Author's note at the end:

Enjoy

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once upon a time there was a little girl. This girl loved to play and had a smile that never strayed from her face. She was an only child at the time but she didn't mind the silence. You could ask anyone who knew the little girl and they'll reply with "she's always a happy child.

Let's go back in time shall we, when the girl was about 5 years old. One day she came back from school feeling happier as ever because she had just been chosen for a singing and storytelling competition. When she came back home from school she rushed to tell 'them' but she had to wait as one was at work while the other wasn't in the mood.

Later at dinner 'they' sat down with her when she told 'them' about the news. One was proud of her while the other just started making plans about what story and song should she do. That night before going to bed she asked the good one "Is 'he' mad at me?". The other person quickly replied "No my child 'he' just wants what's best for you". With that the little girl fell asleep with a smile on her face oblivious to what the day has in store for her.

The competition was two months away, yet 'he ' suggested that the little girl get started right away. She didn't complain nor whine as she knew 'he' always knew what was best for her. The next two months were torture as 'he' wanted her to be the best. She would often get scolded or sometimes even a slap for not giving it her best. But even then her smile never even faltered.

Soon the two months were up, it was the day of the competition. The little girl truly believed she was ready as she had given her best while practicing. Fast forward to when it was her time to shine, she went on stage with a big smile. The little girl knew she couldn't sing but that didn't stop her from having fun. Finally she told her story and when she ended with a "The End" everyone clapped. She thought she would burst from being oh so very happy.

It was now the time for the judges to make the announcement. The little girl felt nervous but was excited to know who had won the competition. After waiting for what seemed like hours the little girl's name was called. Now she definitely couldn't contain her happiness. Even though the little girl came in second place she was proud of herself. She ran up the stage to collect her prize and then took some pictures with her teachers. But as she turned around, for the first time her smile faltered as she looked at 'him'.

'His' eyes were ablaze but he had a fake smile on his face. 'He' quickly walked towards the little girl and her teachers, thanking them and saying they had to be somewhere else. With a heavy heart the little girl followed 'them' to the car and not a second later 'he' burst. 'he' said "Look at you! I trained you so hard for two months and you just got second place?" 'he' screamed at her. And for the first time in her life the little girl felt her heart breaking. The little girl just muttered a small "sorry" and was silent the whole ride home. That night the little girl fell asleep with the thought "Am i not good enough"
