Broken Humerus

(Chester's POV)

"Chester," one of my teammates yell my name from across the field. He has three people on him.

I give him the signal to send the ball my way and I keep running. He sends it through the air and it's clear. I'm going to catch it. I'm wide open.

I catch it, but I'm tackled to the ground a couple of seconds later.

"Chester, come on now! You know you have to look at your whole surrounding. Don't get blind sighted," I hear coach yell at me.

The person on top of me gets up.

"Yeah. You heard coach. Step up your game, Chester." I get off the grass and I'm face to face with Max. He has this big grin on his face.

I calm myself down, knowing he's just trying to rile me up.

"Max, this is only practice. We have a game soon and we need every player," Daniel tells him.

"Alright, captain," Max mocks him. We get back in formation and resume practice.

This time, I catch the ball without Max tackling me and throw it to Parker for him to make the touchdown.

Alexander gives me a high five and on the way back in formation, Max purposely bumps into my shoulder.

"What's your problem," I ask him.

"Don't get all butt hurt, Chester. It's just practice," he says. I breathe out a sigh to calm myself.

I roll my eyes and get back in formation. Coach blows the whistle and the next play starts. Coach has us practice different plays for the game and in each one, Max finds a way to intercept me.

It's so frustrating! I know he doesn't like me, the feeling is mutual, but we're on the same team. He doesn't have to pretend to like me. Just don't play dirty. We can stay out of each other's way.

"Guys, take a water break," Daniel says and I head over to talk to coach.

"Coach, you need to talk to Max," I tell him. Parker stands next to me. He saw everything that happened. The dirty way Max is playing.

"What's the problem," coach asks. I look at him in disbelief.

"Coach, Max is targeting Chester on purpose. Sometimes Chester doesn't even have the ball and he still finds a way to target him," Parker defends me.

"I see no problem in Max sticking a man. That's what you have to do in a real game," he says.

"Then put Max on the same team as Chester. If this keeps going, Chester will get hurt," Parker tells him. Coach nods his head in understanding.

"Okay, I will. If that makes you feel better." Coach blows the whistle, ending water break and everyone gets back on the field.

"Max switch with Alexander," Coach yells from the bench. Max looks at me as he switches with Alexander.

The play starts. Maybe now I can actually focus on practice.

The other team has the ball and Parker sticks to him, but the player throws it back to one of his teammates. He's closest to me and I try to catch it before he does.

"I got it," I call out so none of my teammates try to go for the ball and we collide. That would be bad.

I never catch the ball because I'm pushed to the ground. A heavy weight holds me down and the force of the impact presses against my arm and snaps.

An animalistic sound comes out of me as I feel my arm break. All movement around me speeds up and I can see everyone coming over to me.

"Are you ok, Chester," one of my teammates nicknamed Billy asks.

"Obviously he's not. Get the hell off of him, Max," I hear Daniel yell. He yanks the weight off of me, but it doesn't stop the pain coming from my arm. I can see the bone poking out from the skin.

Coach kneels down next to me and tries to help me.

"Don't touch it," I yell on extinct when Coach tries to.

"I'm calling an ambulance," Parker says and pulls out his phone. I feel dizzy and I want to throw up.

"What the hell man," Daniel growls out and pushes Max. Max acts offended.

"I didn't mean to. It was an accident. I swear," he says.

"You broke my arm, you fucking asshole," I yell at him. His eyebrows pull downward and he tries to come closer to me to attack me again. Coach pushes him back, getting back up to his feet.

"Get the hell out of here, Max! I don't want to see you on this field ever again. You're off the team," Coach growls at him.

Max is shocked still. He looks around, trying to see if anyone will defend him. When no one says anything and just stares at him like a monster, he gets the message.

"Expect a phone call from my father," Max tells Coach in a threatening tone. He takes off his equipment and throws it to the ground. He walks off and no one follows him.

I can hear the sirens of the ambulance and I only feel the pain in my arm more.

"It's going to be alright, man," Alexander says. "I've broken a lot of bones."

"I'm calling your dad. Practice over everyone," Coach says. None of my teammates leave.

I see the paramedics start to rush over. Daniel kneels down by me.

"You want me to go with you in the ambulance? Everyone else wants to meet up at the hospital to make sure you're okay. Is that fine," he asks and I nod my head. I don't want to admit it, but hospitals freak me out.

"Should I call the girls," I hear Alexander ask Parker.

"No," I yell to him and he looks at me in confusion. "Don't tell them."

There's no need to make all of them worry for me, especially Spencer. I've already caused her so much pain. I don't need to worry her now that we're friends again.

Ugh. That word. Friends. It almost makes my arm ache more.
