The Devil's Lettuce

It was now Wednesday and I could go back to school today.

Ughhhh whyyyyyyyy?!?!

I wasn't apart of the cheer squad anymore, so it was going to be pretty boring to just go home after school. I needed a new routine.

Yesterday with Chester was pretty intense. I hope he doesn't bring it up and moves past it. I don't want to be reminded of it.

After I got home yesterday, I just decided to pack some of Nick's stuff into a suitcase and I drove back to the rehab center to give it to him. I had nothing else to do and I couldn't go to sleep.

I started driving around Philly and got lost for a while. I had to use my GPS to get back home. By the time I got back home, it was already four in the morning.

I finally got out of bed after 15 minutes of snoozing my alarm. I went to the bathroom and did my daily routine.

I decided to walk to school today. It wasn't far and I needed the walk to clear my mind. When I got outside, I could still see Max's car in his driveway, but I just kept walking.

I barely slept last night. My mind just wouldn't shut up. It just kept me up, reminding me about the past.

Why did my mind have to be such a meany? I just wanted a fresh start and to forget about the past.

When I finally made it to school, it was still a little early, so I just headed to my locker.

While I was walking through the halls, I spotted Alexandra standing by one of the lockers, so I went to say hi.

"Hey girl hey," she greets me. She had a hat on her head, some glasses, and a cute matching sweatsuit outfit.

"Hey," I say back, yawning, feeling exhausted.

"You need a pick me up," she asks, waving some brownies she had in her hand. My eyes light up. I was kind of hungry.

I nod my head and she passes me a ziplock bag with a brownie in it. I take it out of the bag and hurry up and scarf it down.

"Hmm, thank you." When I finished the brownie and opened my eyes, I saw that Alexandra was looking at me wide eyed.

"What," I ask her.

"You ate the whole thing?!?!"

"Yeah. What's the problem? What did you put in the brownies? There soooooo good," I ask her.

"DAMN GIRL! Your such a daredevil. You must do this all the time. I could never just eat a whole pot brownie in one go. Your my new best friend." Alexandra looks proud of me, but I almost choke on my saliva.

"Can you repeat what you just said," I ask her slowly.

"Your my new best friend," she says confused.

"No. What did you say before that?"

"I could never just eat a whole pot brownie in one go? If you don't want to be friends with me because I can't eat a whole pot brownie in one go, I understand. I'm a disappointment," she says looking sad now.

"You just gave me a pot brownie without telling me what was in it?!?!"

"Did you not know it was pot," she asks.

"NO!"

"I thought you understood what I meant when I asked if you wanted a pick me up! Oh shit! I'm sorry, Spencer. Maybe you should go home."

"I can't. This is my fourth day of school. I was already suspended for two days and they'll probably call my mom. What the fuck, Alex?!?! You just planned on being high all day?!?"

"I'm always high! That's how I get through school. Ok, don't panic. Maybe you'll be fine. Look, I have an extra pair of glasses, so no one will see if your eyes are red. We'll just have to make sure someone is with you at all times."

"I've never been high before! What if the teacher asks me to do something in class?"

"We'll figure it out. I have my first class with you. We have painting with Mrs.George. She usually just assigns us something to do and let's us do our own thing. You probably won't even feel the effects until 3rd period and you have trig with Chester and Parker, I think."

"You just better hope this doesn't kill me," I say in a serious voice when the first bell rings. We head to class and Alex makes sure to sit by me.

Mrs.George doesn't tell me to introduce myself and she seems chill. She just shows us how to draw geometric shapes and assigns us to practice it for the rest of the class period.

When it started getting closer to the ending of class, I started to feel different. Lighter and waiver.

Oh shit.

When the bell rings, Alexandra walks me to my next class. I swear I was starting to see things I shouldn't have been seeing. I could see smells and taste colors.

"Holy fuck! Are teacher's Adam Sandler?!?!" I whisper into Chester's ear when I noticed Alex sat me down next to him.

Parker looks over at me weird. I was sitting between the both of them. I put my hand on Parker's face.

Haha, it's so mushy.

"You have bushy eyebrows," I tell him, smiling.

"Are you high," Chester asks me, lifting my glasses, making me squint from the light that slipped in.

"Oh my god, she is," Parker answers shocked.

"And I thought I was bad."

"It's not my fault. Alex didn't tell me she made her brownies with the devils lettuce!" Chester just laughed.

"Damn. Is it the herbs or did Chester's laugh get sexier? Burrrr, I've got chills running down my spine. Oh shit, I said that out loud."

"I guess it's a truth serum as well," Parker says.

"Ohhhhhh, do you guys know I quit the cheer squad! Those preppy bitches can kiss my ass. OH NO, DON'T TELL LILY AND SKY I SAID THAT!" Chester slaps his hands over my mouth.

"Be quite Spencer," Chester whispers to me.

"Your hand smells good," I tell him and lick his hand. He pulls his hand away.

"Grossssssss! Maybe your nickname should be spitty." He wipes his hand on his pants.

"Parker, never let anyone tell you your less than what you are. You are very special and you were one of my first friends when I got here. I wish you well. Remember these words 'You is kind, you is smart, and you is important," I tell Parker, giving him a hug.

"Did you just quote 'The Help'"Chester asks me. I look at him confused.

"Oh. I guess I did. This devils lettuce is strong. Dude, I feel like I'm flying." I can't stop laughing.

While class continued, Chester shut me up by letting me entertain myself with drawing on his arm with pen. I didn't pay attention to the lesson at all. Adam Sandler assigned us homework and it was time for lunch.

I jumped onto Parker's back and he gave me a piggyback ride all the way to the cafeteria.

"Giddy up horsey. We're going to Neverland."

"If this is you high, I want to know what your like drunk," Chester says laughing. He looks down at the art I created on his arm. "Little Sparrow. Reminder to be happy."

On his arm was a little birdy, but not just any birdy. I drew a detailed Sparrow and the words he spoke out loud were written underneath.

"Come here sexy," I wave Chester over. When he comes over, I hop onto his back.

"You know. Your not much of a bad ass once I think about it," I say messing with Chester's hair.

"Heyyy, take that back. I'm very much a badass."

"Do you get chased by Batman?"

"No," he answers like he's asking a question.

"If Batman has never come after you, then you are not a real badass," I clarify. We finally get to the lunch table and Chester sets me down.

When I look to the left I see someone I never thought I'd ever meet.

"Oh. My. God. It's Zac Efron," I say feeling his face. He brings my hands away from his face.

"Are you high, Spencer," he asks me.

"That's my fault. I thought she would know it was pot, but she just gobbled the whole thing up," Alexandra says. I laugh.

"That's such a funny story. Man, I should be high all the time. Everything's so fucking colorful. Oh shit, I'm hungry."

"And that's the munchies," I hear Sky say.

"Ooo, we should go to Steak n Shake real quick," I suggest.

"Honestly, that's a great idea. I'm tired of this school lunch," Alexander says.

"Let's hurry up and go before things turn into the Green Inferno and Spencer starts eating people," Sky says. We all agree and go to the school parking lot.

"Spence, can ride with me," Zac Efron says and I see Chester give him a look. I can't really tell what it means, but Lily gives me the same one.

"Max! When did you get in here? Where's Zac," I ask him when he gets in the car.

"I guess that means the pot is wearing off," Max says with a smirk on his face.

"Your saying I just imagined him," I asked, pouting and he nods his head yes.

"Does that mean Adam Sandler isn't my teacher?"

"Not that I know of," he answers me, laughing. "Anyways, I wanted to ask you something."

"Shoot."

"Would you like to go on another date with me?"

"I'd love to," I answer him, smiling.

"Awesome."
