The age of the Roaring Twenties is marred by the outcome of the Civil War. The victory of the South marked the beginning of a new political regime: slavery is thriving, and the judge needs but one thing-the 'Slave Theory'-in order to deprive an innocent man of all rights of property, and to condemn him to penal servitude.
Steven Keyle, a disgraced abolitionist and convicted criminal, finds himself in the very heart of a vast political conspiracy, while trying to unravel the dark mystery surrounding his owner.
Very good! I’ve read the Russian version of the same book, and, as far as I see, the translation is even better. A nicely done historical exploration featuring the elements of romance, psychology, and even horror. Loved it! I would also like to mention that the writing style is exquisite and unique — it’s clear that the author was inspired by classic Russian literature. Can’t wait to read what will happen to John later in the book.
