Chapter 1 continued (Final part)
Metal Of Creation
The Bio-Students here gave it that name for a reason. Once they hit you, all you saw was nothing. A blank, black screen, until you woke in the infirmary three days later. It did not affect Zaylee instead, it strengthened her. Which, is why they came up with another weapon of choice.
The Screamer Grenade: Able to give a raging headache and scramble thoughts by a wave of sound.
Use: Only for special genetic bio-humans that blank shockers don't affect, Bio-offspring riots, and rebels. Another reason why I had to keep to myself.
My team members were the only ones I communicated with here. Masha being able to read lips and knowing how to sign was a bonus. We all needed each other for our reasons. We looked at each other for guidance, and we protected each other. We were all smart. Masha was just smarter. She learned the weak points of the arena and B-building before I did. My plan was almost complete, I just needed something else, but that would have to wait for later. We all trudged down the hallway in a silent cluster. Many eyes on each and everyone one of us. I met the opaque visor of one guard. Knowing he was watching and waiting. I glanced away, noticing the GIs plastered against each section of the walls. Hands-on their blank shockers. I turned back to Masha signing.
"Not here, too many curious eyes and ears." She gave me a slight head nod glancing over my shoulder.
I wasn't just talking about the guards, either. Daisha had turned around, curiosity flittering in her blue eyes. I knew she was watching us the minute I had started talking to Masha. I stared forward, voiding my face of all emotions. My annoyance toward her still rose, twitching my brow. Annoyance at the fact that Daisha could never mind her business when necessary.
Daisha looked past me to Masha. A smile stretched her skin as she spoke. "Hi. Chameleon."
I was the only one who knew Masha's real name. Everyone else knew her by chameleon. Masha chose to stare ahead, ignoring Daisha. Daisha's illuminating smile turned into a frown. I fought the smirk peeking at the corner of my lips. Daisha was the only one who Masha chose not to speak to. Masha had her reasons for not liking Daisha. They used to be in the same training school, but something crucial had happened. Something I chose not to ask about.
If Masha wanted me to know, she would have told me. I heard from other mouths they were separated from each other and sent to lead other teams. I recalled another rumor that it was something darker that lead them to separate groups. Something as dark as the betrayal of a teammate. I knew one of their teammates had met a cruel end, and somehow Daisha or either Masha was responsible for the death. There was one thing you didn't do. One unsaid rule that every team went by. You never betrayed a teammate. I only knew the first part was accurate because after Masha became the leader of the other selection.
Daisha was taken to our elite squad taking Kira's place as a leader by majority vote. By the majority, I meant Zaylee. I had seniority over all of them, including Masha. My vote would have kept Daisha from becoming a leader and saving us the headache of having Masha and Daisha fight over leadership. Even saying this, I still didn't care enough to vote. Even if I was senior to all three of them. I didn't want to lead. I didn't want to vote or dictate the plans and lead our team through battles because I didn't care. All I wanted was to get the hell out of here. I was no leader or hero. I would leave you the second I thought you would slow the team down. The weak do not survive in what we do. Which is why I was choosing to keep to myself. The people on this team, my team, were the people who I respected most. The only person I wouldn't sacrifice was Masha and the three girls on this team. They would all do the same for me.
I saved my team because I had to. I glanced around as we entered a new room. The boys of the arena met us halfway, merging with our group. We all paused in front of two enormous doors stretching to curve at the top in a dome-like structure. No one talked or whispered. We were all silent. A loud beeping sound came as a single white light flashed in the middle of the ceiling. Everyone stirred. Readying their weapons and gathering in circles with their assigned team members. My dragons heated. Sensing the embers, I ignited inside myself. I closed my eyes. Giving myself a moment to breathe. A loud wrenching noise echoed in the quiet cavern as the doors behind us closed. I knew without opening my eyes that everyone was still staring ahead. No one ever looked behind here.
"Don't be a hero, Loo. Heroes don't survive in this place. We look out for our team and each other, and only that. Nothing less. Nothing more. Surviving. That's all you need to worry about." The memory of HER words ringing strong in my ears.
Almost like she was standing next to me, whispering them. My eyes were still closed. I heard the large metal doors open in front of us. Sweltering heat enveloped my skin, causing a light sweat to break out across it. My eyes shot open.
"Fight and Survive, Loo." She whispered again.
I intended on doing just that. Even if that meant I had to kill anyone who got in my way to do it.
