It was drizzling.
Nothing new for the maritime conditions Aster had shifted to . Thirteen years of her life and she had stayed in 6 different cities.
The seventh addition to the list was dramatically different from its predecessors, not only in climate but also in lifestyle.
She acclimatized herself to the new climate in the most facile manner one could imagine.
But the stumbling stone was the lifestyle . Lack of respect , smug attitude, interference in people's personal space were few of the qualities here which served the daily dose of her agitation.
"Aster, what was your percentage in the previous school? " Jade's hesitant tone brought her back to the conversation, which she had lately decided to sail through unattentively.
"Oh, 97.4%. What about you? " Aster replied, with a face reflecting fake humbleness.
"Oh, I see." Jade said with an expression which Aster wildly guessed as disconcertment.
The short break was over and Aster felt hung at a climax scene as Jade walked away to his seat. He hadn't answered.
She was suspicious.
In the past two weeks in this school, her percentage brought out a monotonous reaction.
"Oh my!! Scholarrrr!! "
But Jade seemed to be 'personally' intimidated.
Aster turned towards Mirtie, her eyes still tracing Jade.
"Mirtie, how is Jade in studies?" she spoke, a little too fast.
Mirtie kept her bottle aside ,gulped, wiped her face and turned completely towards Aster.
Meanwhile, Jade had settled beside Andrew.
An irittated Aster rose her eyebrows at Mirtie, demanding some speed in her tedious routines.
"Well , briefly speaking, he is the topper .
And if you want me to elaborate then promise you would play games with our group during the lunch ",Mirtie spoke , finally .
Aster's fiercely competitive self was unfolding .
"Ya, whatever -- go ahead ", she blurted.
Mirtie leisurely formed a smirk , but got to the main point not wanting to enrage her new irascible friend.
"So in the first term he scored 94%, and he is the monitor.
Mainly his competion is Andrew, his so-called best friend. They both together can score enough for this entire class to pass" she concluded with a giggle.
Aster was processing the data, calculating the intensity of competition and estimating the requisite efforts.
She didnt realise she was biting her lower lip since a long time , with a twinkle in her eye. She almost looked immersed in a daydream.
Something finally brought her out of her computations.
"I like someone else, Vince " a shrieky little voice filled the air.
Aster could sense some guilt in the small voice.
"The drawl was so soft, it should have been inaudible in the usual abuzz..." Aster thought and looked away from the window and towards the source of the sound.
No doubt, she heard the voice, because there was not a single other soul speaking, apart from the crimson red Mahi.
Everyone was gathered around Vince, who was awkwardly on his knees with a rose dangling in his hand.
Mahi stood flabbergasted in front of him with guilt etched on her face, which Aster had guessed anyway by her voice .
Aster thought everyone had freezed in their tracks.
Vince was an even darker shade of crimson than Mahi , if that was possible .
Karl stood with a small pout, looking alternatively at Mahi and Vince.
Velda had a 'told you ' expression plastered on her face.
Nicole seemed to be comprehending the damage caused.
Arnold was trying his best to peep , with his small height.
The others were mainly learning the scene by heart - it had a month's gossip material, of course.
Aster fought the urge to facepalm at this over-the-top drama in front of her.
She stood up and walked head straight towards the rose-holding hand of Vince. Once she reached the spot light , as these dramatic 'friends' of hers would call it , she spoke.
"I have to complete the board work. Please excuse me ". Without waiting for an answer she strode and slightly dodged Vince's still stretched hand which was blocking her path.
While updating the subject on the board she felt altleast 7 eye-rolls at her back.
Successfully she had blooper-ed the show, not that she intended to , but won't regret it as well. The crowd scattered away taking a final glance at Vince who had finally got up.
"Girl, that was rude" a disembodied voice came to Aster. She turned back swiftly.
"Hey Jolie, I didn't get it ,what are you talking about? ", she said.
"This thing you did, you spoiled their moment, Vince and Mahi's ." The dimpled girl said with pity spluttering from her tone.
"Huh" Aster huffed.
"As if that was a MOMENT. He was just embarrassing himself and Mahi. Talented, I would say he is. Two targets with the same arrow", Aster completed with a disdainful smirk.
"If you were in his situation , you would know what rejection from your loved one feels like ,"Jolie spoke. She was given a slight elbow nudge by her bestie, Maggie , but that didn't prevent her from giving Aster a penetrating glare.
Aster held back a scoff and spoke with a coldness embraced tone, "And why do you think I would ever be in his situation ?"
Reaching the last word her coldness faltered into slight trepidation. The mere thought of being THAT vulnerable left Aster's shielded self shudder.
"I have neither the time nor the will for this ludicrousness. " she almost yelped the words at the retreating back of Jolie, who was being dragged away by Maggie.
Though Jolie didn't need to hear that declaration.
This desperate yelp of Aster was rather a reassuring statement to pacify herself.
She would never be there , Aster affirmed in her mind , giving a last glance at the very spot where Vince had just got his hopes shattered, NEVER.
