But she guessed that's what made him the perfect person for the job. He looked harmless yet Ouyang Xueqing could faintly felt the strength that he had deliberately concealed.
He was like a sheathed sword, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Ling Wenfu walking with her daughter, Ling Xiaochen, wasn't a strange scene, but the people were attracted to the little girl with flower mask covering half of her face that was walking alongside him.
There was something about the little girl. She had an aura of composure, the kind of air where she couldn't be bothered by her noisy surrounding, yet her round black eye was continuously observing the place.
Who was she?
They were curious, yet no one had stepped out to ask. It was a rule in this place that anything, no matter how bizarre it was, that they saw or heard must be forgotten the moment they got out of the front door.
It was not their place to ask questions.
Soon, they were pulled back to the gamble and the round of excitement began.
Ouyang Xueqing was led into a huge black door with row of skulls decorating them. She titled her head as she reached her hand out to stroke one of them. "Is this real?"
Ling Wenfu was obviously taken aback by her question. He chuckled and evaded. "What do you think?"
"Hmm…it's too smooth to be real. Skulls shouldn't be in this kind of good condition and the colors seemed a bit fake. It was decoration, am I right?"
"Excellent observation." Ling Wenfu was astonished by the little girl's calm behavior. She didn't show an ounce of fear or apprehension being alone in this foreign place.
If anything, she looked like a queen inspecting her subordinate's place.
She was totally unlike of what he'd heard of her.
Ling Wenfu finally decided to take her more seriously. He performed a short yet complicated kind of seals on the skulls, and a moment later, a glow of fire were lit inside each of their empty eye sockets, their jaw opened wide with a crackling sound and the door clicked open.
Ouyang Xueqing's eyes bulged wide. What was that? She had never seen anything like that even in the Royal Palace!
It was so fascinating!
"It's a seal formed from one's spiritual energy." He explained patiently. "There are many kind of them, but this one here is designed so that no one aside from me can open the door."
"Or else?"
"Or else…" He pushed the door opened and let her enter first. "The skull will kill you." His tone was soft and even, yet it successfully form goosebumps on her skin.
This man was really terrifying and awesome ah!
The room looked like an ordinary office with a pair of huge table and chair with lots of paper stacked above it. A pair of large couches in brown was placed immaculately in front of it.
Two of its wall was decorated with shelves filled with books and things that she hadn't seen before. There was a section where it was full of jar in unknown dull liquid.
"What was that?" Ouyang Xueqing pointed at a jar with bubbling liquid.
"Poison." He said cheerfully. "Don't touch them or your finger will…"
Ouyang Xueqing hastily retracted her hand that almost touched the jar out of curiosity. "Will what?" She asked nervously.
The man looked at her for a second more, making Ouyang Xueqing grew nervous. "Nevermind. It's better if you don't know. Oblivion is bliss, remember?" He smiled mirthlessly.
She gulped and reminded herself not to get too close to this mysterious and dangerous man lest she died without anyone knowing.
Ling Xiaochen broke the tense and awkward atmosphere with her clear voice. "Daddy why do you pretend to look intimidating and charismatic? It doesn't suit you ah! You look like an old pervert!"
Ling Wenfu eyed her daughter helplessly.
Is this really his daughter? His biological daughter? Or else, why did Ling Wenfu felt like her sole existence was to insult and trample his dignity?
Suddenly, the harmless looking Ling Wenfu returned. "Do you know what is called 'maintaining perfunctory to attract customer' hmm?"
Ling Xiaochen munched on snacks and waved her hand sloppily. "Forget it. You are not suited for that."
The veins on his temple almost burst. His lips twitched and he tried really hard to rein his temper. "Do you want to go out on your own or do you want daddy to throw you out?"
"No way!" Ling Xiaochen blurted out. She clutched the couch as if her life was depended on it. "I'm not leaving! The Princess was brought here by me, how could you throw me out?"
Ling Wenfu rolled his eyes exasperatedly and questioned Ouyang Xueqing through his eyes.
Ouyang Xueqing blinked and nodded. "I don't see the problem with Ling Xiaochen here, anyway she had already knew what I am looking for." And I am not assured of being left alone with you.
Of course the man didn't realize her unspoken thought. He glared at her daughter and warned her to behave before he gestured for Ouyang Xueqing to take a seat while he himself sat beside her daughter.
"So, Imperial Princess Ouyang Xueqing, to what matter do I owe the honor of this visit?"
Ouyang Xueqing steeled her heart, made her decision that moment and spoke clearly. Her baby voice was steadfast and slow, it gave people the impression of calmness and wit.
Ling Wenfu almost forgot that he was currently speaking to a ten—almost—eleven years old child.
"I am looking for someone."
Her mind was filled with the white robed figure that held the bloodied sword. Her heart constricted slightly. She didn't know why, but she strongly felt that she had to find him. She had to find him no matter how long it took and how far he was.
"Ah." Ling Wenfu chuckled. "I have noticed the imperial guard's movement these past few months. Yet, it seems like they didn't succeed?"
"No." She shook her head. "They didn't found anything. At all."
He stroked his chin full of beard. "Tell me more about it."
Ouyang Xueqing told her of how Mo Yujian had saved her from the deranged beast and how they couldn't even found out his whereabouts here in the Beast Mainland.
She mumbled under her breath. "Brother Ren said that he may be using a fake name, but I'm sure that he's not lying to me. My instinct say so, and you know how our instinct is mostly accurate?"
"90% accurate." Ling Wenfu corrected. "So the fake name thing is still another possibility."
Ouyang Xueqing wanted to rebuke: "But—"
"Stop, Princess. I know what you wanted to say." He pursed his thin lips and contemplated. "If you're really sure that he's not lying, then there will only be one responsibility."
"What?"
Ling Wenfu's expression was unreadable when he remarked: "This Mo Yujian guy was not our kind to begin with!"
"What?!" Ouyang Xueqing was flabbergasted. Even Ling Xiaochen choked on her snacks and coughed.
"Do you mean he is…a human?"
