Chapter Three
Abraham's POV
Looking over at Bryan, I sit up and groan tiredly. Sleeping on a hospital couch is really uncomfortable. I lean closer to observe him better. There are several tubes connected to him . I sigh sadly. It has been three restless weeks now since the "incident" at the lab. When I realized the bleeding was not stopping, I quickly called for an ambulance and we were brought here to the nearest hospital. He has been unconscious since then. I blame myself fully for everything that happened. I never should have let Bryan near my work. What was I thinking, my job is too dangerous. I don't know what I'll do if I lose him too. I rub my face . I can't even think of that possibility right now. The doctor and I did all we could to stabilize him. As for Perry, he was last seen quickly escaping from the lab, holding my assistant Rob captive. The security guards tried to stop him by shooting at him but from what they say, he dodged all the bullets so inhumanely fast. "Abe, you need to see this now", Bryan's doctor's voice suddenly breaks me from my thoughts. I look at Bryan one last time and stand up reluctantly to follow him into his office. I don't want to leave my son alone. Once I'm get in , he dims the room lighting and places some X-ray diagrams on the light board. " the scan we did on your son when you brought him in three weeks ago shows a lot of fractured and broken limbs. You for one are lucky to have escaped with just an arm sling. But we have a new development here. Surprisingly, all the broken bones we scanned seems to have reconnected and healed. This is amazing Abe. Do you have any idea what could have led to this??" . I shake my head. The fewer people who know, the safer. Amazing, but could it be? I think to myself. "What about his vitals. How's his heart rate now?" , I ask hopefully. "Vitals are self-healing too. His heart though is another matter, it's beating so fast, 500 beats per minute. I'm very surprised he has not woken up yet" I nod gratefully. The serum is actually saving him. "Thanks J, I really appreciate all you're doing for my son" He smiles warmly at me and waves me off. He continues, "listen Abe, you have gone through a lot your whole life. I have known you for a long time and I know you are not a quitter. Have some hope, Bryan will be okay soon . I promise to do all I can . Now you need to eat something. You look so skinny" "What the!" , I retaliate. He puts his hands up in mock surrender, "Okay okay , skinnier than usual. On a more important note, you really have to eat and take a good rest. I will take care of your son, do not worry. For now just go take care of yourself. Bryan needs you too and you will be of no use to him if you die of hunger or sleep deprivation"
I think about what he said and nod. My stomach growls at that moment. Traitor. Opening the door, I turn to him, "Okay, take care of him. I will just be gone for a few minutes" .He nods, "See you later Abe, I will call you if anything comes up" " I'd appreciate that" I say stepping out.
The day goes by slowly for me, painfully slow. I just had my son back and now I am afraid I might lose him. I have barely slept enough for the past nights. I must look like a zombie now. I really hope the serum is really working. After eating , Doctor J advised me for the 100th to go out for a walk for a bit of air. I decide to do so today. I take a walk to a nearby park . There are a lot of people around here, smiling and laughing. Some are enjoying picnics. I sit on one of the metallic benches and try to relax. Looking around the park, I spot two kids playing in the sand. Both are boys. They look so young and cute. A beautiful young woman sits on the grass very close . I assume she is their mother. I stare at the scene for a few minutes. I don't even realize that I'm wiping tears from my eyes. All my life, I have put work first. I lost the woman I loved. I have always wanted a family like this. Happy, Warm. I missed all my son's childhood moments , his first steps, his first word, pretty much all his first. I wonder if he has a girlfriend. I chuckle at the thought of that . He is my son , of course he ought to.
I look up to the afternoon sky, it is getting darker. Rain clouds are forming . I guess I have to get back now . Looks like everyone has the same thought. I run half the way to the hospital. When I reach the hospital's main gates, my phone starts vibrating. I immediately take it out of my jeans pockets and press the answer button. "Hello, you are speaking to Abraham ..." "Abe, please come back right away. You will really want to see this" , Doctor J says from the other end.
