First day of school

It has been a week since I had the meeting with the headmistress. I moved into my new dormitory and started taking special class with Mr. Barker to catch up to the other students in the school. It was from Mr. Barker that I found why the school was so huge.

Even though half the human population in this world had extraordinary abilities most of them spent their time in other planets maintaining the peace between the planets. Only a fraction of all the powered people in this planet stayed here to fight against other powered who had turned bad and harmed the non-powered citizens. This school served as one of the headquarters for those powered heroes.

Currently I was walking on an unnecessarily large road that led to the even larger auditorium where the orientation was scheduled to take place. I was just a single boy in the sea of students walking down the path to attend the orientation. Boys and girls, tall and short with varying features walked this path.

Many walked in groups having already made friends. Me? I walked alone trying hard not attract much attention. I don't remember ever attend any school, but if I had attended a school before I lost my memories, I knew which kind student I would have been. The loner kind, with no friends, just sitting alone all day.

I had reached the auditorium entrance now. I showed my ID card, that displayed my position as a student of this school, to the security guard standing there. He let me enter. Entering the stadium, I walked to the stairs that would take me to the seats. I sat on one of the fifth row seats. The auditorium was larger than I had thought it would be.

It had a large stage at the center as well several hundred seats to accommodate several hundred students from varying parts of this world. The students were spilling in, taking their seats. Everyone murmuring to each other made a sound like a bee would, though several times more louder.

"Hi", someone greeted me pulling me out of my thoughts. A boy with black hair and dark eyes was standing in front of me, wearing rectangular spectacles.

"Hi", I greeted him back with a slight smile, just to be polite. "Can I sit with you", he asked me next. So much for being a loner. "No problem", I said to him still with the smile, just being polite. 'Its not polite its a little creepy. Your smile', that's our little idiot there.

"So...uh....what's your name?", the spectacle boy asked me now. "Ethan", I told him," what's your name?", I asked him back. " Richard. Richard brown", he replied politely in his girly voice.

The students had settled down in their seats now and was almost eagerly waiting for the orientation and then the classes. The faculty came on to the stage among them the headmistress, Jennifer Sandy.

While the other faculty members stayed behind, the headmistress walked towards the single microphone kept on stage. "Good morning students of RAY academy", she spoke, her voice reaching every single corner of the giant auditorium, "We welcome all of you to another year of learning...…", she went on.

Through her speech, she explained that the normal classes like history and Math will be conducted in the morning and the lesson on 'how to become a hero' will be taking place at evenings. She said that there will be no classes on weekends and we are allowed to go outside school premises only on these weekends.

She mentioned that fighting, powered or non-powered, without the permission and the supervision of a teacher is not allowed and bunch of other rules. All in all, it was basically what I thought a normal orientation in a normal school looked like without taking in consideration the superpower part.

She ended her speech and the students were dispersed from the auditorium so as to attend their classes. Walking down the stairs, I found a woman handing everyone a map of the gigantic school campus and their class schedule. I took one of each and continued towards the exit, Richard right behind me.

This school accommodated students for two years. The students who had already completed one year here, went right from the exit of the auditorium, were as the newbies like me went left.

In this school the students were given a permanent class and the teachers were supposed to come into the class to teach. According to the map, my class was a single floored building by the northeastern side of the campus . I followed a dozen student who took the path towards that building.

Most students walked in groups of four or five . The pattern only disturbed by a group of students walking the same path as me. Almost all students walking to the same first year classroom as me were huddled around someone. I couldn't see who it was because of the other students crowding them.

"That's Olivia Jones, daughter of Benjamin Jones and Emma Jones", Richard said from my side. "What!!!!???? She is the daughter of Valor and shift-spy. You are joking right? she is not in our school, far from our class", I was in shock.

Valor was considered as the strongest hero alive. Though super-strength was one of the most common powers, he had taken his powers to a whole other level. He could lift a whole planet with no problem.

As for shift-spy, she is the best spy ever. She could change her physical features. She could look like anyone and be anything. Now their daughter was in our school, more precisely my class. I would have run over to her and introduced myself if I hadn't seen her make another student carry her bag.

I hated people who thought they were above others. This girl was the perfect example of that, she was making a student carry her bag while she walked like she owned the whole place. The boys and girls around her were looking at her like she was some kind of queen. Only people not huddled around her were Richard, me and a girl walking a few feet behind us.

The girl had short black hair and brown eyes. I saw her staring at us or to say more precisely, me. When I smiled at her, she just blushed and stared at her feet. Thinking I had made her uncomfortable I focused my attention on the building that was starting to appear behind the trees that covered this part of the school.

The building was painted a light cream color and was larger than what a dozen students and a teacher would need. The students all around came to a stop in front of it. A man in a blue suit stood in front of us.

"Good morning. My name is Robert Miller and I am your science teacher. That will be biology, chemistry and physics", the man was saying to us, before he walked into the building. The rest of the class followed, Olivia in the lead.

The class looked like any other normal classroom. A interactive-board mounted on the wall behind the teacher's desk. A dozen students desk kept facing them. Olivia took a seat at the back while her 'followers' fought between themselves to have seats close to her.

As Olivia and most of the other students sat at the back side of the class I had to pick a seat at the front. Richard sat by my right and turning back I saw the shy girl from before sit behind me and just like before she blushed and stared at her feet.

Mr. Miller had started his class. He started teaching us a lesson in chemistry today. As I was behind in my education I couldn't understand much though I paid my utmost attention. I could hear voices from behind, probably Olivia and 'followers' having a chat in the middle of their class.

We had History and then English that day. The teachers came and taught us and before long the lunch break had come. The whole class stood as one and walked out of the class. There were two cafeteria, one for second year students and one for first year students. Our cafeteria was at the south side of the campus, a fifteen minutes walk from our class.

I took a seat by the corner of the cafeteria with Richard. Olivia and group sat at the center of the cafeteria, now students from other classes had joined them. They caused quite a lot of noise while our table looked like a funeral. Both of us not being much of a socializers ate our lunch in silence.

The lunch went by without much incidents and the next class being 'hero' lessons, everyone ate their share of food fast. The cafeteria slowly emptied out. I, being a slow eater, was one of the last to leave. Richard had waited for me outside, so together we left for the class.

Our class was close to the cafeteria so it was not long before we reached the building that was supposed to host our powered lessons. It was a single floored rectangular building about five times the size of our classroom.

Everyone else had already reached, so when we entered, all attention were on us. Not liking the spotlight I quickened my pace and went to stand at the back of the class. The shy girl with Black hair was there, I gave her a little smile and again she blushed and looked away.

"Good afternoon, students. My name is Cristopher Blackstein and I will be teaching you more about your powers", A man in gym clothes was saying from the front of the class, "through this you may even find new capabilities of your power".

"What is your power, sir?", someone asked him, cutting him off. He looked at the boy who had asked him the question, smiled and looked back at the class. "I am non-powered".

That sentence started a discussion between the students. They looked at each other in utter confusion 'powered classes with a teacher without power'. While the teacher in gym clothes kept smiling, his hand tied behind his back.

"Don't worry about me not having powers. The thing is you won't need your powers to complete todays powered class either", He said to us with his face full of barely concealed mirth. His words sent another wave of murmur through out the class.

The worst part was that what he said was true. All we did today was bunch of exercises that accumulated a lot of sweat and didn't require our powers. Having lived in the streets by myself, I was fit enough to go through the work out without much trouble but some like Richard were half dead when Mr. Blackstein finally dispersed

The thing was that I was hoping to finally understand my powers or maybe even learn to control it through this classes but this exercises won't be much help in that. Before leaving, Mr. Blackstein said that all powered classes for a few weeks will be work out sessions like this. He explained that this was to get all the students fit because sometimes we may have to fight without our powers.

I would have expected Olivia to be bad at this, After all had she lived her life in complete luxury and would have had a bunch of bodyguards to look after her. The truth is that she is better than me at this, she went through this exercises like a robot with complete perfection.

The class ended, everyone left for their dormitory in silence. Tired and hungry, looking forward to relaxing tonight. But that won't be happening for me as I had my tutoring session with Mr. Barker. Explaining this to Richard, I set a path, different from my classmates towards my tutoring class at the northern part of gigantic school campus.

This school was challenging me mentally and physically. Pretty much average at everything without my powers it was hard for me. Though I won't be giving up, I will work harder than anyone else, especially Olivia and come out at the top by the end of my school life.
