thank you," said Black Elk.

"How are you feeling?" asked the Sheriff.

"A little sore, but I'll be alright," smiled Black Elk.

"That's good to hear, you stay out of trouble you hear," said the Sheriff.

"I will, "said Black Elk.

"Good, I'll be seeing you later," said the Sheriff.

"Bye," said Black Elk.

The Sheriff walked out and went back to his office.

"I'm sure the girls will come by after school to see you," said Gloria.

"Great," smiled Black Elk.

Even though Victoria already came by to see him. Gloria smiled and walked back to the front desk. Luther stepped out and went across the street to the general store to buy supplies for Gloria. Black Elk closed his eyes and went to sleep. Gloria came in and out, checking on her brother and changing his bandages. Then around three or so Luther and the kiddo's came by.

"He's a sleep right now, let him rest, you can see him tomorrow," said Gloria.

"But mom," said Maria.

"Its alright you guys can come see him tomorrow, you guys are out of school that day, "said Gloria.

"Alright momma," said Madison.

So Luther Standing Bear took the girls home.

"Grandpa, are you going to stay here with us, or go back to your village?" asked Maria.

"When your uncle is well to travel, we'll stop by to visit, and then we will be on our way," said Luther Standing Bear.

"Why do you have to go back?" asked Victoria.

"Its our home, our people, your uncle is becoming a warrior, and I want him to stay that way, he's going to be a great warrior, he's going to bring our people back. He's going to be then next generation, he's going to be ruthless, he's going to give are people their lands back and drive off the white eyes, even if we go into the white man's fire this is our home," said Luther Standing Bear.

"Uncle, he's not a killer, he's to nice," said Madison.

"I know he is, that is why we can't stay, I don't want him turning into a white man, because then, he'll start killing his own people for money, and I don't want that, I want him to become the best warrior there is, and maybe be chief one day to our people and lead our people, and take back what is ours," said Luther Standing Bear.

"It's okay girls, it's a Native thing," said Victoria.

Then walks in Gloria.

"Hi momma, Victoria is cooking for us," said Maria.

"Good, thank you sweetie, "smiled Gloria.

"Your welcome, I thought I would cook something, so when you get home you'd have food waiting," smiled Victoria.

"That's very kind of you sweetheart," Gloria.

So they all sat down at the table and started to eat. Then it got dark and Gloria was cleaning up the kitchen and Luther was doing the dishes, and Victoria was putting the girls to bed. Then Gloria went to bed as did Luther.
