"Uh he-hello. Can I help you with anything?" I nervously asked the two men at the door.
"Ah yes. Recently a classmate of yours has gone missing, Eric Plaus. His parents are worried sick." The older officer spoke while showing his gleaming badge. Seemed legit.
The taller and more youthful officer got to the point and showed his badge. "Look kid, we won't pester you for too long but we're questioning a few people on the disappearance of him. The school was polite enough to give us a list of his classmates. Mind us having a word with you?"
"Ah-no! Not at all." I welcomed the officers into my house and politely gestured to a few chairs by the dining table. I sat across.
"Well let's get started. Last night, Eric didn't come home as usual. He's been missing since. His parents reported it. Our main theory is Eric has ran off from home. He's a bit of a wild child, as his parents put. Can you give us any idea of what could have caused that? Or anything to suggest otherwise?"
"Uh well I wasn't really his friend. He was kinda mean to me."
Ugh, his parents are worried? Damn it, this guilt is eating me up. To think I'm still associating with his murderer. It felt really wrong.
Do I give anything more than that? Do I tell them about the fight or will that make them start suspecting me? I'm not a cop- how would I know what they'd think??
"Mhm, did he say anything to you, like voicing his dissatisfaction with his home life or parents?"
"Ah, no. He didn't ever say anything like that." Telling the truth is fine just don't tell too much. If I lie and they find the body they would show up again.
"Any large incident that could set something off?"
Do I tell them? Maybe they would be satisfied with the truth and decide that the fight was the reason he 'ran away?'
"Well.. we did get into an argument in class which resulted in him pushing me. We both got punished with a lenient one week suspension and an apology to each other." I nonchalantly replied as best as I could.
"Can you tell us what this argument entailed?" The younger officer chimed in.
"Uh er, it was nothing about running away- just arguing over if a girl in our class was a... slut or something." While it wasn't a lie, I did stretch it a bit. I scratched my head.
The two officers chuckled and gave each other amused looks. "Alright, thanks for the cooperation, kid. Try not to get into any more trouble." The younger officer told me.
If I was any more paranoid I would think that last sentence as a sign they knew what had happened. That would be insane though.
"Yeah yeah of course, good luck!" The two officers left and I breathed a light sigh of relief.
Holy crap, what the hell? An investigation? I should have known this would happen. Keeping my mouth shut won't do well if they keep pestering me! It's fine, it's fine. They think that he ran off, they probably won't visit me again. I'm fine.
My phone vibrated. Probably Hannya, after all she was the only one who really texted me. Should I tell her? If I did she may kill more people and endanger herself again. But at the same time I wanted to give her a heads up, just in case she happened to run into any trouble.
What the hell am I thinking? If I were to do that it wouldn't just be ignoring a murder, I would be aiding the murderer. I could get in trouble too!
"Hannya 9:35: I miss u (╥﹏╥)
Hannya 9:36: Im coming 2 see u after school"
I texted back while grabbing milk from the fridge. A new carton, I thought.
"9:38: ur in school u should pay more attention to the teacher :/
Hannya 9:38: I'm guessing ur eating now. The milk is almost out. I left you some leftovers from yesterday in the fridge"
I swished around the milk, barely enough for half a bowl of cereal. Since I would be suspended for a week and home for even more (this was the last week of school before winter break after all), I could have some breakfast.
"9:40: thanks
9:40: I love you"
I left her on seem, no need to reply back. It was a bit embarrassing anyways. Jeez, did she have to say that stuff out of nowhere. At least give me a warning, she says it or texts it almost casually. I doubt I'll ever be used to anything like that.
While eating I thought about school. Ugh imagine all the work I'll have to do once I get back. Can't believe I was stupid enough to push Eric back. Maybe he would be alive right now if I didn't.
What would I do to pass the time until Hannya came over? I didn't feel like reading or playing games I was bad at for hours?
"9:50: what u doing rn?"
Nothing else to do right? She doesn't seem to care much about school right now anyways.
"Hannya 9:51: working on a worksheet while teacher is grading I miss u
9:52: oh ok"
Oh wait I forgot, I had nothing to talk about. Hannya soon sent me a picture of her self in class. She had her hair up in a pony tail and she was smiling. Cute. What do I reply with though? Well we're dating right? It wouldn't be weird if I texted that. I hesitantly slid my finger on my screen and sent the message.
"9:54: Cute."
Huh, no response, jeez a blew it didn't I? Ugh, is she weirded out by my response maybe? It was weird, wasn't it? She just decided to send a picture of herself in class and I...
A few minutes passed and my phone rang, Hannya was calling me.
"Why are you calling me while school is in session. Yo-"
Hannya breathed heavily into the phone. "Do-Did you really think I looked cute?! I'll take more pictures of myself if you want. You sure it wasn't a typo, was the picture really cute?"
"Uh yeah- it was cute, really cute. You should get back to work righ-"
"It's fine I'm in the restrooms. I really miss you, y'know." Hannya sounded really sad. "Now I don't see you in school, I get so lonely. I miss holding hands with you in the hallways, I miss walking with you, I miss-"
"Yeah yeah I get it," I was as red as a tomato, jeez. Couldn't this girl tone it down a bit? "I-I miss you too. Now, you should really get back to class."
"Yeah yeah of course." Hannya sighed.
"Oh wait. Before you go, Hannya. Two cops came over to my house and asked me some questions about Eric. I don't think they suspect me, I just wanted to give you a heads up in case they came to speak with you."
"Caleb you do care about me! I'm blushing."
"Alright uh bye." I took the phone from my ear.
"I lo-" I hung up before she could finish.
"Ugh!!" I threw my controller down on the floor as I saw the red flashing "Game Over" screen on the T.V. Screen. "Stupid game. Stupid lag!" So much for trying to be productive. I checked the time. Holy crap! 2:30! How long had I been hypnotised by the game?"
I tried watching television but it only entertained me for so little. Maybe I should try working out a bit? I'm pretty skinny after all and that fight with Eric made me realise just how incompetent I was.
Disgraceful. Could barely do two pushups without collapsing into a sweaty mess. I continued to do sit ups until I could no longer. Jeez, I really need to get into better shape. Now that I thought about it, wouldn't Hannya be a bit of a suspect? She had Eric in a few of her classes and who's to say someone didn't see her with him? It's fine, I thought. As long as she doesn't mess up if they ever visit her we'll be fine. Hell, maybe they won't even visit her? Come to think of it, Hannya should be coming to my house my now. My phone started vibrating, a call from Hannya.
"Hello?"
"Hmm. I may have a harder time not getting caught." Hannya sounded mildly dissatisfied while grunting. Was that digging I heard?
"What?! What do you mean ?!" Is she serious?? What could have Hannya given away?
"Well right now I'm digging up that bastards body. I'm thinking of a better way to dispose of it."
"What? I thought you said it was already taken care of?" I gritted my teeth. This girl...
"Yeah well I thought of a better way to dispose of it. I'll freeze the body and cut it up into pieces. It'll make it harder to pin an exact date of death."
I resisted the urge to gag. "Yeah yeah just get it done quickly. I'm pissed off that you're waiting till now to do this."
"Sorry, Caleb! I promise to do better next time, I promise!" I stopped hearing the sound of a metal shovel hitting the earth. "Please don't be mad at me! I just..." she breathed out. "I'll do better next time, Caleb."
Great, now she's trying to make me feel sorry. She killed someone and isn't even being responsible when she could get caught anytime. Slip ups like this can't be tolerated.
"You're acting like there will be a 'next time.' If there is a 'next time' you know what I'll do. I don't want to do that," I sighed. "I just wish you didn't kill him."
"I'm sorry for stressing you out, Caleb. I needed to protect you though! You know that right? I did it because I had to. I can't have any one hurt you, you're mine it's not right for people to be mean to you. It's not right! I really do love you. I really do!"
"Yeah, whatever you don't have to come over today after you're done- I'm doing important stuff." That was a big fat lie. I just couldn't put up with her right now. It's hard to believe I was somewhat eagerly waiting for her to show up before.
"Bu-But I'm almost done! An... And I haven't seen you all day! I'll really miss you!" Hannah fervently tried to get me to change my mind.
"I told you, I can't." I urged her. Ugh, she was making this really hard.
"I'm really tired. I-I've been digging for so long, I just really want to crawl up with you."
"Hannya, I already told you... I'm gonna hang up now. Uh I'll talk later I-I guess."
I laid in my bed and stared at the ceiling fan as it completed rotations. Couldn't Hannya be more careful? She's gonna get both of us killed someday.
I tried taking a nap, even though it wasn't even close to night. Seems I was able to though as my conscious dove in and out till I was out. I couldn't sleep well the night before for some reason so the nap was appreciated. It didn't last long at all though. I was woken by a small finger lightly poking me on the cheek. Hannya was on top of me, giving me a crazy smile, her dark brownish-maroon eyes not blinking. Her jet black hair laid on my chest and it covered parts of her face.
"I told you I really missed you. You shouldn't avoid me. You said you had something important to do. Liar."
The blood in face drained.
