Chapter 18: The Danger of the Moment Between Life and Death

Ji Younai discovered that the nurse was lying.

The walls of the treatment room that she had been using were being repainted?

However, she did not smell any odor of paint when she passed by the treatment room just now.

The more Ji Younai thought about it, the more strange it seemed. She looked at the back view of the nurse who was walking in front.

The more she looked, the more familiar she found the nurse to be. She felt like she had seen her somewhere before.

It was just a change of dressing and a body checkup. Why did she take her to such a terrifying place?

Ji Younai dared not ask about it, for fear that she would alarm the nurse.

Her heart was beating like a drum.

"Um… I'd like to use the bathroom, may I?"

"Yes," the female nurse replied coldly. She led Ji Younai to the ladies' restroom after making a few turns.

Ji Younai was hiding in the ladies' restroom, and she peeked through the crack to see that the female nurse was guarding the door.

She was wearing a mask, and her eyes were suddenly filled with ferocity.

There were no windows in the basement, and it was a completely enclosed space.

An intense, ominous hunch gave Ji Younai the chills.

She squatted in the ladies' restroom for a long time, not daring to go out.

The female nurse who was wearing a mask seemed to have discovered that something was amiss. She entered and slammed the door shut with a loud bang.

"Hurry and get out! It's time to change your dressing!"

Ji Younai fell silent in shock.

The nurse outside began slamming the door forcefully.

"Come out!"

"I'm not coming out! Who are you?! Why did you bring me here?!"

There was no answer, and the banging of the door of the restroom suddenly stopped.

Just as Ji Younai breathed a sigh of relief, the sounds of violent smashing abruptly resounded again outside the door.

"Get out!"

Ji Younai was so frightened that she felt as if her heart had jumped out of her chest. She leaped onto the toilet bowl and stepped on the toilet seat cover before trying hard to climb over to the adjacent cubicle.

Her left hand was a little weak because of the wound that hadn't healed completely.

When she saw the female nurse smashing the door with the rubbish bin, Ji Younai panicked and kicked open the door, and dashed out of the washroom.

"Help!"

"Help!"

The nurse chased after her from behind after discovering that she had fled.

There wasn't a single doctor in the dark basement at all, even though it was the area of the crisis stabilization ward. She was the only one yelling and crying for help.

Ji Younai realized that the place was like a maze.

Under the chilly, white light from the incandescent lamp, the ambiance of the quiet corridor felt rather strange.

The cold and creepy voice of a male stranger resounded out of nowhere.

"Who are you? Are you a nurse? Why are you wandering and loitering around here?"

"I'm a new nurse who got transferred here. A patient went missing, and I'm looking for her."

Ji Younai crouched by a room at the corner at the end of a corridor, covering her mouth and listening fearfully to the conversation that was taking place somewhere.

It was the nurse who had been chasing her!

"Oh, do you need help? The patients here are not easy to deal with."

"No, thank you."

The petrified Ji Younai listened to the sound of the footsteps that were getting closer to her.

However, at this moment, she discovered that the doors of one of the wards seemed to be unlocked, as the padlock was hanging loosely from it.

She removed the padlock mindlessly and opened the door to enter.

The cold white light in the room was flickering and switching on and off. Ignoring her fear and the potential kinds of dangerous patients that were possibly living in that ward, Ji Younai suddenly ducked below the bed.

In her opinion, the nurse was far more terrifying than lunatics!

She was hiding below the bed with bated breath. After staring at the metal door that was left ajar, for a long while, she realized that no one came and was secretly relieved. However, a few moments later, she felt a chill down her spine because she felt that someone was staring at her from behind.

She turned around casually...

A pair of scarlet, furtive, and unwelcoming eyes suddenly came into view. They were right in front of her!

Ji Younai was so frightened that her heart stopped beating. She instinctively shrieked!

However, at the next second, her mouth was covered tightly by the owner of the scarlet eyes.

"Keep quiet! Someone's coming," said the person who had a hoarse voice.

Ji Younai could not make a single sound, but she could hear that someone was approaching!

However, before she could react, she felt the lights turning dim, and someone yanked a handful of her hair violently, pulling her out from under the bed from behind.

"Trying to hide? Where are you going to hide?"

The mask that the female nurse was wearing was removed when Ji Younai was struggling. She finally saw the face of the nurse.

She was Wu Defang!

Her aunt's childhood friend and best friend!

Her primary care doctor!

Her heart was filled with massive fear.

Ji Younai saw Wu Defang pulling out a stun baton.

It wasn't a stun baton, it was a long bat!

It was even more powerful!

Buzz!

Ji Younai, who was struck by the stun baton couldn't stop trembling and spasming all over.

She lost the ability to resist and was dragged away while being in a daze.

Before losing consciousness, she saw the pair of scarlet eyes again. He was looking at her expressionlessly.

When Ji Younai woke up again, she found herself immobilized, strapped to an electroshock therapy chair. She could barely open her eyes as the harsh sunlight shone directly into her eyeballs.

Ji Younai recognized the place. It was the electroshock therapy room of the asylum.

She was subjected to excruciating pain, as though her body was on fire, and she couldn't stop convulsing.

She saw Wu Defang's menacing sneer.

"You've come to your senses?"

"It's good that you are. Now you can get a taste of the equipment in the electroshock room of the crisis stabilization ward."

After saying that, Ji Younai shuddered as Wu Defang pressed the button of the electroshock therapy device to switch it on. Next, a steady stream of electricity began to be generated through the wires attached to her body.

The excruciating pain of the electricity flowing into her body caused Ji Younai to scream in agony. Her muscles contracted, and her face turned as pale as a sheet.

She began to experience dizziness and nausea, tachycardia, and persistent convulsions.

"What grudge do you bear against me… why are you doing this to me?"

"Ji Younai!"

"You made me lose my job! Just like your aunt said, you're a jinx. It's better for everyone if you die."

"I'm going to electrocute you until you die! I'm going to electrocute you until you die!"

Ji Younai finally understood.

Wu Defang went through all that hassle to get her here in the extremely dangerous crisis stabilization area, so as to cover her tracks.

Wu Defang and her aunt wanted her dead!

They wanted her to die in the asylum without knowing why.

She was in so much pain that she did not even have the energy to call for help.

Ji Younai watched as Wu Defang set the electric joule to the maximum.

She knew that if Wu Defang pressed the activation button, she would die for sure!

The extremely strong current would stop her heart from beating.

She stared hopelessly as Wu Defang placed her fingertip on the button, all ready to press it!

Her death would be decided in a moment. She was at a moment of crisis.

Through her teary eyes, Ji Younai saw a figure emerge from behind Wu Defang's back.

He raised the red fire extinguisher and smashed it against the back of Wu Defang's head ruthlessly!

It's the patient in the crisis stabilization ward with the dark red pupils!

Wu Defang fell to the ground like a dead fish after being knocked unconscious.

Ji Younai's forehead was covered with cold sweat, and she was trembling slightly. She could feel that someone was releasing her.

Ji Younai, who had just suffered a strong electric shock, was now dizzy, and there seemed to be countless heavy shadows in front of her.

She could not stand up at all!

In a moment, Ji Younai saw the man who had saved her life pick up a syringe in a bid to give her an injection.

"What did you... inject in me?"

"An alleviating agent. They give me this after getting electrocuted. It would feel better..."

His husky, cold, youthful voice was crisp and melancholic.

Due to the fact that it was an intravenous syringe, the alleviating agent took effect quickly.

Ji Younai eased up, but the intense nausea was still present. She walked on an unsteady gait, taking wobbly steps.

She got a clear look at the face of her savior.

It was a boy who was about her age!

He looked rather disheveled as his messy hair covered his scarlet eyes. The years of not seeing light resulted in his unusually pale skin. His features were handsome, but he looked sickly and he exuded an air of mysterious melancholy.
