Ep. 12 Solar Eclipse

December 12th, 2023

Snowflakes fell once again from the sky, giving the early morning a young feeling of distant childhoods. The snow was piling at about six inches, so the children of Equality was enjoying Mother Nature's gift with care. The air smelled of fresh water, and the wind made it a tad chillier than it originally was.

Winter was one of the Daycarers' most favorite season to prepare, but it was also hard work. They had to measure how much snow had fell, and weigh how many more inches the snow would produce. But it also needed to be not too little, because the snow was an essential part of the farms.

In Equality, Winter was a special time of the year. The children enjoyed hot chocolate, sledding, the snow, snowball fights, making snowmen, and Halcyon Moonwake. The adults and teenagers were more interested in Sarang, sales, staying warm, hanging mistletoe to ward off evil spirits, and shoveling.

Since Nature tried to commit suicide, it had been three days. Freedom had somehow managed to calm her down when she was ready to burst at her family more. She was doing much better with taking care of herself again. Foxy couldn't seem to pinpoint what about Freedom was different than them when it came to her mental needs. He was smart. Did ego get in the way?

Whatever the answer was, the Hunters were glad to see her around again. Even better, she had decided to go back to school again. The only down side was she needed to wear a hat and scarf now and Nature catches colds easily.

"Maybe my new "Guardian" abilities will make me not get sick!" Nature joked with Foxy as they walked to school.

"I don't think it works like that, Nature, but I'm glad you're coming with me today," Foxy smiled.

"Have you seen Phoebe and Hannah? They wear a dress year-round, Foxy!"

"That doesn't mean you have to."

"I don't know that yet."

"Do you even like dresses?"

"Eh, depends on the day," Nature shrugged, adjusting her white and light pink bonnet.

After a few more minutes of chit chat, the school came into view. Snow covered all the grass, the play equipment, and rooftop. Still, students stood outside either waiting for their friends or playing in the snow. Well, it was more of a snowball fight.

"Well, here goes nothing," Nature sighed.

"Hey, remember if anyone has anything harsh to say to you today, they're just jealous."

"I wish it were that simple, but it really isn't-," she began before a snowball hit her in the back of the head. "HEY! WHO-!"

"Oh! Sorry, Nature!" Dasher apologized and fled the battle ground to them. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, I'm alright," she rubbed her head. "Sorry about the other day. I wasn't in the best mood."

"It's fine. Could have been worse. Don't worry about it."

"It still wasn't right...."

"You weren't in the right mind. We're best friends still," Dasher patted Nature's right shoulder.

"Prank Season still around?"

"You know it," Dasher smiled.

"I look forward to spiders in Princess Guardians' bed."

Dasher giggled mischievously and nodded, "I'll get the spiders!"

They continued to have a conversation about pranks, and Foxy felt uneven hearing what they were up to. Soon enough, Nicole, Butterfly, and Jewel also got to school and joined their conversation. It did not take long for the three to feel the same as Foxy. As the group talked, Nature was scanning the students for Freedom.

A half an hour later, he did show up from a path into the forest. He seemed a bit on edge though. His body language ceased once he saw them in their little huddled group, trying to avoid snowballs from the Kindergarteners.

"Hey, guys!" He exclaimed, sprinting.

"Well, shoot! Look who crawled out of their hole!" Nicole replied.

"Ha, ha, you're very funny," he said sarcastically.

"No, wait, since when do you yell greetings? You're shy, quiet, Freedom," Dasher commented.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Stop teasing them, Freedom!" Nature giggled.

"But I can't, Guardian Nature, it must be done. Your words," he held up his left hand as if he was promising it.

"I told you not to call me that," she scowled.

"Fine, but it's on you if I get in trouble."

"You're not going to get in trouble. My game: my rules!"

"Okay, point taken."

"That's sixty points to ten," Foxy added.

"You've been keeping track? It's only been four days!" Freedom raised his eyebrows.

"Of course, I have been!"

"Of course, he has been!" Jewel repeated in a high pitch. Dasher, Butterfly, and Nicole laughed with her.

"What's so funny?" Nature questioned.

"You can't possibly make it any more obvious, dear!"

"What are you talking about?" She blushed and her eyes turned pink.

"Ya know exactly what we're thinkin'," Nicole grinned.

"N-No, I don't."

"Okay," Freedom breathed and exhaled. "I'm going to borrow Nature for a moment, alright? Okay? Okay." He pulled her aside to a tree out of earshot from anyone. "It may be time to let it out."

"I don't know, Freedom. They can be so... extra... when it comes to these things."

"Well, if you don't tell them now, they're probably going to nag you about it all day."

"But they're not good at keeping secrets. Once it's out, it will be out."

"How bad can it be? So, everyone will know. At least they'll leave you alone."

"I don't think it's going to work like that. Must I remind you Equality is crazy about the Guardians? They can run away. I can't."

"It's either now or at Sarang. Then, we won't have much of a choice."

"But what about your family, Freedom? Karlos acts like he wants to bury me alive," Nature made an excuse.

"He's going to have to get through me first. You're a Guadian anyway. He'll have to try a lot more than burying. Don't make me call you intimidating again," he teased her.

"I'm not intimidating!"

"You're right! You're a small whittle jelly bean."

"Shush!" She playfully punched him on the shoulder.

"Or should I call you a marshmallow like the Guardians did?"

"Stop! What's your point?"

"My point is you have the highest authority in the land. Anything you say goes whether anyone likes it or not. Even Queen Sun must listen. There are no exceptions except if the other Guardians disagree with you. Don't worry about what my family thinks. Your opinions matter than anything now. If you want this, they can complain, but they can't do anything without getting into serious trouble."

"I can't stop them twenty-four seven though. They can harass you at any time."

"It's not anything I'm not use to. Besides, we made a deal. I would be myself more if you gave-."

"Myself a chance. Yes, I know," she sighed. "It's so difficult now. I'm not sure who 'Nature' is anymore." She looked at her hands.

"Remember what I said about starting over?" Freedom held her hands. "Maybe this whole "Guardian" thing is exactly what you need. Begin again. Pretend like... it's your first time here or something. You're amazing just the way you are. You just need to show it."

"It sounds like we're in the same boat now."

"Then, we'll improve together. It can begin like this. I've seen a very different Nature than what they know. You're not a freak, you're not a monster, but you are a Guardian. You told me you think the Guardians are monsters, right?"

"Yeah..."

"Then, whatever you see in them you don't like, be the opposite. It's not about what they want you to do. It's about who you want to be."

Nature took a deep breath. "This could go terribly wrong."

"Or terribly right."

"...Okay, let's give this a shot," she looked up at him and smiled.

"Are you nervous?"

"Obviously."

"It's okay to be afraid. How do you want to do this?"

"Let's just wing it and hope for the best."

Holding hands, they returned to the patient group, who was watching with clear curiosity on what information they would get. Foxy was doing his best not to spoil anything. The seven of them stood there silently.

"...We-," Nature began before ice formed around her feet. "Okay, that's new."

Foxy snickered, "Now you have cold feet?"

"Sh-Shut up! I can't move my feet. Great."

"Hold on, ya'll," Nicole said. She kicked the ice hard a few times and it broken into several pieces.

"Explain that one, Foxy!" Dasher laughed.

"Thank you, Nicole," Nature sighed.

"You're welcome."

"Anyway, we, um..."

"Yeah?" Dasher said impatiently.

"We're... dating..."

"I CALLED IT! HAZZA!" She exclaimed. "Pay up, Nicole!"

"Ugh, here," Nicole groaned, pulling a fifty-dollar bill out.

"Oh. My. Stars," Butterfly clapped her hands together. "We didn't even need to do anything."

"I already knew it! Hand gestures, blushing, and nervousness gave it away," Jewel confessed. "We're proud of you, dear."

"Yeah, but I'll have your heads if you tell anyone," Nature threatened.

"Gee, chill!" Dasher said, slightly offended. "We weren't going to."

"I mean it!"

"Alright, alright. We swear," Nicole accepted.

"Only until Sarang though," Dasher grinned.

"I don't think you'll be able to keep it in for even a week, Dasher," Butterfly shook her head. "How are you two going to keep it a secret if you're going to walk around like that?"

"Good question," Foxy nodded.

"We're...not?" Nature looked up at Freedom. "I'm not sure we are going to."

"I guess we'll take it one step at a time, and other people can figure it out for themselves," Freedom suggested.

"Okay, I guess."

Soon after Nature agreed, the bell rang and they all had to go into the school and to their lockers. The bell rang again, signifying students needed to go to their classes. Nature and Freedom walked to English Language Arts together, giggling like two school girls about a fork. Why?

Well, a first grader gave a decorated plastic fork to Nature and told her she was an angel. Nature took a moment to admire it, and then, she realized a fork was making them late. None the less, she kept it.

They took their seats next to each other, prepared their desk for the lesson, and waited as more students filed in. The teacher wrote the lesson plan on the white board and turned around to view the class.

She had brown, straight hair and brown eyes. She made ELA exciting and entertaining, especially when Equalian history was involved. If you were not enjoying the class, there was something wrong with you. The students referred to her as Mrs. B.

"Oh, Nature! How nice of you to join us," Mrs. B said, adjusting her glasses.

"Hello," Nature uneasily waved to her. "I hope I didn't miss too much..."

"I'm sure you'll catch up," she turned around to continue writing. "You always have known more than most students."

Nature turned to Freedom. "I'm not sure if that was a compliment."

"Remember, one step at a time," he reassured her.

Right away, the teacher handed out books about the origins of Equality. To this, Nature's attention was grabbed. It crossed her mind that maybe hearing the story again would encourage her on what she was supposed to do. Therefore, she leaned in to soak up all the tiny details.

June 8th, 1039

Salt water drenched Princess Sun's hair and torn dress as her mother, niece, and sister got off their small wooden canoe. They were in poor condition. Their dresses were torn and their hair was unclean and let loose. Princess Sun sighed, perched over the edge of the canoe, and wringed out her light purple hair.

It was the eleventh century, and the continent across the ocean could no longer be of service to them. Their kingdom had been destroyed, but they were fortunate enough to escape. They had spent three months on open water, afraid they would die of hunger. But here they were, standing tiredly on a beach.

"We should make a fire," Princess Sun suggested. "Crystal is probably cold."

"I'm okay, auntie," Princess Crystal smiled brightly. Her smile was missing a tooth. She had lost her first tooth on the ocean.

"I'll look for a forest and try to find some wood. Can you look for a good place to stop for the night?" She asked her mother.

"Yes, you have what looks like four hours before sunset. Be careful."

"I will."

Princess Sun stretched her wings and soared into the sky, feeling the fluff of the clouds. She reached a top of a mountain and looked across the land before her. There were no castles, houses, farms, or towns like what she was used to. There was, however, millions of trees and open fields. It would make a great land.

On the mountain, there was a few huts here and there. They were placed in a circle and a firepit laid in the middle. A small field of corn and sunflowers was close to the huts on the right. Princess Sun saw maybe a dozen people arguing by one hut. She flew down, landing on soft green grass.

"Hello?" She said hesitatingly. They stopped and turned towards her.

"You know English?" A male with wings said.

"You have wings?"

"Who are you?"

"I'm Princess Sun. I was going to be Queen Sun, but something happened. Who are you?"

"My name is Bravehood. I'm the main leader here. My co-leaders over there are Anna, Thorn, and Alpha."

Bravehood was tall, handsome, had blue hair, blue wings, yellow eyes, and his leadership skills was why he was in charge. Anna was smart, paid close attention to details, beautiful, had black straight hair, and green eyes. Thorn was strict, strong, not the guy to mess with, blue eyes, blond hair, and short. Finally, Alpha had hazel eyes, red hair, was kind, could talk to animals, and gentle.

The people of the group wore feathers, deer skin for clothes, nothing for shoes, the women's hair was long and braided, and the men's hair was cut short. They resembled Indians.

"From where have you come?" Alpha asked.

"Across the ocean."

"Are you here to take over us?" Thorn crossed his arms.

"No, we came by accident."

"We?" Anna titled her head.

"Just my mother, myself, sister, and niece."

"Interesting."

"So, you've come completely alone? Do you know how foolish that is?" Bravehood asked.

"I always greet people with kindness before judging. Are you the only group on these lands?"

"No, not exactly. There are two women who come and go from the forests. We're not sure where they come from."

"Are the forests safe?"

"Yes."

"Do you mind if I collect wood for a fire for the night?"

"Hm, go ahead for tonight. I have decided to trust you, but don't make me regret it. Come back tomorrow."

"Thank you," Princess Sun bowed and flew to a forest.

Stepping into the forest, she got an imminent feeling like she was being watched. The forest was flourishing with life. Moss covered grey rocks, the grass was dark green from the shade of the oak and birch trees, a stream flowed smoothly, birds chirped, a few fallen trees laid in one spot, berry bushes were occupied by rabbits, and squirrels chased one another in the beams of sunlight that shown in.

Walking deeper in the forest, Princess Sun heard a distant voice singing. There were no words. It was only notes moving up and down on a staff. She went towards the voice and realized there was a second voice, also doing the same.

The forest came to a small, circular open area. The trees were tall enough to still shade the area quite well though. Pink and blue flowers waved in the slight breeze. It took her a moment, but she made out two figures in the center.

They were both female. The shorter girl sang soprano while the other, taller girl sang alto. They seemed happy.

The shorter girl danced around, making a flower crown in her hands. Her eyes were icy light blue, inviting, and happy. Her hair was light blond, wavy, and had short, curly bangs. Her dress was black, white, and brown. It was in Medieval ball gown form. The short sleeves on the dress were made of sheer fabric. Her skin was like porcelain.

The taller girl giggled for a moment, admiring her friend. Her eyes were hazel, the greener kind. They seemed in thought, kind, and mysterious. Her blond, straight hair contained natural brown highlights, and the ends of strands for her bangs slightly curled together to opposite sides. Her strapless dress was white, black, and purple.

Princess Sun stood hidden with the trees, observing them. She wondered if those were the women Bravehood had spoken of. She decided to leave them be, gather wood, and return to the beach.

What she had not realized was the women had noticed she had been there. They had simply caused a distraction. So, they followed her out of curiosity.

"I'm back!" Princess Sun exclaimed to her family. "And I have news."

"We're listening," Queen Ice nodded.

"There are natives here who know the land. They're really friendly too. I'm going to meet with them again tomorrow, sound good?"

"Must I remind you we just survived a betrayal to something like this? How do you know they won't attack us?"

"Oh, they won't," the shorter girl popped out from behind Queen Ice.

"Ah! Who are you?" She yelled.

"I'm Hannah and that's Phoebe, my B.F.F.L.S.!" She pointed to behind Princess Sun. Princess Sun turned around and jumped because the taller girl had been standing inches from behind her. Hannah skipped toward the princess and felt her face all over. "Look at you! Perfect face features, body, white wings, and I am LOVING this hair color! I see what you were talking about, Phoebe. She's just what we need!"

"What?" Princess Sun moved away from her, feeling uncomfortable.

Hannah bounced to each of the other members. Picking up Princess Crystal, she said, "You are so beautiful! A real crystal!" She put her down. "Hi, Moon! How are you doing? And you must be Queen Ice, we've heard a lot about you. Your husband is dead! You guys must be starving!"

"Hannah, siht ekil sevlesruo gniwohs eb t'ndluohs ew...," Phoebe said uneasily.

"You know I can't understand you when you talk Fellan!" Hannah replied before jumping off a rock and into the ocean. She came back up with fish in her hands. "I hope you guys like seafood."

The Royal Family looked at each other in confusion. The two women were the definition of mysterious to them. Hannah cooked the fish over a fire for them and only them. The Moon was high in the sky, yet the women had not left yet. Hannah kept on bouncing around. Phoebe stood far to the right, keeping to herself and watching.

"Are you going to eat too?" Princess Sun summed up the courage to ask Hannah.

"Nope!" She replied, still full of energy.

"Why not?"

"We don't need to. You see, we're not Human."

"You're...not?"

"Nope!" Hannah said again, creating a pink lily with her hands. She put it in the princess' hair. "Cute."

"How did you do that?" Princess Sun gawked, touching the flower to make sure it was real. "How are you not Human?"

"It's not a question of 'how'. It's a question of 'what'."

"Then, what are you? Are you an angel?"

"You could say that," she looked up towards the stars. "But we are not perfect, we're far from it. We can be your best ally, or your worst nightmare. The choice is yours."

She smiled and walked away, towards Princess Moon. Princess Sun rotated in the direction of Phoebe, who also made eye contact with her. A chill was sent down her spine. There was something strange about the two she could not pin point. They seemed Human, but apparently, they were not.

The next morning, the women had disappeared. Princess Sun sat up and shook her head. Maybe it was a dream. But there she felt it, the lily was still in her hair, and the fire had been recently put out. A few skeletons of fish laid on the sand. So, they were real.

A few hours later, she flew back over the mountain to the natives. They were already up and starting chores. Alpha saw her in the sky and alerted the others. Bravehood welcomed her back and insisted on her joining him and his co-leaders in a hut around a fire.

The hut was toasty, and they sat in a circle around the fire.

"How was first night?" Anna asked.

"Hm, peculiar. We meant the women you spoke of. The one made a flower from her hands," Princess Sun explained.

"Ah, so you've meant the Guardians," Thorn nodded.

"The...Guardians?"

"Yes, they roam this land, and they were here before us."

"Do they own the land?"

"We like to think they do," Alpha answered. "They don't hunt, plant, work, eat, or drink. They are just here like spirits."

"What do you know about them?"

"Very little," Bravehood began. "We know the taller blond, Phoebe, is older and too silent to not be weary of. She moves with the trees, in her own little world. She also seems to like leaves and our art. The shorter blond, Hannah, is more talkative and energetic. She likes to play games, children, and the color pink. They both seem to seem to have a kind of... power you could say."

"Like magic?"

"Perhaps."

"Have they ever been a threat?"

"No, but this one time, another tribe attempted an attack. We were outnumbered largely, but the Guardians protected us. Hannah favors a large blade made of a material stronger than stone. Phoebe is skilled using a bow and arrows."

"Interesting... Anyway, why did you wish for me to return?"

"We were wondering if-."

December 12th, 2023

Mrs. B laid a book mark in the spot she stopped at. "I'm afraid that's all we have time for for today. Your homework is to read to chapter three tonight. You are dismissed."

Students began to pack their things, but Nature sat still, looking at the book. Freedom stopped for a moment to see if she was okay.

"Nature?" He tapped her.

She shook her head and turned towards him. "Yeah?"

"Did you space out or something?"

"No, I heard everything."

"Oh, okay."

"But... I... felt like I was there," she closed the book.

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know. I just, is it possible I was imagining the experience? It felt real, too real."

Freedom did not reply, for he had no answer. As Nature leaned down to pick up her binder, she noticed her right foot was touching Freedom's left foot. Thinking it was normal, she chuckled and raised her binder.

A few hours later, Freedom went to lunch. He got yogurt and joined Foxy, Dasher, Nicole, Jewel, and Butterfly instead of his guard "friends". They were grateful to have him and welcomed him with open arms.

"Where's Nature?" Nicole asked him.

"She's going to be a bit late. Principle Moon is bothering her and such," Freedom explained.

"Great! So, I have an idea. Nature missed her birthday. We should SO do something about it!" Dasher exclaimed. "I was thinking a surprise birthday party! Eh?"

"I think the last thing Nature wants is another surprise," Foxy shook his head.

"You mean like how you and Princess Guardians cannot possibly get enough out of each other?" Jewel raised an eyebrow.

"No, that's different," he blushed.

"Nature is going to grill you if she finds out."

"I don't like her like that!"

"That's what they all say."

"Woah, woah, woah! When did this happen?" Freedom jumped in.

"A while now," Nicole answered. "Ya can't seem to resist her, Foxy."

"It's potions! How can I say no to that?"

"Oh, dear, we're not shaming it or anything, but be careful what kind of fire you play with. She doesn't exactly have the best reputation for being nice," Jewel shook her head.

"She helped you guys."

"So what? I can't name all the other things she did here! Like one time, she dragged me out to the soccer field and made me eat grass in front of the whole school!" Dasher folded her arms. "She gave a "makeover" to Butterfly, destroyed Jewel's mom's business, burnt down the farm house one year, and don't even get me started on the war between her and Nature!"

"I know you said not to, but now I'm curious. What about my sister and her?"

"Before Princess Guardians left, her and Nature were constantly competing. It was everything from the most correctly spelled words to extreme equations. Nature beat her at everything except magic. Prank Season was when it was the worst," Butterfly said. "No one really knows why they were such rivals in the first place."

"Could have been jealously. I mean, Nature did have Queen Sun's attention more than her," Nicole suggested. "Princess Guardians is an attention seeker."

"I think you guys don't understand her," Foxy disagreed.

"As much as I hate to admit it, being a guard and all, Princess Guardians is pretty terrible compared to the rest of the Royal Family," Freedom confessed. "But she has... grown up a little."

"Yeah, but how long will it last?" Dasher rolled her eyes.

"I don't think she can beat a Guardian," Jewel replied. "Didn't they make an alliance anyway?"

"Yes," Freedom nodded. "So, I agree with Foxy and Dasher. Nature wouldn't like the surprise, but I do think we should do something. What I mean is no jump-out-and-yell deal. I mean something lighter, something with no stress put into it."

"How about just presents?" Nicole shrugged.

"Way to kill the mood, Nicole!" Dasher scoffed.

"What? There's no stress in that!"

"Yeah, but this is Nature! Think bigger!"

"What are we thinking about?" Nature asked surprisingly, making them all jump.

"Oh, Nature, where did you come from?" Jewel uneasily said.

"The...door? Where else would I have come from?" She replied. "What did I miss?"

"Nothing! We were just talking about... Sarang! Yeah, Sarang!" Dasher struggled.

"Okay, I guess. I'll be back," she accepted and walked away to get lunch.

Afraid Nature would appear out of nowhere again, they stayed silent. The cafeteria was as loud as any other day. It seemed the older students got, the louder they became. It was all the more they liked to stir trouble too. Or, at least, it was the case most of the time.

As Nature walked past the tables, thinking about what she should choose for lunch, the students stopped their running jaws like dominoes to watch her. She did not notice though. The students, of all grades, were curious about their new Guardian roaming upon them. There were many questions and little time to answer them.

Everyone knew the Guardians were immortal. Everyone knew the Guardians were mysterious. Everyone knew the Guardians were of high authority. Everyone knew the Guardians were powerful. And everyone knew the Guardians were extraordinary, being unlike any other being on the planet.

But why Nature?

It was obvious she was capable of supreme magic, as their example two months ago stated. But Nature was not one to fight, they all knew that. Why had she been so upset a week ago too?

Then, it clicked. A light bulb went off some sooner than others. Nature was not a Hunter though she could speak to animals. In fact, she could do all the common Human traits- except for flight. Or could she? They couldn't be sure. There was evidence of her not being fully Human either though. You wouldn't see a Human walking around, pulling objects out of their hair. Her ability to balance things, whether it be objects or situations, was outstanding. She was also beyond her years wise and intelligent.

When she wanted something, she got it.

So, they concluded, though some gritted their teeth, she really was a Guardian after all. Forget Lady Nature! She was more! She was Guardian Nature. There were mixed feelings about it in the air though. Did they need another Guardian? More importantly, why did the Guardians need another Guardian? Was it destined or an accident considering Nature was not thrilled to be one? They did not have the answers, but one thing was a fact. Nature was no longer of "normal" Human status.

Nature got a bland tray like anyone else would, decided on strawberry yogurt, thanked the lunch lady, got carrots, a spoon, water, and paid the other lunch lady with her card. When she turned to go back to her group, her eyes meant with everyone else's. She gave a confused glance but continued on.

"What is everyone's deal?" Nature whispered, setting her tray down and sitting next to Freedom.

"Guardian," Freedom whispered back.

"Oh, right," she facepalmed.

The students slowly began talking again until they were back to normal. Nicole had started a conversation and one from Jewel followed. Nature sat there, silently eating her lunch while listening to the group laughing. She got bored and took her book from ELA out.

"So, I've got a question. Why is Equality called Equality? It's not equal at all!" Foxy pointed out.

"The Guardians," Nature answered with a twinge of disgust. "Who else?"

"Nature, what exactly is your problem with them?" Dasher asked. "I mean, you act like they're a disease."

"It's... personal."

"How bad can it be?"

"Bad."

"Are you sure you're not just paranoid?" Jewel noted.

"No, I know what I'm talking about. Doubt me all you want. It won't change my mind."

"At least give us one reason, dear."

Instead of answering, Nature pointed past them and at the window. They turned, spotting Guardian Hannah waving like an idiot at them. She smiled and giggled, noticing she had her younger peer's attention. Nature gave a stern look and crushed her empty water bottle with her hands. It only made the Guardian from outside laugh gleefully and run along.

"Well, they certainly want your attention," Freedom rubbed the back of his neck.

"Oh, they'll get it alright," Nature growled.

The group had taken a moment to notice Nature's eye color had turned from a sunny yellow to a bright red from Guardian Hannah. Foxy had a thought then. Maybe the changing of color was based on emotion.

"Whatcha reading, sis?" Foxy proceeded.

"Just something from class."

He looked at the title, reading two words in French. It had a midnight blue cover and a purple diamond as the cover picture. The title, Les Origines de l' egalite, and spine were inked golden. There was a red string attached for a book mark. The titled translated to Equality's Origins.

"Haven't you read that one before?"

"Yes," Nature nodded.

August 21st, 1039

The agreement between the natives and the royal family was going swell, and each side kept their promises. Princess Sun promised to help form a civilization with them if, in return, they accepted her and her family to keep their royal status. They agreed because they liked her personality and thought she would make a fine ruler.

Oddly enough, the Guardians had not shown their faces since their last encounter. The people were left to wonder what they were up to.

Over the month, the two worlds had disagreements, but they came to compromises. They decided on a monarchy. Princess Sun would get to have her reign, but she thought, since the natives were there first, she would listen to their view points before making impacting decisions. Therefore, when rules and laws were in place, they began building small houses and a castle.

The natives were split into four different groups. Bravehood was a representative for the Daycarers, a group of natives with wings who controlled the weather. Alpha represented the Communicators, a group of natives that talked to animals and took care of nature. Anna was a representative for the Analysts, a group of natives who were good with numbers and information. Finally, Thorn represented the Strengths, a group of natives who were capable of farming and construction projects.

The next month, civil war broke out between the four groups. Each group thought the other groups were being unfair. So, they stopped doing their jobs. Food made by the Strengths was running out though and weather grew wild. Still being stubborn, the groups refused to fix the issue. Their hatred increased rapidly.

One Analysist, Harness, created a series of books called "The Five Books of Demons." The books possessed actual demons that crafted Dark Magic. He was burned at the stake for creating such a series that could control one's mind. He ended up becoming a demon within the books.

Then, his son, Clover, stole the books, hoping to free his father. As karma causes, the demons proceeded to kill him instead. He became a demon within too.

The Dark Magic was still on the run though. It caused fights, depression, cancer, a drought, and starvation. At last, the Guardians came around and collected the Dark Magic into a black, glowing, cut to a point crystal. Princess Sun thanked them and handed the books over to them.

They attempted to destroy the books, but they would not break. The demons were holding on hard. So, they blessed the books and buried them deep into the planet.

Guardian Hannah simply answered for her partner, "They were Satan's problem now."

The four groups decided enough was enough or they would not live through the winter. So, they too thanked the Guardians, and the arguments ended. Princess Sun thought everything was back on schedule, but the Guardians had something else in mind.

What Princess Sun had no clue about yet was the Guardians were there for a bigger purpose. Sure, saving the lives of innocent people was great, but they wanted something else from dear young Princess Sun. They waited until after she was finally crowned as Queen Sun.

It was August 21st, 1039, and Queen Sun was walking around the small structure of castle she had the natives build. It was made of stone, had two towers, and looked more like a fortress, yet it was a home. A home in a land that was officially her responsibility. She strode into the castle, not liking its blandness. She kept in mind it would change though.

A few moments later, she opened her wooden bedroom door and froze. There was Guardian Phoebe, laying on Queen Sun's hay bed on her stomach. She was confused because the mysterious Guardian had not bothered to say one word to her since they meant. Queen Sun wasn't even sure she spoke English.

"Can I... help you... with something?" She asked, becoming a bit shy as the Guardian continued to blankly stare at her.

But she smiled for a moment apologetically, and sat up. Then, she patted the empty space next to her. Queen Sun hesitated but she sat down next to her. Before saying anything, the Guardian sprang up and moved to in front of Queen Sun and gazed down at her.

"I believe... we haven't properly meant," the Guardian whispered.

"Uh, right. We haven't," Queen Sun agreed nervously.

"You'll have to forgive my friend. She is quite energetic."

"I noticed."

"My name is Phoebe."

"Sun."

"Bright you are."

Queen Sun blushed at the complement. "If you don't mind me asking, why is this the first time we're talking?"

"I prefer to observe first. Jumping in is too quick to judge for me. I see you are interested in building a kingdom. It is no simple task for a six-teen year old."

"I know. What's your point?"

"We want to help. For a small price of course."

"Yes, I forgot. You're practically an alien. What do you want?"

"Guardian, your highness. Guardian. It's not about what we want. It's about what you want."

"I want?"

"Yes."

"I'm confused."

"Hm, do you know what we are?"

"A Guardian?"

She laughed for a few seconds and shook her head. "We're people at first glance. If you wait, we're defenders like guards. Wait a little more and you'll see," she began, fiddling with her hands. When she opened her hands, a Phoenix Feather laid in her palms. "There's more than what meets the eye." She moved it towards Queen Sun.

Queen Sun's hand shook as she took it. She felt every part of it, making sure it was real like the lily. "How is this possible?"

"Magic. It's everywhere. We live it, breathe it. We are creators. Hannah is limited to alive things, but I can make anything you want. Just say the word. There are no limits to art and imagination."

"Did you make this land? This planet?"

Guardian Phoebe giggled. "Not on my own."

"But you can really make anything?"

"Yes."

"Wow... that's some power you got."

"No more playing around. I know you see it. We can make this kingdom into anything you desire. Again, there's a price to pay."

"Which is?"

"You won't understand now, but we need you to promise to do whatever is necessary to keep your kingdom safe."

"Of course! Why wouldn't I-?"

"I'm not finished. It's important you do so because there's something we're here for. Do you believe in souls?"

"You just created a feather with your hands. I'd be lying if I said no."

"Good. The longer your kingdom lives, the stronger the souls will be. There's a powerful energy field here. We want it for a... project involving three souls. When it comes time, we will share this project with you. We also want a percentage of say around here."

"You can have however much you want. I'd be stupid not accepting this."

"I must warn you though what we're doing will take a long time. By the time things are set, the project can be dangerous if not handled carefully."

"I promise to keep the kingdom in order, to let you do your business, and protect the people in exchange for your help."

"Very well then. To a new beginning."

"To a new beginning."

They shook hands lightly and the Guardian left Queen Sun alone.

December 12th, 2023

Foxy poked Nature's shoulder, trying to get her attention. Princess Guardians had appeared and noticed Nature's eyes were grey. Nature had been sitting there, staring at the same page in the book from ELA for twenty minutes.

With one last poke, she snapped out of it, turning to Foxy. "Hm?"

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Ya haven't been saying or responding for the last twenty minutes," Nicole answered.

"Oh, I guess I spaced out," Nature shrugged. She looked over and saw from under the table, her right foot and Freedom's left foot were touching at the tips again.

Princess Guardians slammed her fist onto the table dramatically and said, "I have a request!"

"Do I want to know?" Nature groaned, watching Foxy snicker.

"If you're going to be like that, I'll hunt you down later."

"Okay, you do that."

After lunch and a few classes, the last hour of the school day would be used for clubs to meet. Foxy was not part of a club though he wanted to be. The truth was, no one wanted a Hunter part of their club. Therefore, he spent the hour reading in the library.

As for Nature, she was part of the Baking Club, but she ditched them for a little peace and quiet. Freedom was with the Sports Club, not because he wanted to be. He would have much rathered to be with Nature. At least Dasher would keep him company.

The hallways echoed with Nature's only feet walking, making a click sound with every step. She walked into the gym, appreciating the silence. When she took about twelve steps, Princess Guardians slid into the gym, practically running into Nature.

Nature jumped and whirled around, about to get defensive. "Wha- What are you doing here?" She said instead.

"Sorry, that- was a bit- overboard," Princess Guardians caught her breath.

"What do you want?" Nature rolled her eyes, not in the mood for company.

"My request."

"Go on."

"So, legally, I can't ask this of you-."

"Then, don't! I'm not looking for any more trouble."

"Shush! You wouldn't be. I would be."

Nature sighed, "What do you want from me?" She got a bad feeling about whatever the suspicious princess had in mind.

Princess Guardians closed the gym door they had walked through so all the doors were shut. "I want to study your magic."

"WHAT?" Nature exclaimed, thrown off board. "No! I'm not your personal ginny pig!"

"You wouldn't be."

"Forget it, Princess Guardians! Besides, I don't even know how to use my "magic"."

"You know I can't believe that, right?"

"Why not?"

"You're a Guardian. I've seen you do it. Fine, maybe you don't know how, and it just happened. I can help you!"

"I said no!"

She huffed, "I see you're going to be difficult. I guess you won't be needing this." Princess Guardians took Nature's journal out of her bag. Nature's eyes widened and clear fear was shown to the princess. "That's a nice shade of purple you got there."

"How did you even-?" She began, searching her hair, making sure Princess Guardians wasn't just trying to convince her. No, it was the real deal and there were no games involved.

"I found it about two months ago while looking around the dojo. Seems the Dark Magic liked it."

"That's impossible! I didn't even take it out once!"

"Oh, it is possible. The information is in my hands. I'll tell you; you are a complicated being to understand. Your thoughts are everywhere."

"Give it back," Nature demanded, refusing to give in.

"No, no, no. That's not what we're going to do here. You're going to let me study you-."

"Go to hell!"

"Right back at you!" Princess Guardians grinned. "Anyway, you're going to let me study you, or I can give this to my mother. Believe me, after all the things you got in this, I'm not confident she'll be so forgiving."

"So, you're going to black mail me?"

"I don't want to, but I will if you're not careful."

Nature was speechless. What was she supposed to do? According to Freedom, she had more control over the land than before. It would logically include Princess Guardians. However, how was she supposed to get out of this? Everyone knew even before not to even touch the book, but it was a weapon now.

"F-Fine," she agreed.

"I knew you'd make the right choice. I'll let you know when and where."

Biting her tongue, Nature thought back to the alliance they made. Did it even matter anymore? Why did every time she thought things were going to get better, something had to come and mess it up? A part of her was hurt. She knew better than to trust Princess Guardians, but because she helped them, Nature had let her guard down.

Before Princess Guardians opened the door to leave, she turned around back to Nature. "By the way, maybe Jack was somewhat right. If only he knew what I know now, you would be dead." Then, she pushed the door and was gone.

Nature breathed heavily, turning back around. She was frightened of what would happen to her in the princess' hands. She knew Princess Guardians knew what she was doing when it came to magic. How could she be so stupid? Why did she not realize it sooner? What would Princess Guardians do to her? There had been no mercy offered.

She felt sick, so she left the gym. She stumbled in the hallway to the women's bathroom. Arriving, she quickly went to a stall and threw up in the toilet. After a few minutes, her stomach was relieved by her anxiety stayed put.

Thoughts swarmed her mind, each one worse than the last. She left the stall and washed her hands. Then, she splashed water onto her face to calm herself. Perhaps she was over reacting. Well, she wanted to believe that, but she knew the truth. And without thinking twice, she pulled a small knife out of her hair.

One slit. Then, two. The third one in, Dasher walked out of a stall.

At first, Dasher did not notice Nature. A second later, she certainly did. "NATURE?" Dasher reacted in disbelief. Nature froze, not realizing someone had been there. "What are you doing? Are you crazy?" She hurried to her and tore the knife away.

With water droplets escaping, she looked up at Dasher, unsure what to say. The blood trailed down her arm, fresh and telling.

"Why?" Dasher's voice broke, putting her hands on Nature's shoulders. Nature closed her eyes and put her head down. Dasher picked up Nature's arm and looked at it, tracing the scars. She repeated it with the other arm. There were so many....

"I'm sorry," Nature sobbed, her shoulders getting tense. "I'm sorry."

Dasher hugged her best friend, locking her questions away. At the moment, Nature needed comfort. Not more pressure. She could care less about her club waiting for her. Nature was more important.

When school was over, Nature and Foxy went home. Dasher, Jewel, Butterfly, Nicole, and Freedom stuck around to talk. They decided to throw Nature a mini party after all. Dasher kept quiet about Nature's problem though for her sake. They set it up in the park and waited until dark to go get her.

Nature was a bit tired and wanted to be left alone, but they dragged her any way. She was surprised to see a decorated table with five presents and a cake. A few lanterns hung on the trees here and there, giving the area a fairytale look. It was chilly though.

They expected a smile, maybe a cheer, but Nature started crying at the sight. Why had they gone through the trouble? They gave each other confused looks and turning to worry.

"Do you not like it?" Butterfly asked.

"No, I- why did you do this?"

"You're our friend, dear, and you missed your birthday," Jewel answered.

For an hour, they cheered Nature up, had cake, and opened the presents. Nicole got her a scarf, Jewel got her blue jeweled earrings, Dasher made her cookies, and Butterfly gifted her a pink notepad. Freedom saved his for last, saying it was a surprise. The other four had no idea what it was.

Nature lifted a lid off of a small brown box. Slowly, a tiny lizard lifted its head out of the box. It had to be about four inches long. The reptile's back was rough with pointed scales. The color of the tiny creature was brown with patches of bright blue scales on its belly and throat.

"Aw, you're adorable!" Nature cooed.

"What is it?" Dasher asked. "Some kind of lizard, right?"

"Oh! That's an eastern fence lizard!" Butterfly smiled.

"I was going to get a Komodo dragon, but they're not classified as pets," Freedom said.

"Pun intended?" Nicole raised an eyebrow.

"Kinda...."

"Look at the blue on it! Males have blue patches, and females have black stripes," Butterfly continued.

"Oh, so you're a little guy then, huh?" Nature said to the fence lizard. He hopped onto Nature's palm and wagged his tail. "Your name is Ozzy? Well, that's a cute name." She stroked his back.

In the distance, the clock tower rung, informing any awake it was nine o' clock. Dasher decided they should get home since they have school tomorrow. Butterfly, Jewel, and Nicole agreed with her. So, they said their goodbyes, and left Freedom, Nature, and Ozzy.

Ozzy scurried up Nature's arm, up through her hair, and arrived at the top of her hair. He curled himself and fell asleep. Freedom chuckled.

"I think he likes you," he said.

"I've never had a pet before."

"Really? How come?"

"Never really thought about it, but this little guy is going to melt me."

"Oh, no! We cannot have that! What would I do without you?" Freedom played back.

"Don't think I'm going down without you!" Nature giggled.

"Oh?"

"Yeah! I'm not dying alone!"

"Well, I might as well marry you-...then...," he realized what he started to say and blushed. "Uh, that slipped."

Nature blushed at the thought. "Bit early for that, don't you think?"

"N-No! I didn't mean it! It just fell out!"

"I'm messing with you," she smiled.

Freedom laughed nervously, "You got me."

"Come on," she grabbed his hand. "We should clean up and sleep."

Late into the night, about midnight, Nature shuffled in her sleep. Ozzy awoke several times and shifted on Nature's hair. She was having a nightmare though it seemed too familiar to only be a dream. Perhaps it was a memory she wished to forget.

For an unknown reason, the nightmare was about the Guardians.

She shot up, breathing heavily and shaking. Ozzy had landed on the floor, poor fella. Nature calmed herself as the tiny lizard squeaked. She offered her hand to him and lifted him back up onto the bed. He curled back up like a cat and fell asleep.

It made her feel a bit better until she recalled the horrors her mind had created. She sighed, being thankful it had not been real. Everyone praised the Guardians for their power and defense, but Nature knew the sickening truth.

Maybe she was a Guardian because she knew too much.

She shook her head, deciding the idea was ridiculous. How would they even know she knew such things? Unless, they stalk her.

Feeling uneasy, she lifted Ozzy off of her and placed him down gently onto the bed. Then, she got up to go the kitchen. She got a cup, filled it with water, and stood at the window, being paranoid enough to think one of the Guardians would be there.

"You're up late," Grey said behind her, causing her to jump. He had just gotten home from the corn fields and noticed her. She turned around.

"Just getting water," she shrugged, relaxing when she noted it was only him.

"You sure about that? You seem paranoid."

"I'm fine," she insisted with her eyes turning black. Grey gave a questionable face.

"If you say so. By the way, a letter from Settle Sun came earlier for you. I think it's from Queen Sun."

"Ah, of course. She's probably wondering if I'm still alive."

"Not funny, Nature," Grey saddened. "It's in the slot."

"Okay, thank you."

"Uh huh. Good night."

"Good night."

Grey turned and tip toed up the stairs. Nature walked into the living room to a box attached to the wall. She pulled out an envelope with her name on it. Indeed, it was from the castle. She tore it open, unraveled the note, and read.

'Dear Guardian Nature-.'

"Ugh," Nature rolled her eyes.

'Are you doing alright? I have not heard from you in a bit. I was wondering if maybe you would like your job back. Perhaps you quit because of pure pressure? I'm sure we can work something out. We are not sure why you quit, but if you decide not to come back, could you at least write back why?

I also send this letter to you because of an emergency about the Hunters. The House wants to expand land, and they are turning to the Hunters' Territory. I am not asking for you to help in any shape or form, but I thought you should have the right to know your home is in danger without your input. You were right many years ago. They were looking for an opening to attack.

Look, I do not want to see the Hunters fade. I hold the trigger, and they are threatening a protest. You've made your point about not liking this position of power you've gained but I beg you. I beg you to help. For me, for them!

I worry the Communicators' will not be enough to convince them erasing all the forest will do harm. I worry the Hunters' lives are in danger. I worry a civil war will occur upon the people of Equality.

Please, Nature, please! I'll do anything to have you back, even if it kills me! The Hunters must be protected! Surely you think so too? The kingdom is a reck without your talents at keeping information and people in order.

...Your life is also in danger. The House is talking bitterly of you. You will not do work, you quit your job, your distaste for the Guardians, your current lack of leadership. All of those are spreading like wild fire. But perhaps if you showed up, just once, they would settle. Remember, they never liked you in the first place because of your gender, home, and age.

Prove them wrong.

Prove to them what you have proved to me.

You are strong, considerate, caring, courageous, responsible, determined, intelligent, organized, respectful, and understanding. Forget you are a Guardian for a moment. With your battle against Sir Jack, you demonstrated bravery. Your personality and opinion will be what matters.

If you change your mind, the next meeting is on December 13th at 1:30 p.m.

Sincerely, Queen Sun.'

Nature sighed. She was too tired to think about the road ahead. Therefore, she went back to bed with no problems.

December 13th, 2023

In the morning, Foxy and Nature headed off to school. Nature remained silent, remembering the letter. Ozzy was in her hair. It was against the rules to have a pet in school but they never said in your hair too.

The walk to school was long since they were not talking. Foxy grew worried something had happened. The wind also blew, making them colder than usual. When they arrived, their friends and Freedom were nowhere to be seen. Since they were cold, they went into the school. Once in, a hall monitor stopped Nature and said the principal needed to see her.

Nature grew suspicious, keeping in mind it would not be the first time Principal Moon, or Princess Moon, wanted her for a "reason". What could she want now?

Opening the principle's door, she walked in and saw Dasher, Nicole, Jewel, Freedom, and Butterfly looking terrified. Nature looked around. Was there something frightening them? Principal Moon looked at her seriously.

"Did something happen?" Nature asked at last.

"I don't know. Maybe you six should tell me," Principal Moon sat back, continuing to be stern.

"Uh, sorry, but did I miss something?" She looked towards the others. "What happened? Are you guys okay?"

"Last night, you six left the gym in shambles."

Nature, raising an eyebrow, glanced from the others to the principal. "No, we did no such thing."

"Yes, you did."

"No, we were at the park last night. We couldn't have."

"That's not what the cheerleaders claim."

"The cheerleaders?" Nature scoffed. "What did they "claim" exactly?"

"You six messed up the gym."

"No, we didn't! We weren't even there!"

"I don't want to hear your excuses."

"It's not an excuse! It's the truth!"

"Haven't you six been in enough trouble already? The consequences will be less severe if you tell the truth and why."

Nature facepalmed, "Just when I thought things couldn't get worse. Principal Moon, I swear to you we did nothing wrong!"

"Mehm, suspension for a week, all of you," she shook her head.

"WHAT? BUT-!"

"I SAID NO EXCUSES!" Principal Moon raised her voice.

Looking at her with disgust and disbelief, Nature wanted to yell at her until her face was blue. But from a look of horror from the others, she knew she was only making it worse. However, her stubbornness refused to take the blame for someone else's actions. She could not let her friends and Freedom get in trouble for such a thing.

"It was not us," Nature began calmly. "But I can clean the gym in exchange for them not getting suspended."

"Nature, you don't have to-!" Jewel started.

"No, it's fine! It's nothing new," she sighed.

Principal Moon leaned forward, thinking about Nature's offer. "Fine, get to it."

The lights in the gymnasium were dim, for the room was empty so not many lights were needed. Poor Nature went through with the punishment for her group and the cheerleaders' behavior. As long as her friends and Freedom were not blamed, she would clean.

She was slightly hurt though. It had been a while since she had a decent dose of happiness. Even Freedom could only do so much for her. She had loved the party they threw for her, but the cheerleaders had somehow ruined it.

At least she had her favorite present to keep her company, the lizard. She thought back to his name. It was a cute little name, Ozzy.

Quietly, Nature filled a bucket on wheels with soap and water, reflecting on her journey of "becoming a Guardian". She was still frustrated about the whole event, but she was thinking twice about going back to the castle. She had her fun with a simple life, something she had not had in nine years.

Nine years.

She saddened, for she had wasted nine years of her life and for what? Here she was, mopping the floor as a Guardian. Her body ached for action. Was it a new Guardian feeling? Something was saying, 'Go! Go to the castle! Show them who's boss!' She pushed the thought aside.

Out of view, behind the back gym doors, the five cheerleaders, who were responsible, watched Nature out of curiosity. They had attempted to ruin her day, and they did but taking a blame was not their intention.

Don't get the wrong idea, they were not going to apologize. The goal in the long run was to see what behavior would be new from Nature. The idea had been scattered across grades, yet no one wanted to test it.

Being the nosy cheerleaders they were, they decided to attempt it. Then, they would share with everyone else.

Confusion spread between them as Nature continued the work with little emotion. Ozzy watched her every move from on the cart as she moved the mop back and forth, dipped it into the water, and repeated.

At one point, he squeaked to get her attention. Nature stopped and smiled at him.

"Do you need something?" She asked with such kindness in her eyes, the cheerleaders almost felt guilty. Ozzy made a clicking sound. "I know but it is what it is."

'Why would you take the responsibility?' Ozzy asked.

Nature paused and her smile faded. Instead, a sad blue appeared. "They don't deserve this."

'And you do?'

She stared at the tiny creature. What was she supposed to say? She wanted to say the truth. But if she did, someone who spoke with animals may learn her secrets. It was bad enough Princess Guardians had control over her.

"Don't worry your little head about me. It's not important if I do or not."

A few moments later, Foxy burst through the gym entrance with a panicked expression. "Nature! What happened? What did you do?"

"I did nothing," she continued to mop.

"That's not what everyone else is saying!"

"Then, everyone else is liars."

"I'm so confused," Foxy sighed.

"We got framed. I couldn't let them get suspended, so I'm cleaning the gym. Easy squeezy. Go back to whatever class you have or something. I'm fine."

"You ALWAYS say you're fine, but you're not!"

"Foxy," Nature stopped to look up at him. "I have it under control. I don't need a babysitter."

"I'm not babysitting-!"

"YES, you are! Just go! I'd rather do this in peace than argue about my "mental health" with you!"

Foxy calmed himself for a moment, deciding how to approach Nature from a better angle. "I found the letter. You left it on the table."

His sister stared at him with a look unreadable. She wandered away from his gaze and looked at the floor. Nature seemed troubled, gripping the mop tightly.

"Were you going to tell us?"

"... I don't know," she mumbled.

"Why do you mean you don't know?"

"Ugh, Foxy, there isn't a lot of time to make a decision-."

"You have to do something though! Our family is going to flip!"

"Do you think I don't know that?"

"I do know you know it, but, gosh darn it, you're being more stubborn than a wild mule!"

"What do you want me to do? Barge in and tell some of the most important representatives 'no'?"

"YES!"

Nature sighed and rubbed her forehead. "I can't," she remained as calm as her emotions would allow.

"I don't understand why it would be so difficult to just do your job," Foxy crossed his arms.

"I don't understand why it's so difficult to make you understand it's not as easy as it sounds."

"But you're-!"

"Please, do not finish that sentence! I don't know how much more of this I can take! Everything is Guardian this, Guardian that! Can I just be a person for one day?"

Foxy stayed silent.

"I know you're worried, and I want to help. I'm just not ready to play the whole fake-it-till-you-make-it game yet. Believe me, I'm aware I have no choice but to except my fate. They made that crystal clear. Just, I don't know if I'm ready for the responsibility of thousands of people's lives. Do I even look like Guardian material to you?"

"Um, well... no," he rubbed the back of his neck.

"See? I even had to take self-defense classes, which was forced against my will! Foxy, how am I supposed to protect a whole kingdom when I can barely even protect myself?"

"You seemed pretty capable of it two months ago."

"I have no idea what that was," she shook her head. "I have no memory of it. I guess it just happened."

"... I think you can do a lot more than you think. Must I remind you you froze your own foot with ice that appeared out of nowhere?"

"No."

"Oh, also, what are you beating yourself up for? You keep track of everything any way. You know everyone and everything. What do you have to lose?"

"My innocence."

"What?"

"Who knows what Thing One and Thing Two knows? I don't want to be wrapped up in their schemes!"

"You're a little late, don't cha think? Maybe you are one of their "schemes"."

"Oh," Nature suddenly gave a horrified face.

"I didn't mean anything-."

"No, no, you're right!" She continued in despair. "Karma is a bitch! Why now though? Why not then?"

"Nature, I was kidding! You have real parents! They didn't create you or anything! I don't think that's even possible."

"I'm learning anything is possible in Equality!"

"Okay, okay," he sighed. "By the way, who said you were innocent? If it was Freedom, you may want to get a few facts straight with him."

"No one did," she blushed and her eyes turned pink. "Leave him out of this."

"I can't pick on my sister a bit?" He grinned.

"You want to live or what?"

"Changing the subject? Classical Nature move. Wait, did you just say you'd go?"

"Possibly."

"That's a relief! Maybe you're not being so bad after all."

"Whatever floats your boat."

"Hey, now I gotta ask, do you think you're immortal?"

"Huh?" Nature looked back up from continuing to mop. "Am I what?"

"Oh, come on, sis! Everyone knows the Guardians were here first. That's at least a thousand years."

"I didn't think about that! Oh no! I'll have to spend eternity with the Guardians and Princess Guardians!"

"What's so bad about that?"

"Don't even get me started! Ugh, then, I'll watch generation after generation after generation die! Do you think Guardians can commit suicide?"

"Woah! Woah! Woah! First of all, I better never hear that out of your mouth again or I'm telling mom and dad! Second of all, how would I know? I'm not the Guardian here! You are! If you're so worried, why don't you, I don't know, talk to them?"

"I don't want to talk to them! They can dig their own holes for all I care!"

"That's not very nice," Guardian Jason said, appearing from the shadows of the bleachers. "Who rained on your parade and died?" Foxy jumped. "Scared?"

"What do you want?" Nature shot a nasty snarl at him.

"Jesus, woman! Don't be a Karen. You act like we're a disease when you're the only disease here."

"Excuse me?"

"Don't 'excuse me'! Phebes is like, "Nature is so powerful and above all!" But I think we don't need you, since my aunt is obviously the superior Guardian."

"What's your problem? I never did anything to you!"

"Yeah, I'm just going to go," Foxy slowly backed away. He left the gym, hoping his sister wouldn't pick a fight.

"You're, like, not even fully Guardian!" Guardian Jason complained.

"Look, buddy, I don't want to be a part of it any more than you want me a part of it. Keep your superiority! I don't want it."

"Yeah, I can't do that."

"Do you not want me or not?"

"I said my opinion, but it's not my call. That's their job."

"What do you want from me if I'm not yours to watch then?"

"Me personally, I don't want anything from you. You're fun to annoy though."

"Yay for me," Nature rolled her eyes.

"I'm a general by the way."

"No, you're not."

"Yes, I am. I trained some of the best Guardians there was. Still do."

"I don't believe you. Wait, other Guardians? Is that what you said?"

"Uh, no?" He retreated. Clearing his throat, he said, "No. No, I said people. Some of the best people."

"Liar."

"Like you're any better. Don't think we don't know. Pheebs tells me everything. They know all, and they see all. There is nothing you can keep a complete secret forever. I bet you're wondering why you're a Guardian in the first place. We all thought the same at first. The only difference and scary thing about you are your destiny is uncertain. We depend on your success. So, if Pheebs says you're going to be something extraordinary, then I'll take the risk. Just know one thing: you are our last chance."

"What does that mean?"

"It means no one has, or ever will, exist like you. You're special, an exception. Let me put it in a certain perspective for you. You're capable of practically anything. Swayed the wrong way, you can become as dangerous as being able to tear the Universe to shreds. Taught correctly, you'll be able to create new Universes. Maybe even bring people back from the dead. Nature, you are the Guardian of Unity. You have no idea how important you are."

"Unity?"

"Yes, but you already knew it. Some may call it luck, but we call your episode with Jack an Awakening. Your soul is awake, and it will become stronger. You're one of us even if I don't like ya."

"Then, what am I even supposed to-?" She said as he walked away from her. "-Do?" Nature finished when he disappeared at the blink of an eye. "I'm not crazy! He was here, right?"

Ozzy nudged her foot softly. Nature sighed. The Guardian had created more questions than answers, and she was not sure what it all meant. So, being a Guardian was their choice? Or... not?

"What am I going to do, Ozzy?" Her head hung low.

She saw her reflection in the pool of water in the mop bucket. Nature thought she looked tired and done with the world. Quickly, she scrapped the thought aside, not wanting to get any harmful temptations. A part of her felt as if it were missing. There was a hole needed to be filled, but she had no idea what it was.

Well, she lied to herself on the last part. Her gut told her the answer, and it twisted her mind, not wanting to accept the truth.

"I'm a Guardian aren't I, Ozzy?" She saddened at the water. "I can't be normal because there was never anything "normal" about me. Yet I can't help but wonder, then who is this new Guardian? What am I supposed to do? Why can't I accept who I'm meant to be?"

He climbed up onto the cart to get higher up to her. Ozzy tilted his head, not understanding such questions.

"I can play baker, student, and scribe, but I cannot fool my heart. It knows. I know. I guess there really was a reason for the stars to be special to me. It's calling me, but where do I even begin?" She looked him in the eyes but raised her head to the ceiling. "In darkness there is light, and in light there is darkness. The Moon can block the Sun, but the sunlight will still shine."

'Where did you hear that?' Ozzy asked.

"Nowhere," she shook her head. "I made it up but it's the truth. If the Sun can rise, then I must go on to do the right thing. Who knows? Maybe I'll end up liking being a Guardian."
