Chapter 38 - She’s covered

The tiny figure, then wore a little straw hat and flew all over the field.

Upon seeing her grandparents or second uncle taking a break for a moment, she'd immediately deliver a cool cup of cool and spring sweet water to quench the summer heat.

It roused the envy of the people in the surrounding fields.

The fields were close and they were used to chatting and gossiping with each other when they were working in the field, so when someone got jealous, they would just shout, "Old Chap Liu, you're just inviting hatred by bringing your poppet here, she's too enviable! Bring your granddaughter to my house and just let her be my granddaughter!"

"You wish, you stinky basket! My granddaughter only recognizes me as her grandpa. If you want, you can take away the two boys at home!"

"Who wants your two boys! They're troublesome! Hmph! Nannan, give Grandpa a cup of water too!"

Who didn't bring water to the rice harvest? He just couldn't stand this Old Chap Liu's cockiness!

He also meant to tease the little girl. She was too adorable! How old was she? She knew how to love her hardworking parents and grandparents.

On the other side, the little child responded crisply, and ran like a bee, pouring water into a clean bamboo cup.

"Yo, you're really bringing water to Grandpa? Then Grandpa will also enjoy this round of filial piety from little Nannan, hahaha!" The old man, who yelled the loudest and laughed boisterously, took the cup of water and drank it all down.

He smacked his lips skeptically right after.

It was sweet and cool, and so refreshing. He felt invigorated at once and even the sun's scorching heat seemed to have dissipated considerably.

"Delicious! Come on, give me another one!"

There were villagers nearby who had drunk water from Liu's house. Upon hearing this, their cravings were immediately triggered. "The water at Old Brother Liu's house is really good. I drank it once, and when I drank water when I got home, I just couldn't find the taste. Nannan, give Uncle a cup, too!"

"Sure!" Liu Yusheng smiled sweetly.

Axiu followed behind her, carrying a water jug and cup. Wherever she went, he followed in that direction.

From beginning to end, there was a bright smile in his eyes.

Hence, an amusing scene appeared in the whole field. Two and a half children flew all over the field, giving cups of sweet water to those who were tired and thirsty.

It made Grandpa Liu so angry that he jumped upright.

These people, how could they order Nannan about?!

"That's enough, I say! You're exhausting my granddaughter. Give me some of your grains in compensation!"

"Okay, no problem! This year is another bumper harvest. We can afford a little grain!"

"Hahahahaha!"

The two buckets of water specially brought over by the Liu family were emptied in the blink of an eye.

But Liu Yusheng also helped herself to the long row of buckets placed at the edge of the field, not just the Liu's. When their buckets of water ran out, she went for a refill from others' buckets.

They drank and had fun together.

All the water handed out from Liu Yusheng's hands, no matter whose it was filled with, was just as sweet and thirst-quenching!

"Is this really my water? It's different from what it used to taste…"

"It's different, but not strange. Nannan is our village's blessed baby. Can the water from our blessed baby be the same?"

"Hey! You've got a point!"

Villagers laughed and Liu Yusheng, who heard them, pursed her lips and smirked secretly.

That quick wisp of smile crashed squarely in Axiu's eyes, who reached up to straighten her crooked straw hat. "Shengsheng, are you tired? Take a break for a while. If someone wants more water, let them fill it themselves. Shall we go to your brother's side to catch some loaches?"

The Liu brothers were playing crazy with a bunch of teeny-weeny children in a canal by the river, soaked and covered in mud, even their faces were smeared with dried mud.

They were obsessed with catching loaches.

"Okay!" Liu Yusheng nodded, her eyes sparkling.

Leading the toddler to the edge of the canal, a little farther away from the bunch of crazy kids, Axiu stepped barefoot into the water before carrying Liu Yusheng down carefully.

The soles of her feet felt soft and slippery mud in the water. Liu Yusheng mischievously dug up through her toes, and giggled when tickled.

"Brother Axiu, do you know how to catch loaches?"

"No." He never played.

"Then let my brothers and the others catch them and we'll play by ourselves!"

"Okay." He bowed to whatever she said.

Then he saw the toddler's eyes roll around and bow down to dig up a ball of mud and smeared his cheek.

"Hahahahaha!"

"...."

"Brother Axiu, I'm going to turn you into a little mud monkey, watch out!"

Little clumps of mud flew at him, and Axiu subconsciously ducked down. He didn't do much, but with a slight deflection, the mud flew behind him, hitting the boys playing madly behind him directly.

"Who! Who hit me with mud!"

"Ouch! Who is it? I can't see!"

"Ouch! Hey! Don't hit! Don't hit! I've got mud in my mouth, yuck!"

"Hahahahaha!" Hiding behind Axiu, the culprit held her belly and chortled.

The boys turned around, pissed off.

"Nannan, you attacked sneakily! Wait!" Playing in the mud, who wouldn't!

Seeing the children itching for a fight and beginning to dig up muds while their sister was still chuckling non-stop, Liu Zhixia and Liu Zhiqiu wiped their faces and flew towards the kids who were ready for the fight, knocking them directly into the ditch.

All right, everyone turned into mud monkeys.

The mud war Liu Yusheng started evolved into a team battle.

By the time they climbed ashore and were ready to go home, none of them could see their faces.

Except her.

She was totally covered!

Axiu straightened up as a human shield, greeting the mud that came over, all fell on him.

"Brother Axiu." The girl giggled.

Axiu's lips quirked up, "Naughty."

"Giggle!"

He washed the mud off his face, led the toddler, and walked slowly on the ridges.

The sun was still scorching, and the occasional breeze couldn't blow away the dry heat in the air.

The smell of the mud was also stinky.

The corner of Axiu's lips, however, was always filled with a faint light smile.

He liked such moments.

Where Shengsheng was.

There was laughter.

And a bunch of…little friends who could fight and won't turn around and stab you in the back.

It took seven full days to harvest the rice, dry it, and store it in the warehouse.

On this day, when the family was finally able to rest and relax, Liu Yusheng uncovered a large jar sealed with paper.

The grape fruit wine was brewed.

"Nannan, this-is it really brewed? Why is it so fast?"

"Don't we have to wait for a year?"

The family squeezed in the west wing, standing behind Liu Yusheng, and looking a little incredulous.

But the aroma of fruit wine in the air was telling them that it was true.

Liu Yusheng pursed her lips and chuckled: "Grandparents, parents, Second Uncle and Second Aunt, it's really brewed, ahh, I come in every day to see it. If you don't believe me, you guys taste it!"

The homemade wine was ready to drink after a month or so of fermentation. She had mixed spirit spring water into them, which not only enhanced the taste of the fruit wine, but also shortened the fermentation period.

The reason she waited for a year when she made the wine for the first time was just to be able to find a good time to bring up the idea of making fruit wine.

"Dalin, go get a spoon and a bowl, let's all taste it!" Grandpa Liu commanded, both his hands were sweating with nervousness.
