Seventh entry

Well, some interesting news came from the north. The anti-bandit operation was mostly successful. Merchants used the largest convoy ever put together on this island as a big trap for them. Instead of merchandise planned for Metzaca they put mercenaries inside their wagons with several companies of the colonial army in reserve. Sadly, I am not sure about the exact details of the operation, but I do know most gangs fell for the trap. Guessing they were tricked into believing that this was worth the risk.

I do say most gangs fell for it because one gang had an even better idea. While everyone was focused on the convoy, a well known gang by the name of White Ravens stole bottles of valuable snow wine under the garrison's noses and disappeared into the night. I am sure everyone's jaws fell on the floor when they found out turning this from a great triumph into a joke. I watched them when they returned to Metzaca and no one held their head high. That's how embarrassed they were due to the so-called „White Bottle robbery". Gotta admit, even I couldn't hold my laugh. At least the roads will be safer for now.

I did hear some interesting stuff about Cass while she was away. My sister is the one who mostly talks to her since she works in the company now so most of what I heard didn't come directly from her and so some of it might be wrong. I was correct when she was unnaturally calm back in Sur Carys. It turns out she, along with several children, was kidnapped 9 or 10 years ago. Kidnappers came from the mainland and thought they could earn some easy money by taking children of merchants and nobles as hostages. But before any payouts were earned, they were either caught or killed.

From what I hear, even the local criminals searched for the kidnapped children. Guessing either the reward money was great or everyone hated this move and wanted the kidnappers dead. Anyway, all the children were rescued safe and sound. There is a rumour that one of them tried to escape and managed to somehow kill one of the kidnappers. That's something I will have to ask her someday. Right now it's a bad time since she has been focused too much on her business lately.

Which reminds me that I was confused on why she followed the army. As the only member of the Korvin family still alive in the colony she is the sole inheritor of the Korvin Trade Company. I asked her friend Lily Holmes, the same one who is taking care of us while Cass is away, about this and she gave me three reasons for leaving the company in her hands.

The first one is she received extra income by assisting the army's quartermaster with the organization. The second reason is she never left the area around Metzaca before so she wanted to explore the island and would be quite safe with the army. And the last reason is she saw the potential opportunities that the colonial army brought with it's successes. Considering she had managed to buy a large swat of land in Fryngid for a low price I can see the reasoning behind it.

After her recent return, she said she has another great potential investment in mind so she wants us all to come with her on a trip. We were initially confused as to why me and Ferlin were coming along too, but she told us we would pass next to the fort of Thaknur. The same fort where our parents' grave was located. Our parents weren't too attached to Sur Carys so it wasn't important to them on where would they be buried. I am glad she thinks of us and, to be honest, it will be hard for us to see the graves for the first time. At least I still have my siblings and we can look for each other.

It still feels horrible remembering they are no longer with us. I hope they have their peace wherever they ended up.
