Have you ever yearned for something?
Perhaps your beating heart ached for the heart of another, very commonly romanticised, though despite its simplicity can be the most wonderful thing, better than the magic that glows in our fingertips. The warmth it creates in your heart is simply marvellous, however, we must think bigger! Like revolutionising the world with your brilliant ideas of morality or science or overthrowing the monarchy to institutionalise a dictatorship in your name, changing the world as a pioneer of history, forever remembered as a figure that shaped the land they stand on.
It may be time to reel in the ideas of power, that could be dangerous.
Maybe you've yearned for that job title, rising through the ranks to achieve your goal, batting down the competition whilst gaining status and popularity along the way. Or even earning the respect from your peers, to finally be noticed for who you are and what you've become...
Now let me ask you another question:
Who are you really?
How does one describe themselves without peering in to their own brains and forcefully yanking out the information? Don't get me started as to how you even know, yourself.
Do you answer this ambiguous question with your name? "Hello, my name is so and so - that's who I am!", but the predicament with that answer is that it depends on what you associate with that name, what is your personality? What have you done in your life? WHATS YOUR STAR SIGN, MOON AND RISING SIGN, I WANT A COMPLETE ZODIAC CHART! So, no information there.
You could also answer with "What's it to you?", which raises way more questions about yourself and is absolutely ridiculous, why try so hard to be unnecessarily annoying to deal with. What information do you get from that? Just answer the question instead of wasting my time or I'll give you a judgemental stare until you cave and give me a proper answer.
I swear, if you think you're funny enough to answer "I'm me." I will, without hesitation, smack you in the mouth.
So, a very difficult question, right?
Let me refer back to the first question. What I've yearned for my entire life is the answer to question two. I've scoured the rocky earth of Elemxista going on many threatening journeys and monster slaying quests thinking I already knew the answer, when I was just content with a piece of myself.
In the end, I did find the answer.
And the answer is:
[REDACTED]
- Solis Incognita, XX25
At first there was a vacuum, nothing but the cold and desolate 'space' with little trinkets of light scattered across the vast empty. It was desolate and silent.
Then the stars exploded, with such burning ferocity it lit up the unilluminated for the briefest of moments. scattering themselves across the 'space', leaving behind what we now call 'Star Remnants'. The small and frail 'Star Remnants', found themselves lost and afraid without the rest of their pieces, and begun searching for themselves in the night, wading through the quiet with the determination to put themselves back together.
One by one, the pieces found each other, rushing to the other and enveloping them in a warm embrace, never to let go again in fear of the ever-expanding black. Eventually more and more began to wrap around this ever-growing mound of remnants, all with the same intentions to never let go, to never be alone without themselves. What each star piece didn't realise was that they each individually represented something called an 'element'. Some are more similar to others, they may even be almost identical but none of them were ever the same as another.
But conflict arose, their differences caused feuds in spite of how close they were. An example of two elements that despise each other would be the hot-headed 'Fire', and the cool, collected 'Water'. Fire wants water to stop decreasing their flames, and water wants fire stop evaporating its body.
These contradicting personalities between the elements resulted in dangerous opposition. Pushing each other away due to their dislike had formed physical rifts, leaving behind indents and scars from the strain of their stubbornness which only grew as they expanded and formed landscapes.
There is however a good ending to the stories of the stars, learning that despite their animosity to one another, they cannot live without the other. Much as though the Fire boils the water, Water acknowledged that their body is purified and is returned to them as rain, cleaner than ever before, and as much as Water extinguishes the Fire, it is done with the sole purpose of ensuring that their unintentional destructive abilities are curbed to ensure that they cannot harm those they care for.
This newfound co-existence had formed the new world: Elemxista, the building block of nations. With lands separated by the seas, the whole earth basking in the warm touch of magic - the gift from the Star Remnants. Every creature possesses the ability to use magic naturally through the thousands of years of adaptation from the influences it has had on the body, creating new veins and arteries that lead to and from what is known as the Pool. Think of it as the fuel source of magical ability, needing to be replenished after use. This is done through the bodies natural production through a gland named the Ceres gland, and like everything else in the body, produces more the healthier you are.
Raw magical power became the definition of strength, with species that were instinctively better at magic climbing the food chain. The strongest blast of fire or shaking of the earth would come out victorious.
Until one day, one ancient species had discovered how to mould their magic after it was released from their body, something that was a possibility since the start of the world, yet never considered until that very moment.
That species rose to become one of thought.
You see, it's extremely important to know how this world came to be and has developed to how it is today. Because the world's greatest boon had caused the suffering of many lives in the name of warfare.
In a way, this seemed inevitable. Creatures seem to thrive off of combat, the instinctual urge to dominate that has prevented extinction of countless flora and fauna. Is it really so surprising that they use their brains alongside magic to slaughter?
And so it has been, for hundreds and thousands of years. Until one day, where magic had failed, and the power of thought began to overtake the strength of callous competition.
Empathy had developed, people had enough and wanted change.
Peace reigned over kingdoms worldwide.
For now.
