After last night, we went back to the room and Lydia was already asleep. I felt drained so I went straight to the bed and fell asleep right there with all of my clothes on. I thought it was a few seconds later when I opened my eyes but instead, there was sunlight hitting my face. I rubbed my eyes and looked over at Lydia who was sound asleep. I turned my head to see Trevor sitting on the edge of the bed and putting on his shoes. I sat up and as soon as I did, the pounding started again but less intense. I grabbed my head for a few seconds, trying to rub the pain away. I gave up and looked back at Trevor and stood up to walk over to him. I slowly walked over to him and he met me halfway.
"How do you feel?" He asked, looking down at my dark eyes.
"I would be lying if I said that I was fine," I said, laughing a little. He put his hands on my waist and closed the distance between our bodies. I put my hands on his arms and rubbed them up and down, taking a deep breath.
"Ready for today?" He asked. Today was the day we went to the L-13's. The day we join a group to change our lives. To make them better.
"Is it Ok if I say I'm a little terrified," I responded. He gave a small smile.
"Change is always scary," He said. He was right but that's not what I was scared of. I was scared of what they would do with us. Trevor and I. We have the most dangerous side-effects, so would they use that to their gain? Or would they help us control them?
"Should we wake Lydia up?" I asked. He took a deep breath and looked over at her.
"Let's let her sleep. This was the first night that she has slept at a normal time," He said. As the minutes passed by, I felt myself regain strength. The pounding dissipated and it eventually went away. Would I get that everytime I use my side-effects or was that just a one time thing.
"I want to test something real quick. Bring the bags, we can eat outside," I said, walking over to the door and leaving it open so Trevor could walk out after me. I heard the door shut and I hopped into the back of the truck. He hopped in right behind me. We sat there, talking about how we could trigger his IP side-effect. We eventually finished the bowl of fruit we both had.
"What did you want to show me?" He asked. I gave him a small smile before looking down at the bowl in front of me. I focused my eyes on the bowl, imagining that it was connected with my finger with a rope and would follow it's movements. I lifted my finger and the bowl slowly went into the air and I moved it through the air and landed it in Trevor's lap. I couldn't help but smile. The same energy was inside of me and I didn't have a headache. Trevor smiled back at me.
"Maybe save your side-effects for an area where you can try and control them or in a life or death situation," He said. I stared at him for a moment. He's right, I should wait until I can actually train with my side-effects before playing around with them.
"Can you control it?" I asked. He looked up at me. He nodded. I searched his face before asking my next question.
"Then why were you so scared to tell me?" I asked. He looked away from me for a moment.
"Didn't know what it was. Or how you would feel if I told you that I had side-effects that were unheard of," He said. I looked at him. I waited a moment before jumping out of the back and asking, "Show me."
He laughed and looked at me for a second before hopping out and standing a few feet away. He motioned his hand like he was pulling a rope that was around my waist and it led me to him. He put a hand on the small of my back while he looked at my eyes.
"No more secrets," He said. I looked down at his lips and felt his hand on my back, my heart racing at what he just did so perfectly.
"No more secrets," I repeated back. He looked down at my lips and back up to my eyes. I gave a small smile before escaping his grip and walking back into the room where Lydia was sleeping, and I whispered, "Not that easy Trevor," knowing he could hear me from the truck. I heard him laugh before walking back to the door and into the room, carrying the plastic bowls in his hands and throwing them away in the trash can.
I walked over to the bed where Lydia was sleeping and shook her gently, trying to wake her up. She kicked and almost punched me before opening her eyes and staring at me, trying to burn me alive.
"Not a morning person are you," I said sarcastically.
"No shit Amber," She said. I gave a small smile before getting up and walking around to my backpack. I heard her groan and she finally managed to get up and go to the bathroom. I grabbed my backpack and changed my shirt into the blue sweater I found in the hotel yesterday. I put it on quickly and put my hair in a braid, letting it fall over my shoulder. I zipped up my backpack and grabbed it. I walked outside to feel the cool breeze on my face and the bright sunlight give a little heat. I walked over to the truck and opened the passenger door, putting my blue backpack on the floor and turned and before I managed to close the door, I felt strong arms wrap around my waist from behind me.
"Do you think anything could go wrong at this point?" He asked. When he asked that, I thought about my dream I saw yesterday. I remembered the blood and Lydia's face when the bullet came into contact with her skin. 5 hours was a long time but could something like that happen in 5 hours?
"Honestly. Yes," I said with a bit of a scared tone. His arms turned me to face his curious eyes.
"What's wrong?" He asked. He searched my face. I felt my heart start racing at what my thoughts were replaying in my head. The image of Lydia. No more secrets. No more secrets. I promised. We promised.
"Lydia said that it was probably nothing but yesterday I had a dream and at the end of it Lydia she had all this blood and she was still alive but she was losing a lot of blood," I said. Fear struck his face when the word blood came out of my mouth. He looked into the room where Lydia was standing in the doorway of.
"Trevor, it's not a big deal. She just had a nightmare," She said walking past us and into the backseat. How long was she standing there?
"Lydia," Trevor said, looking at her.
"No Trevor. It was just a dream she had. That's it. I can take care of myself anyways," She said, hopping into the truck. He looked back at me. He let out a deep breath and said, "If you get the same feeling, tell me. I'm not letting anything happen to you or Lydia."
I nodded and before he let me go he placed a soft and short kiss on my forehead. His strong hands let me go and he walked around to the drivers side of the car, hopping in before me. I took a deep breath and opened the door, hopping in and closing it behind me. Trevor started the car and went out of the parking lot. He took my hand and tangled our fingers. I was nervous about everything. What if the L-13's won't take us? What if they try to kill me and use Trevor? What if Lydia gets hurt like I saw her in my dream?
"No turning back now," He said. I looked at him and gave him a small smile. If I was going to start a new life, I wasn't going to do it alone.
"No turning back now," I responded with. And after that, I let my thoughts take over. This can work. We can help. The anger could help. And I can make a difference.
* * *
5 hours. 5 hours of thinking. Of silence. Of memories. And of dreams. We got to Los angeles a few minutes ago. Now we have to find the L-13's.
"Can we eat please? It's like 1 PM and I haven't had a single meal," Lydia said from the back, closing her laptop. I looked at Trevor, giving him a look saying that I was hungry too considering the only thing I've had today was a small bowl of fruits and a bottle of water.
"Ok. What do you want to eat?" He asked Lydia.
"Pssh. Ask your girlfriend I bet she is more decisive than me," Lydia said. No I wasn't. I couldn't make a decision about food in a million years because every single day I would want a salad or chicken or fries or a burger all in the same minute. Jared always made fun of me for it.
"Yeah not really the best in that field. Up to you Trevor," I said. He looked at me and gave a small laugh.
"I'm always the one put in the spot," He said. I ignored his comment and stared out my window. My mind was silent. And I wanted to save that moment. It was peaceful.
"Earth to Amber," Lydia said. I snapped out of my daze.
"What? Did you say something?" I asked.
Trevor looked at me with concerned eyes. I ignored his gaze.
"We're going to McDonalds. I wanted chicken nuggets and Trevor wants some as well. What do you want?" She asked. I didn't really like McDonalds but it was better than staying hungry. I could eat a salad but chicken nuggets sound really good right about now. But we still had some sandwiches from the hotel and another fruit bowl.
"I'll just eat the sandwich and fruit we have left," I said. I turned back to the window and savored the peaceful mindset I was wandering around in. After 5 minutes, Trevor parked us in an alleyway so nobody could see us considering the witch hunt for all three of us. Lydia got out of the car first and then Trevor too but he didn't close the door. He opened it and looked at me.
"Are you ok? You spaced out again," He asked. My eyes scanned his face.
"I'm fine," I said in a sweet voice. He searched my face before giving me a small smile.
"We'll be right back. You sure you don't want anything?" He asked. I thought about it for a second.
"Water. Please," I said. He gave another small smile before closing the door. I waited for a moment before getting out of my seat and walking to the back door. I heard a noise and turned my head quickly to where I heard it come from.
"Trevor?" I yelled. No response. I felt my stomach start to clench and anxiety started to build. My gun. Where's my gun? In the car. I chose not to go back and get it. Instead I just ignored the sound and turned back to the door. I reached for the bag that was right in front of me and I grabbed the sandwich, but as I reached for the fruits, I heard the noise again. I left the door open and slowly walked down the alleyway, trying to find the source of the sound.
"Trevor this isn't funny," I yelled, walking down the straight path.
"Lydia?" I yelled. I looked around and that's when I felt a shiver down my spine. I felt my heart race and that's when I heard Trevor and Lydia laughing.
"You guys are jerks, you know that, right?" I said in an angry tone. I still didn't feel the shover go away and my heart was still beating out of my chest. But it was probably nothing.
"Your fault for staying behind," Lydia said, walking past me. I looked at Trevor and tried to give him a look saying that something felt wrong. Someone else was here. He walked over to me and looked into my eyes.
"It was just a joke. Calm down," He said, putting a strand of hair behind my ear. I looked at his dark brown eyes and then looked past him. Someone else was there, and I knew that they were. Because the shiver came back, and I could hear a safety click off.
"We need to go. Right. Now," I said, looking back at him. The smile he had on his face came off. His eyes searched mine and that's when I saw the young man step out into the opening, holding a gun at us.
"I can't let you do that," The man said. He was 25 maybe. He was strong. I could see his muscles flexing. But he looked familiar. Trevor turned around to face him and grabbed my hand, pulling me behind him, trying to hide me. I turned my head to see Lydia standing next to the car.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the pretty girl from the road block," He said. I turned to face him again and I realized how he was familiar. He was the guy who dug his finger into my bruise. His eyes were still as wild as before. He pointed the gun away from Trevor and at me. I could feel Trevor squeeze my hand harder and harder but still being able to control his strength.
"What do you want?" I said, looking straight at the gun's barrel that was pointed at me.
"Sweetheart. You and your group here are worth a lot of money. Those two can survive but I'm afraid you are wanted dead," He said with a sly smile on his face. He was eager for what the labs wanted. And he knew I was terrified. But he didn't know what I could do. I focused on the gun and tried to lift it into the air. He could feel his grip loosening on it and gripped it harder.
"Not so fast. Your little freak mind trick won't work," He said. I focused harder and harder but the gun didn't leave his hand. He was too strong for me. I gave up and broke my concentration.
"Ok then. Now. Trevor, you are your friends are going to come with me. Or someone is going to get hurt. My bet is on your girlfriend but I wouldn't mind if something terrible happened to your sister," He said, slowly pointing his gun towards Lydia. Trevor looked back at her and then at me.
"No," He said, turning his head back towards the man. The man shrugged.
"Your mistake," The man said and he aimed back at me, pulling the trigger. I saw his finger on the trigger and his muscles flex and I ducked just in time before he sent the bullet flying through the air. I looked back at Lydia and saw the red dot in her stomach starting to spread across her shirt.
"Lydia!" I screamed, letting go of Trevor's hand and running towards her. I caught her before she fell and put my hands on her stomach. I looked back at Trevor who was looking at both of us. I lifted my hand and it was stained with blood. Lydia's blood.
"Trevor watch out!" I screamed as the man was about to punch Trevor across the face. He managed to duck away but the man brought the gun up and hit Trevor across the face, making him fall to the ground. Trevor looked so angry. Like he was about to lose control over everything. The man walked over to me and pointed the gun at my head.
"Sorry sweetheart. But you chose the wrong answer," He said. I heard his finger go on the trigger and I closed my eyes, ready for what was about to happen. I couldn't move. I was frozen, holding Lydia in my arms and trying to stop her blood. I couldn't leave her. I would never leave her. Then the man put the gun down. I heard it clatter against the floor. I opened my eyes to find the man cry right in front of me, looking around him like he was in another universe. My eyes wandered to Trevor who was standing behind the man, a few feet away, and was staring at the man with a strong intensity and anger in his eyes. I stared at Trevor for a moment before looking at the gun that was on the floor. I looked back at Lydia who was losing blood by the second. Grab it. Save us all. I reached for the gun and quickly aimed at the man standing over me and Lydia and pulled the trigger, sending the bullet straight through his body. He fell to the ground and I let out a deep breath before turning back to Lydia. I dropped the gun and put both of my hands on Lydia's stomach.
She was going pale and weak by the minute. Trevor ran over to me and put a hand on my shoulder. I looked up at him.
"We need to get her to a hospital. Now," I said. He shook his head.
"We can't. They'll turn us in the second we walk in," He said.
"She needs blood Trevor!" I yelled. He looked at me and his jaw clenched like it always did when he was thinking.
"In the car. I know where we can go," He said.
I looked down at Lydia and her eyes were still moving but they were moving slower. She was breathing but her breathing got weaker and weaker.
"Carry her in," I said. I got up from my crouched position and hopped into the car. Trevor scooped Lydia up and put her in the car, laying across the backseat and resting her head in my lap. I pressed my hands against her stomach again. He slammed the door and ran around to the driver's seat.
"Lydia. Talk to me," I whispered. She opened her light brown eyes.
"I think a chocolate would help a little," She said. I gave a small laugh at her joke. I looked at Trevor through the rearview mirror.
"Keep talking Lydia. Don't go to sleep," I said, turning back to her. His glare said 5 minutes. Hold on for 5 minutes.
"This is probably the first time I don't want to sleep forever. Because I know it will be forever," She said quietly.
"You're going to be fine Lydia. I promise. You just need to get some blood and heal," I said. Something shifted inside of my head. Like I came up with an idea. That's when Lydia closed her eyes.
"Lydia. Open your eyes," I said, my voice cracking.
"Take care of my brother Amber. And tell him I love him," She said quietly. She was breathing. Her heart was still beating but it slowed down with every breath.
"We're here," He said. He jumped out of the car quickly and came around to pick Lydia up into his arms. I got out as soon as he closed the door, and I ran to the entrance of the small hospital right in front of us. I opened the door and Trevor ran in after me. I opened the first door that led to a room and Trevor laid Lydia on the bed, hooking her up to the heart monitor frantically.
"Trevor what blood type is she?" I asked, keeping my hands on the wound holding the blood back. Her heart was slow. Almost flat lining.
"I...I," He stuttered and didn't respond.
"Trevor! Focus! What blood type is she?" I yelled. He looked at me before saying "I don't know."
I broke eye contact from him and felt shock throughout my body. We were going to lose Lydia. She was going to die. Then the idea came to me.
"Put your hands right here," I said, looking down at my hands and back at him. He looked at me before putting pressure on her wound. I lifted my blood stained hands and walked around to the side where Trevor was standing. I was looking for a needle in the cart that was against the wall. I frantically searched for a needle and found one.
"Amber what are you doing?" He asked. I ignored his question and looked for a tube and another needle that had an opening. I found both and a rubber band. I wrapped the rubber band around my upper arm, tightly, and forced a vein out. I connected one needle to the tube and another needle at the opposite end.
"Amber, What the hell are you doing?" He questioned again. I looked at him and then at Lydia. She was dying. And if I was right, this could help. I stuck one end of the needle into my arm and I winced a bit at the pinch.
"Saving her life," I said. I looked at him and he looked at me. I stuck the other end of the tube into Lydia's arm and the blood started flowing.
"Close the wound Trevor," I said. He looked at me.
"There's a thread and needle in the cart. Stitch up the wound. Trust me," I said. He searched my face and then walked over to the cart to grab the thread and needle. I looked at Lydia and at her heart monitor. It was still slow but she was breathing. And her heart was beating. That's what mattered. He walked over with a sanitary wipe, a needle, and a thread. He looked at me before lifting up Lydia's shirt to expose the wound. I didn't even notice when he finished stitching her up until he said my name. 10 minutes must have passed but it felt like seconds. Probably the adrenaline in my system.
"Amber?" He said. I looked away from the spot in the wall that I was staring at and at his dark eyes.
"What were you thinking about?" He asked, walking back over to the cart to put away the rest of the thread and grab a cotton patch.
"Trying to figure out if my idea is actually going to work or if it's stupid," I said. He walked back over and put the cotton patch on Lydia's wound and looked up at me.
"And what idea was that?" He asked curiously. I looked straight into his eyes and took a deep breath before looking at Lydia.
"Seeing if I could transfer healing properties through blood. If it doesn't work then Lydia is going to be in a lot of pain for the next few weeks," I said. I looked back at him.
"How do you know you're the right blood type?" He asked, walking around to me. My eyes followed him.
"Universal donor. My mom has always told me to donate because I could save a lot of lives since I'm O negative," I responded.
"Thank you," He said. I looked at him. And then I noticed his bruised cheek. I lifted my free hand and carefully moved my fingers across his cheek. He flinched at the pain.
"What happened back there? What was that?" I asked, remembering the image of the man standing over me and pointing at my head and then him crying when I opened my eyes.
"I couldn't let him take you away from me too," He said quietly. I shook my head.
"You didn't even know if it would work," I said quietly. He searched my face.
"I had to try," He said. I let my hand fall from his cheek.
"Thank you," I said, resting my forehead against his chest. He put a hand in my hair and started stroking my hair.
"I made a promise to you. And I don't plan on breaking it," He said. I closed my eyes for a few minutes, just standing there against his chest. Feeling his heat against my skin and savoring his scent.
"Amber. Look," He said. I opened my eyes to look at the heart monitor. Her heart was beating faster. Way faster than before.
"It worked," I said. I reached for a cotton ball on the bed and took the needle out of Lydia's arm. I pressed the cotton ball against her arm and grabbed the rubber band to make it stay. When I was sure the cotton would stay, I grabbed another cotton ball and took the needle out of my arm, cringing at the pain. I pressed the cotton ball against my arm and then I felt the small dizziness come. 30 minutes of giving blood. Maybe too much. I usually give blood fastly when I went to a blood drive. Took maybe 5 minutes for 1 pint of blood.
I shook my head to shake the dizziness away.
"Want some food? It could help," Trevor said. I nodded and walked over to the chair that was in a corner of the room. I feel drained, tired. Probably because I tried to use my telekinesis. At least there was no headache. I didn't care that I was hungry. I didn't care that I was cold. I was just so tired. I let my head rest against the soft part of the chair and my arms wrap around my waist. I felt my eyes drop down until they were too heavy to pick up. I let them fall and I fell asleep.
* * *
When I woke up, there was a blanket on top of me and food on the table next to me. Trevor was leaning against the opening of the door, looking at Lydia. I rubbed the sleepiness away from my eyes and took a deep breath. His dark eyes looked at me.
"How do you feel?" He asked. I looked at Lydia before looking at him.
"There's no headache so that's good," I said. My eyes drifted back to Lydia. Her heartbeat was normal and her breathing was stabilized. Her skin color was back to normal. She was ok. Alive. And healthy.
Trevor walked over to me and helped me up from the chair. I still felt a bit weak but I could walk normally. I looked back at Lydia.
"She's Ok. She woke up about a half hour ago. She's Ok," He said. I looked back up at him and gave a small smile.
"So much for a dream," I said. My smile faded and I looked away from Trevor. I saw it. I knew it was coming. And I didn't stop it. I could have but I ducked. To save myself instead of Lydia.
"You couldn't have done anything. As much as I didn't want it to happen you couldn't have stopped it," He said. I looked up at him. I could feel the anger building up. I could have. It's my fault she is in here. The labs are done taking away everything from me.
"Do you really believe that?" I asked. It came off angrier than I actually was.
"Whatever we do, we can't change what is supposed to happen. Don't blame yourself for it. You didn't kill her Amber. You saved her," He said. I scanned across Lydia's face. I saved her. And I was proud of that. Even if it meant me starting it. I would have died for her. For Trevor. That's how much they mean to me.
"How do you feel about your side-effect?" I asked. I looked over at Trevor who was looking down at the floor and shaking his head.
"It scared me. I almost lost you and Lydia in one second and when that happened, I just felt myself inside his head. Bringing out his darkest fear and using it against him. And I enjoyed it," He said with a deep voice. He looked over at me. I moved my hand over to his slowly until he tangled our fingers together.
"I guess we both have monsters to be scared of," I said. I was about to lay my head on his shoulder until I saw something on Lydia's skin. Actually, I saw nothing in her stomach. My brows furrowed in confusion and I walked over to one of Lydia's bed sides. I lifted up her shirt and saw the faint scar that would disappear in a few days like mine did.
"Trevor," I said, looking up at him with confusion on my face still.
"She's healed. Almost completely," I said. He walked over to me and saw the same faint scar I saw. It was small but still red, indicating it was fresh. But in a matter of days, there wouldn't even be a trace of a scar there.
"That's impossible, isn't it?" He asked. I searched his face.
"My blood worked. It healed her faster," I said. I looked back at Lydia and put her shirt back down.
"How long do you think it will take for her to get back on her feet?" Trevor asked. I looked into his eyes. I think we both knew what this meant.
"By tomorrow," I said. He walked over to the chair and back to me.
"This is crazy Amber. Do you know how many people are going to be looking for you if the labs find this out. You're a universal blood donor with healing properties and you have the TC side-effect. The labs won't kill you when they get their hands on you, they'll use you," He said. I searched his face.
"If they find out," I responded with, stopping him in his tracks by putting my hands on his shoulders.
"Right now, the only ones that know are you and Lydia. And that's all the people that need to know. The labs won't know that I can transfer healing properties through my blood, they only know my blood type," I said. He looked at me with his dark eyes. He didn't know what to do or what to say. He was scared and so was I. But we both knew that.
He let out a deep breath. "This whole thing scares me. But what scares me more is you," He said. I looked at him with confusion.
"How do I scare you?" I asked even though my heart was racing right now.
"Well for one, you're probably the most powerful person ever," He whispered. I looked down at his lips.
"Two, you're not afraid of death. You almost got killed back there and you didn't even flinch," He said. I looked back up at his eyes. I wasn't scared because I was saving you.
"And three...," He paused and looked down at my lips. "I'm completely in love with you. And that's what scares me most," He said. He looked back up at my eyes and closed the distance between our bodies with only a flick of his hand. I couldn't stop the smile from creeping up on my face when our lips were inches apart and his arms wrapped around my waist.
"Maybe I'm scared of you too," I whispered.
"Maybe I'm scared because I'm also completely in love with you. And I'm already broken enough. I'm scared that you might break me even more than I already am," I said. A small, crooked smile popped up onto his face.
"Impossible," He whispered.
"Why is that?" I asked, slowly leaning in.
"Because you're too strong to be broken," He whispered. Our lips were centimeters apart when I heard a cough come from behind us. Trevor's eyes wandered to Lydia's bed.
"I'm kinda trapped in this bed so if you guys could maybe move the make out session outside that would be great," The high pitched voice said sarcastically. I gave a small laugh and so did Trevor. Trevor let me go and I turned around to face Lydia, separating our bodies with a few steps.
"Why do you hate kissing so much?" I asked in a joking tone. She shrugged.
"It's gross. And you two are way too sappy," She said, laughing afterwards. I searched her face.
"How do you feel?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
"I feel like I can walk but my protective brother over there won't let me get off of this stupid bed," She said, glaring at Trevor. I turned my head to look at him. He looked at me before giving a sigh.
"You know. Sometimes I love that you two are dating," She said. I turned my head back to face Lydia.
"Go walk around before I change my mind too," I said. Her eyes widened and she quickly got out of bed and walked out of the room. My eyes followed her until her figure left the small, fluorescent lit room. I turned around, facing Trevor again.
"Maybe you should take a walk too," Trevor said, walking towards him and wrapping his arms around my waist again. I put my hands on his arms and rubbed them up and down.
"Or...," I paused, looking up at his eyes.
"Or?" He questioned.
"You can help me control my telekinesis," I said. He gave a small smile before asking the question on his mind.
"Have the rest of your side-effects come in?" He asked. I let the corners of my lips bend down and I shook my head. I was a little disappointed that my theory didn't work. But it's only been a day and I don't know how to control it so something may happen. Hopefully.
"Maybe you need more time," He said. I met his eyes.
"Maybe," I said. We stood there for a moment, just looking at each other. I felt my heart race faster than it has ever been before and my head being way more clouded than ever.
"Ok. Come on," Trevor said, letting me go and walking out the door. I stood there for a second and after staring at him, I quickly caught up to him.
"Stand there," He said, pointing to a certain point on the floor. I stepped where his finger was pointing. He walked over to a cart and grabbed a cotton ball but without even touching it. It was just floating in the air like there was a rope from his finger connected to the cotton ball. I let a smile show on my face when I saw him using his side-effects so easily. So freely. He returned the smile.
"It works both ways. You can control where things go like a rope is tied to the object but you can also use it like a force, pushing something away," He said. I took my eyes off of the floating cotton ball and looked into his eyes.
"You just have to focus. But you also have to have a good reaction time. Just think about what you want to do," He said. I thought about what he said. I pictured the cotton ball floating towards me and the air around me rippling from the force I was sending out to hold it in place but still letting it fly in the air. I pictured it over and over again and then Trevor launched the cotton ball at me. But it was like a white blur in the air.
"Like I said. Fast reaction time," He said. I turned back to him and searched his face. He grabbed another cotton ball and let it stay in the air for a few seconds before launching at me again. Without thinking about what I wanted to do, I put a hand out and let my instincts take over. I felt the energy form itself inside of me and go through my hand, rippling the air and pushing the cotton ball back but letting it stay in place. I wasn't even focusing. It happened naturally.
"Did you picture what you wanted to do?" He asked. I broke my shocked face away from my hand and the force it was pushing against the cotton and looked at Trevor.
"No. It just...happened," I said. He walked over to me slowly and plucked the cotton ball out of the air with his fingers. I made the energy stop coursing through me when he lifted it. I let my hand fall down to my side.
"And that...was a test," He said. I looked into his eyes with confusion.
"A test for what?" I questioned. He gave a small smile.
"That your hyper awareness can be triggered without something dangerous happening," He said. He had a theory. And it was right. My hyper awareness doesn't have to be triggered if I'm in danger. It could be triggered just by something so small and soft like a cotton ball about to touch my skin. And my telekinesis connected with that.
"You are something else Amber," He said quietly. His eyes slowly drifted down to my lips.
"Is that a good thing or bad?" I asked, trying to resist the urge to kiss him by how close we were.
"I don't think it could ever be bad," He said, his voice deep. His eyes drifted back up to mine. I wanted to kiss him. So badly. But I also wanted to mess with him a bit. We stood there in silence while my hand drifted back and pulled the cotton ball up into the air. I slyly moved the cotton ball with my finger and threw it in his face. We both let a laugh out when the soft ball hit his cheek.
"Why not make it a little bit more interesting," I whispered in his ear. I let a smile crawl onto my face before walking past him and leaving him in the hallway. I couldn't help but smile. It always happened when I was with Trevor. But I also liked to mess with him a bit. On the other hand though, even though we are dating and we have known each other for 4 months, he knew I still didn't want to go too fast. Yes we've done things together but I still didn't want too much. And Trevor knew that. It felt good to be around him, but it also felt good to restrain ourselves.
I walked around the hospital for a few minutes before finding Lydia at a vending machine. I slowly walked over to her and once I reached her, I put a hand on her shoulder.
"Did you and Trevor make out again?" She asked. I gave a small laugh.
"You're not the only person who likes to mess with Trevor a bit," I responded. She bent down to reach for the chips that she got and some peanuts. I let my hand fall to my side.
"He's happier. And I know what he wants in a relationship," She said, turning to look at me.
"He never wanted to be smothered in a relationship. Only hanging out with one person and constantly showing affection. And you're the same with it too. You both have lines that neither of you can cross because you have the same boundaries. He's happier. And I'm happy for both of you," She said. I gave her a smile.
"Is the Lydia Brown admitting that she doesn't hate love?" I said teasingly. She punched my arm.
"If you tell Trevor I will hurt you," She said. I laughed at her response. Her smile quickly faded.
"Can I ask you something?" I said. She looked at me again and gave me a faint smile and a small nod.
"Why do you hate couples so much?" I asked. She opened her chips and started walking down the hallway. I walked beside her.
"For the past 3 years, it's been me and Trevor. Tons of girls threw themselves at Trevor while I had nobody. I mean sure I had Trevor but not really. We were separated for 3 years. No talking. Because of the guys in the warehouse. If they found out I was his sister it would have been a mess. But when you came into Trevor's life, I saw how much he cared about you. And since then I've just been jealous I guess. I've always wanted someone there. To hug me. Kiss me. Love me like you and Trevor love each other," She explained. I put a hand on her shoulder.
"Lydia. Trevor and I got lucky. We found each other by coincidence. I get what you mean. You wanted someone to love you. But you will find that person. Soon. And they will make you feel like a different person. Even when you have known them for so long you will still get nervous when they are around you, hug you, kiss you. You'll know when you find them," I said. She looked at me and gave a small smile.
"At least I have you," She said. I pushed her away teasingly.
"You'll always have me Lydia. Even when you hate me," I said, remembering back to the warehouse where it seemed like she despised me. We kept walking down the hall, joking around about her grumpiness towards everything, until we reached her room. Trevor wasn't inside and I found that kind of weird.
"You stay here. I'm going to go look for Trevor," I said. She hopped into the bed and gave me a small nod before laying down in the bed and closing her eyes. I walked out of the room and into the dark hallway. I walked for a few minutes before reaching the place that we practiced with cotton balls.
"Trevor?" I yelled. Nobody responded. I looked around and found another hallway connecting to the one I was standing in right now. I hesitated before walking down the hallway. I looked inside each room to see if he was inside any of them. They were all clean and organized but haven't been disturbed in years.
"Trevor?" I yelled again.
"Amber?" I heard a voice yell. I looked around and saw Trevor at the end of the hall. There was a dark skinned teen behind him, holding a gun to his head. I was about to run to him when he shook his head.
"Run," he mouthed. Right as I was about to turn around, someone hit me hard in the back of the head. I fell to the ground and my vision went blurry for a second. Then I felt strong hands lift me up and pin me against the wall. His hand around my throat. My vision took a few seconds before focusing on the dark skinned man in front of me.
"Let her go," Trevor asked. The boy's grip tightened around my neck and I was gasping for air.
"Not until you tell us who you're working with," The dark skinned man said. His eyes seemed angry but somewhere in there he didn't like what he was doing.
"Jamie, let her go a bit. After all you're the one with the strength," The boy from behind Trevor said.
He hesitated for a moment. "Tell us," He said angrily.
"Let her go!" Trevor yelled again with anger in his voice. His hand finally let me go and I fell against the wall. I felt dizzy from the lack of oxygen I got. Trevor rushed over to me and pulled me into his arms. I was shaking and coughing against his chest.
"Who are you guys?" The boy holding the gun asked. I managed to look at him. He was handsome. They both were. The boy holding the gun looked 18 maybe 19 and his eyes were such a beautiful blue color. Like aqua blue. He looked stronger than Trevor, at least his build did. Which was surprising since Trevor looked decently strong. His hair was dark brown and he had fair skin like mine.
I looked away from him and let out another cough, trying to get air into my lungs. Trevor's arms tightened around me.
"We're kids trying to find the L-13's. We had to stop here because my sister got shot," Trevor said.
"You guys pures?" The dark skinned boy asked. His hair was buzzed and his eyes were almost black. His skin wasn't very dark, it was like milk chocolate. His eyes had a certain sparkle to it. He looked 18, but he could pass for 17 as well. He was also strong but not as strong as Trevor. His arms didn't have the same built muscles Trevor did. He must have had strength for a side-effect.
"We wouldn't be on the run if we weren't," I said angrily. I looked at the dark skinned boy and he narrowed his eyes at me. He slowly walked over to me but I didn't step back. I just stood there staring back at him.
"Talk to me like that again and you may have to go to an operating hospital," He said, towering over me. Trevor let go of me and stepped between the boy and me. The boy was a bit shorter than Trevor.
"You want to go to her, you have to go through me," Trevor said with an edge to his voice.
"And I don't go down easily," He finished with. The boy looked at Trevor and then back at me before stepping back.
"Listen. Jamie is just a bit scared," The boy with the gun said. Jamie looked at him and the boy with dark brown hair ignored the glare that was being given to him.
"We're with the L-13's. I'm Lucas. That's Jamie as you know. We came to get some medical supplies and we have a van in front to go back. If your sister is Ok to leave and walk then we can take you guys with us," Lucas said. His aqua eyes drifted to my dark brown ones.
"We aren't going to hurt you. We just got a bit spooked and thought you guys were with Fallen labs," He said to me. I searched his face for any indication of a lie. He was telling the truth. I took a step, putting me a bit in front of Trevor and crossed my arms over my chest.
"Can we have a moment to talk? I'm assuming you guys still need to get your supplies," I said to Lucas. He gave a small smile and nodded his head. He turned around and walked down the hall. Jamie stayed and stared at me before catching up with Lucas. I let out a relieved breath before turning to face Trevor.
"Are you alright?" He asked, looking at me with worried eyes.
"I'm fine now," I said nodding my head. He gave a faint smile.
"What do you think we should do?" He asked. I looked away from him for a moment to gather my thoughts. I started nodding slowly with my thoughts and after a moment I looked up at him.
"Lydia is fine now. All she has is a scar which should be gone by tomorrow. If we go with them now then we would be safe from danger. No more people pointing guns at us. We can be safe," I said. His eyes scanned my face.
"Go get Lydia. I'll talk to them. Tell them that we're going," He said. I put a hand on his shoulder and it fell to his hand. He held it for a few seconds before I walked down the hallway, going to Lydia's room. I got there in seconds and ran inside. I walked over to her bed and shook her awake.
"Lydia! Come on get up," I said. She opened her eyes and sat up.
"What's going on Amber?" She asked.
"Get your things, we're leaving," I said eagerly. She looked confused.
"Did something happen? Your neck is red," She said. I put a hand on my neck and felt a sting of pain.
"The L-13's are here. We're leaving with them," I said, ignoring the pain in my neck. She got out of her bed and threw on her shoes when she heard L-13 come out of my mouth. I stood there for a second and she stared at me with her backpack in her hand.
"Well move your ass!" She said, running out of the room to meet Trevor. I grabbed the other bag in the chair and put my backpack on my back. I walked out of the room and back to the spot where Trevor, Lydia, Jamie, and Lucas. Lucas turned around to look at me and walked over, stopping me to talk.
"Listen, I'm sorry about Jamie. He was just scared," He said. I gave a faint smile. His aqua eyes wandered down to my neck.
"Maybe you should take it easy. It could take a while to heal," He said.
"It's fine," I said. Lie, Lie, Lie.
"I was an athlete so I'm a quick healer," I lied, trying to cover up the fact that I have healing as a side-effect.
"If you're sure about it," He said, suspiciously.
"I never got your name," He said, letting his eyes drift up to mine. I gave him a small smile.
"Amber," I said. He seemed sweet. Nice. And he was very attractive.
"And I'm assuming Trevor over there is your boyfriend?" He asked. I nodded in response without hesitation.
"Well, I know you just met me but I'm nicer than Jamie so considering that you're not scared of me, I can show you around the compound once we get there," He said.
"That would be nice. Thanks," I said. He turned back around and walked over to the group and I walked behind him.
"You guys ready to go?" Lucas asked. We all nodded in unison.
"Ok. Follow me," Lucas said, walking out of the exit door that led to the front of the hospital. When we got outside, there was a black van parked. Lucas opened the door and revealed two more girls. One girl had light purple tips and the other had nothing in her hair. One had a darker shade of blonde while the girl with purple in her hair had bright blond hair.
"Amy, Emily, we got some runaways," Lucas said, hopping into the back and sitting down. Jamie hopped in behind Lucas and we all followed.
The girl with the dirty blonde hair looked at me with her bright hazel eyes, showing off the green and brown very clearly. Her hair was short, going a little past her shoulders and her skin was like Lydia's. A mix of tan and white.
"I'm Amy. This idiot next to me is my sister Emily," She pointed before turning on the van. Emily had a duller color of hazel for her eyes and her hair was paler. Her skin was a bit lighter than her sisters. She looked at me and then at Lydia and when she got to Trevor, she just stared at him. That's when she finally talked.
"Hi," Her soft voice said. Trevor finally locked eyes with her and said "Hi."
Lydia gave me a look and I gave her the same look. Both of our eyes said the same thing. Well she seems strange.
"Amy, we got everything. Can you maybe, you know, drive?" Lucas said. Amy gave a small chuckle before putting the van out of park and driving like a maniac.
"And maybe not crashing," Jamie said.
"Ok that only happened once," She said. I gave a small laugh. She looked at me and gave a small smile. I liked her. She seemed funny. We stayed quiet for a few minutes before Jamie asked us a question that was bound to get everyone talking.
"You guys have any side-effects?" He asked. I looked at Trevor and he looked at me. Tell them. They can help us with control.
"I have telekinesis," Lydia said. I looked at her.
"What? It's not like it's a crime," She said, shrugging her shoulders. Lucas gave a small laugh and so did Amy. Jamie and Emily stayed quiet.
"I'm assuming she's the sassy one," Amy said.
"You have no idea," Trevor responded. Emily looked at him for a moment and locked eyes until Amy took a hand and turned Emily's head back to the front. I appreciated that.
"My sister here doesn't know manners so I'm sorry for her staring," She said in a sassy voice.
"What about you Amber? Any side-effects?" Lucas asked. I looked at him and nodded, staying quiet before answering.
"I have sight, hearing, hyper awareness, healing and...," I paused looking at Trevor. He gave a small smile trying to tell me it's Ok. I turned back to Lucas and finished. "And I have telekinesis and mind control," I said. His light blue eyes widened and so did Amy's.
"Wait so you're saying that you're the last living TC kid?" Jamie asked. I shook my head.
"I have a brother. He hasn't been injected yet but he has the genes to receive that side-effect," I said. They stayed quiet. Amy is the one that broke the silence.
"Well shit. Guess we have some work to do guys," She said. I looked at her and gave her the same smile as before. Ok, I knew that we were going to be friends now. Emily is the one that asked Trevor about his side-effects.
"What about you Trevor? Any side-effects?" Her high pitched voice asked.
"Yeah. Sight, hearing, strength, telekinesis, strength, and IP side-effect," He said. Amy slammed on the breaks.
"What the hell Amy!" Lucas said.
"What was I supposed to do? I almost ran a red light," She responded back. Emily ignored her comment and the rest of us broke into laughter. Amy and I especially.
"Bad timing I guess," She said. We let the laughter die down before resuming our conversation.
"So you two are like one of the most powerful freaks?" Lucas asked. I heard a murmur under Emily's breath. "Amber more than Trevor," She said. Nobody else heard except Amy who elbowed Emily in the arm. What was her deal? She just met me.
"Pretty much," I said, ignoring Emily's comment.
"Well we need to talk to Amanda about that. Maybe she could set something up for you guys to train with your abilities," Amy said.
"Wait. Who's Amanda?" I asked. Then a bright light came into the van.
"You're about to find out," Amy said, parking the car and turning it off.
