Confession Part 2

A house that was usually active and full of energy has been quiet as a museum since Friday night because of him.

 The minutes, hours and seconds ticked away as Zi Xuan waited for his parents to process all that he had confessed to them the night before.

Since his confessions both of his parents left any room that he would wander into. Zi Xuan thought that they were acting very immature at this point. If their goal was to make him regret telling them anything about his boyfriend or volleyball, they almost succeed with their juvenile attics.

  The only person in the house that would acknowledge him at the moment was his younger sister Qian Ru. She played as a ref between the two combated sides. Without her by his side he would have felt very isolated.

By Sunday night he wished that the weekend was over and that he could go back to school. Even to take the exams over again.

Zi Xuan has been coup up in his room for two days only venturing out to eat. Finally feeling restless and bored he wandered through the house looking for some simulations other than his four walls.

 He just needed to get through the rest of this day with his sanity intact. Yu Hao was at his part-time job today so he couldn't even call him to distract him. He decided a good book will help him pass the time. One of his father old History books should do the trick.

Zi Xuan creeped to the study door and peeked his head inside. His dad's papers, textbooks, and artworks where stacked all over the room but nobody was inside. He gave a sigh of relief when he saw the empty room. He walked in and began looking for a book to read. He was just ten minutes into his search when his father walked in and shut the door.

 Zi Xuan dropped the book he was holding, stunned by the sudden intrusion. Whipping his head around, "Dad. You scared me." He said picking the dropped book off the floor. "I was just getting a book to read before bed. I will be done in a moment." When his father didn't leave and just stared at him Zi Xuan cleared his throat in the awkward silent.

   Zi Xuan continued, "Is something wrong? Do you need your study right now?"

"No." He father continue to stare at him not uttering a word.

Wow you have to love the short, one word answers, Zi Xuan thought as the room became silent again.

"Are you sure that you don't need anything." Zi Xuan said waiting until his father left to continue searching.

"I'm sure. Take your time finding a book." His father said as he walked over to the desk and sat down. "On second thought. Why don't you have a seat son?"

So this is where it happens, Zi Xuan thought. The final showdown will be inside his dad's junky study. The conversation that he's been secretly hoping for and dreading all at the same time has finally arrived. Zi Xuan heart felt like it would beat out of his chest at any moment but he shrugged his shoulders as if it was no big deal to his father.

Zi Xuan turned from the bookcase and sat on the couch. His father didn't say anything just cleaned his already clean glasses. Both him and his dad had that nervous twitch to clean their glasses when they were nervous. Zi Xuan took off his glasses to clean his as well.

"You do understand why we are upset with you right?" his father said randomly. Places his glasses back on his face and give Zi Xuan and intense stare.

"Yes of course I do." Zi Xuan answered. Putting his glasses back on his face as well.

"I wonder if you do." His father pondered rubbing his chin.

"You are mad at me because I lied to you about volleyball for a year and I didn't tell you about Yu Hao." Zi Xuan stated.

"With you as our son we were never worried about you. You got good grades at school. You looked after your sister and the house when we were out of town. You followed the rules, you never misbehaved. I don't even remember a time I grounded you. So this was unexpected."

"I know I let you down. I didn't realize that I was telling so many lies until I put it all together. I guess I tried to justify to myself that it technically wasn't lying if I was never asked about it. That's how I justify not telling you about Yu Hao. You guys really didn't need to know because you never asked. Same for my major in college. It was the wrong way to go and I let you down but I also let Yu Hao down as well. " Zi Xuan stated with his head down.

"No I let you down." His father said.

Zi Xuan head instantly came up. "No Dad. It wasn't you."

"No No. Hear me out Xuan. I have been meaning to say this for a while now. Maybe you weren't the only one holding a part of yourself back." His father took a deep breath and continued. "I knew how much you loved volleyball. After I took you to your first game when you were little it was the only sport you would acknowledge. You carried around that volleyball of yours everywhere you went. You proudly wrote your name on it. You even went to sleep with it. We should have known than what we were dealing with, when it came to you. You told us your dream of becoming a pro and I knew no other job would ever make you happy. I even gave up trying to train you to take over the company. Then the accident happened and I saw my son's bright future dim."

"Dad that wasn't your fault and my future isn't finish. I had some roadblocks and some detour to take but I can still get on the battlefield of volleyball. Just in a different way" Zi Xuan said trying to reassure his father.

His father got up and walked to the couch and sat beside Zi Xuan "I saw the pain that you tried to hide from us Xuan. We smiled in your face but after you turned around we cried. The days and weeks of rehab, watching you try to learn a skill that you have known your whole life all over again. You had to do so much in your young life. We added to that burden by taking away the one thing in your life that brought you joy. We just couldn't stand to see you suffer because of your love of the sport. A parent would rather take 10 cuts to save their child from getting one."

"Dad it's ok. I'm OK. I'm still in the game. I may not be able to fight on the floor with the other players but I fight using my brain." Zi Xuan said pointing to his head. "Through strategies and trainings even the operation of the team. My dream of volleyball didn't end and will not end just because of this." He emphasizes the statement by pointing to his knee. "It will just continue in another way. I plan on studying dual majors at university. One in computer science and the other in sports & health. The more skills I have the more powerful I will be on the field and will be able to help my team on the court."

His father looked surprised. "You really thought about this didn't you son. That sounded very mature. I guess we still see you as that cute short kid running around the house clutching his volleyball. When did you become and adult on me? If you would have just told us all of this sooner we would have listened and understood. Your mother won't have to worry that you will be trying to play the game with the team and hurt yourself."

"I realize that now Dad. I went about the whole situation all wrong. I apologize to everyone that I've hurt in all of this. I guess I didn't trust you to understand my point of view.." Zi Xuan commented.

"We as parents didn't trust you enough to be mature about your own health. I sorry for that. We lacked trust on both sides. I will try to talk to your mother about it. If she realized how important this is to you, there is no way she won't give in." his dad promised.

"Thanks. That's all I want dad. Is for you guys to trust that I know what's right for me." Zi Xuan said as he hugged his father.

His father pulled back and said, "Now let's talk about Yu Hao."

"What about him?" Zi Xuan asked cautiously.

"I refuse to let you date him?" his father said suddenly

"What? Why? I thought you liked him." Zi Xuan asked shock.

"Why do I have to have a reason? You are my child and you live in my house. That gives me rights over everything in your life." his father said.

"Dad we just talked about you understanding and letting me make my own choices. I understand that he and I aren't what most people think of as a conventional couple. Does that give us any less right not to love each other? You and mom taught me to respect and love everyone no matter whom or what they are." Zi Xuan argued.

"Since when have you taken us this literal? When i told you to love everyone. I assumed you would bring home an American, a Korean or something along those lines. Not another male." he father said.

"So all you taught us and all that you said about equality for all were lies."

"No you should respect all people just don't bring them home and call them a wife. I do want equality for all outside of my home." his father clarified.

"I want you guys to give Yu Hao a chance. If you did, you would love him as much as I do." Zi Xuan pleaded.

"I refuse to give a boy a chance in my home other than Qian Ru husband." his father stated.

"That's not fair."

"Life isn't fair Zi Xuan."

"I won't give up on him and I won't give up changing your mind about him. He makes me a better person. I love you guys but I won't stop loving him."

"Even if I say it's us or him. I may never acknowledge him as your spouse will you both be fine with that."

"I refused to give him up."

"I will always introduce him to friends and family as your roommate or best friend. Will you still pursue this?"

"Yes." Zi Xuan stated confidently.

His father got up from the couch and went back behind the desk again taking off his glasses again to clean them before saying," Good. I like him. We talked while you were upstairs getting dressed." Coughing. " He is very knowledgeable in many things. We discussed signs of fainting and how to make shrimp puffs."

"I was only upstairs for a short time yet you had time to talk about so much." Zi Xuan said clearly confused at the abrupt change in topic.

"He kept his cool under pressure. He was very respectable at all times. I think after your mother calms down you should do the respectable thing and introduce him to us properly."

"Wait a minute so what was that just now. With refusing to let us date and calling him my roommate. You're not upset anymore that it's a guy I'm dating."

"I wasn't upset to begin with. I think I was shocked and confused when I first found out. You have these mental imagines in your head of who your child will be when they become adults and who they will marry. You shattered my ideas about both of those. One by refusing to give up volleyball and the second by refusing to give up Yu Hao."

"I love them both too much for that."

"I did start to have thoughts at first that maybe it was my fault that my son liked men. Was it something that I did or something your mother did. Was it because we made you be with your sister a lot growing up or because we took volleyball away. All of those thoughts went through my head in the last two days."

"You didn't do anything wrong. I just fell in love. There was no rhyme or reason to it. My body found its soulmate. It doesn't matter who Yu Hao is. I just love him."

"I can see that now. I was just pulling your chain a few minutes ago. Were you scared i was going to force you apart. Fake out. Is that what you kids say nowadays? I like him. He seems like and ok guy. The short time I got to spend with him on Friday. I would like to get to know him better."

"Yes I understand As soon as possible." Zi Xuan promised.

His father patted him on the back and began to walk to the door. He turned and said. "Also don't you ever have him over to the house, when we are not here again. Your mother missed it because I blocked her but I saw more of my son then I wanted to. Don't do that again until you are married."

Zi Xuan face lost all color after that statement. His father casually walked out the door as if nothing happened.

Zi Xuan was so completely embarrassed. He knows that he won't be able to look his father in the face ever again. How can he eat at the same table with him knowing what he says he knows? Zi Xuan doesn't even want to know which part he saw. Any of it horrify. He won't let Yu Hao touch him every again. Zi Xuan got up to leave knowing he could never keep that promise.

Qian Ru came into the office before he could leave.

"I saw dad leave. What did he say?" Qian Ru asked eagerly.

"Nothing much." Zi Xuan mumbled. The only part that he seemed to remember was his father saying he might have seen him naked.

"Come on. You guys were here forever. Did he say something bad is that why you won't say?"

"Bad. Nothing Bad." Yes bad, he saw me and my boyfriend doing things.

"Did he say you have to breakup?" Qian Ru persisted.

"What breakup. No. He said that he understood me and he like Yu Hao." Zi Xuan clarified.

"Really congratulation Gē gē. I knew you could win over dad. How couldn't you, Dad is a push over. This is great news you should be smiling Gē gē you are halfway there. One parent down and one to go."

Just the thought of the conversation with his mom gave him hives. "Mom's is way harder than Dad Qian Ru."

"Piece of cake you got dad on your side so it's half done. I believe in you. Now I'm off to bed. I have school tomorrow and you and your boyfriend problems are stressing me out. Bye" Qian Ru made her exit.

Zi Xuan did feel some relief that one of his parents understand him. He wasn't kidding with his sister when he said that dad was the easier of the two parents. But with his father's unconditionally understanding of him even after he saw what he saw in the kitchen that means a lot to him.

Maybe just maybe everything will work out.

##########################################################################Monday morning rolled around and Zi Xuan didn't feel the need to rush off early for school since school was practically over for the seniors. He took his time getting ready and took his time planning to leave the house. Mostly in the hope that his mother would have already left for the day.

All weekend he had waited on pins and needles for his mother to confront him about their last conversation. The same as his father did the other day. Zi Xuan nerves has been taut waiting for the other shoe to fall.

He went to the kitchen to find some breakfast and found his mother alone in the kitchen at the counter drinking coffee.

He hesitated at the doorway unsure if he was really that hungry.

The one person he did and didn't want to see was now right in front of him. Will she get up and storm out as she has done for the past two days. Maybe he should be the one that leaves.

Zi Xuan stomach growled loudly.   Betrayer he thought as his mother looked up at the sound.  Apparently his hungry won't go away on its own.

He walked into the kitchen and grabbed a dumpling out of the refrigerator. He looked around hoping to see if anyone else was coming in for food. Knowing the answer to that since Qian Ru was in school and his father was at work.

His mother should have been somewhere as well since it was 930 Monday morning.

With her back to him she answered his unspoken questions. "No one else is eating. Your sister is at school and your father is at the office." she turned around and sat dishes on the table. "You can't just eat a dumpling for breakfast. Sit down and eat this."

She sat in the chair opposite of him and sipped her coffee. No one talked to end the awkwardness of the situation. He tried to shovel the food hurriedly in his mouth. Finally she spoke.

"Your father told me about your determination to become a coach even if you can't play. It's that determination that makes me weary about this. Will you be able to not play ever again? Seeing others play day in and day out may make you pick up the ball yourself."

Since that has happened before he has no comment.

"As your mother it will always be my need to prevent you from harm even harm done to yourself or by others but I seem to be the villain in this if I treat you like this."

"Mom I don't think you are a villain, I know you are like this because you care."

"I can't jump on the happy train like your father. I will watch and wait to see what will happen. It may take me awhile to go to one of your games again. I respect my son and am willing to trust that you are old enough to make your own mistakes."

"Thank you, that's all I ask."

"Even if i would rather you become a doctor or a lawyer. A stable job. Since your father approves I will hold it in. As for the other matter. I can't no I won't accept it."

"The other matter you mean Yu Hao."

"I really don't care what his name is. I am extremely disappointed in your choice of a partner. I had your life plan out since the day you were born. I became so happy when I found the wife that was perfect for you. You were going to have 2 kids one boy and one girl. My daughter in law and I would go shopping together and go out for tea.. Now I have to let that go because you choose him a man. I hope that this is a passing thing and you will forget about it by the time you are in college and away from him."

"Mom I am sorry I disappointed you. But it's my life not yours. This is not a phase and I won't forget him no matter what college I go to. Mom I really do love him. I found my better half in him and he makes me happy isn't that all that should matter."

"No your happiness is not all that matters. What is right is what matters and you two together are not right. Despite what your father says , Qian Ru say or you I refuse to let my son be with another man. Since I am going to pretend the last few days never happen. I will call Shi An Ni and you will go out with her."

"There is nothing wrong with me being with Yu Hao." Zi Xuan argued.

"I said don't say his name."

"Yu Hao, Yu Hao , Yu Hao." Zi Xuan said repeatedly

"Stop it." His mother covered her ears and ignored him.

"Just because you want to ignore who i love doesn't mean that I will. I understand you need time to accept us but you won't belittle what we feel. I won't go on a date with that young lady mom. " Zi Xuan argued.

"I don't care how you feel. You are young and inexperienced to the real world. You are too young to make important decisions like these for yourself. You will go on this date if you want to see your friends again. Otherwise you are no longer allowed to see him." his mother said.

"You won't let me date Yu Hao unless I go on a date with Shi An Ni." Zi Xuan asked.

"Yes." his mother replied.

"I guess I have no choice."

"Three dates."

"Three dates. No I'm not going on three dates with her. That would be leading her on and I have NO intention of pursuing this any further then the dates."

"If you just spend time with her you would fall in love with her. Like i did I'm sure of it Zi Xuan. Two dates and you will take this seriously and you will treat her like the lady she is."

"One date and only to prove to you that no matter how much you think me and her are suited. I will never ever fall for her. Also I was raised with manners I would never treat a lady bad. "

"Fine you can go on your one date. That's all she needs to win you over. I am positive she is the one for you. As for the other matter. I am not ready yet to meet him or talk about your junior. I don't think I will ever be ready to meet that young man officially. I can't just greet him with open arms yet."

"I understand but after this date you will leave me alone about blind dates and matchmaking. I have someone I love and I don't intend on leaving them."

"We will see. Finish your breakfast so that I can clean up."

***********************************************************************************************While some seniors were taking their makeup exams or trying to do extra credit work to help improve their grades. All other seniors were using this free time to clean out lockers, say goodbye to friends, making sure you have enough credits to pass, taking pictures with others, or find that one lost set of keys you misplaced from your first year of school.

"Ok we talked to the advisers picked up our gowns and signed everybody year book. Now talk. The suspense is killing me." Cheng En said pulling his chair closer to Xuan. Xiao Xiao also pulled her chair closer.

"So my father accepts that I don't want to let volleyball go and he forgives me for not telling him about it for a whole year."

"This is why I always liked your father. He is pretty awesome. It's the kind of father i want to be."

"Cheng En quiet. Your mother didn't approve of it i gathered?" Xiao Xiao said.

"She has reservation. Lots and lots of reservations. She will accept my decision for now. She just refuses to go to any games."

"I guess you are lucky she at least give you that much." Xiao Xiao replied.

"Yeah considering Xuan mom personality. This was the best outcome. But this is not interesting at all. Tell us about the juicy stuff." Xiao Xiao pinched Cheng En arm.

"Oche that hurt Xiao." He said rubbing the spot.

"Well my father accepts my relationship with Yu Hao he also wants to meet him and berated me for not having done it sooner."

"As he should. If you let them know about him sooner they could have adjusted to the situation." Cheng En stated.

"He knows what he did wrong Cheng. Don't lecture him about it now. It's too little too late for that anyway. Also stop me if i'm wrong but weren't you always the one stopping him from telling his parents about Yu Hao." Xiao Xiao asked.

"Me. I would never tell him such stupid advice like that. See how he ended up." Cheng En pointed out.

"Shut up Cheng. I'm trying to hear the rest of Xuan story. But your mouth is in the way." Xiao Xiao complained covering his mouth with her hand.

"My mother is very upset with me for choosing Yu Hao. We argued a little over it. She's at the point where she doesn't even want to hear his name. Won't acknowledge Yu Hao with open arms anytime soon."

"I had the same problem with Xiao Xiao family." Cheng En said.

"No you didn't" Xiao Xiao countered.

"Ok it wasn't as similar as Xuan but i saw the disappointment in their eyes when they talked about your future. They wanted their son-in-law to be that family friend guy that is always around. What's his name Toot, Turd or something?"

"His name is not turd Cheng En and you know it. It's Tong." Xiao Xiao said.

"Tong, Turd, they all sound the same. Anyway her family loves this guy so much even after we have been dating for a while they still call him son-in-law in front of me."

"That's because it's a habit." Xiao Xiao explained.

"Habit or not they are plainly saying this is who i want her to be with and not him. They are also probably hoping secretly you will break up with me when we go to college. But what they don't know is that I'm more handsome than any of the other guys in her life and too irresistible." Cheng En said confidently .

"That's why I stick around." Xiao Xiao agreed sarcastically.

"See she can't get enough of me. All i'm saying is it may take your mother years to accept the person you love and let their dreams for you go. Just wait and hope Yu Hao got tougher skin."

"My mom said that she will only allow me to see Yu hao if I go on a blind date. So I told her that I would."

"You did what?" Xiao Xiao asked shocked.

"She will only let me continue to date Yu Hao if i agreed to go on one date with the girl she choice."

"Wow and i thought your dad was a good negotiator. Your mom is the ultimate." Cheng En said.

"So will your mother respect your choice after that." Xiao Xiao asked.

"That's what she said." Zi Xuan replied.

"So how do you plan on making this girl hate you?" Xiao Xiao asked.

"I can't my mother told me I had better be on my best behavior. If I do anything to offend her she will add another date." Zi Xuan whined.

"See she is ruthless." Cheng En confirmed.

"So think of a boring date." Xiao Xiao stated.

"I was thinking of taking her to the movies this Wednesday."

"That's a good idea. Going in the middle of the work week tells her that the date isn't that special to give up the weekend for." Cheng En encouraged.

"Taking her to the movies also limits talking and interaction with her. Less chances to get to know her." Xiao Xiao said.

"I taught him well grasshopper. The student is now the teacher." Cheng En said bowing.

"I have to then take her to eat at my mother's approved restaurant and than i am taking her home."

"Also basic stuff i love it." Xiao Xiao said.

"Now how should I tell Yu Hao." Zi Xuan asked.

"What you can't tell Yu Hao."Cheng En replied.

"Yes he can" Xiao Xiao argued.

"No he can't Xiao." Cheng En stressed.

"No what do you mean by, no." Xiao Xiao asked.

"Xiao honey what do you mean yes. Do we not know what Yu Hao does to love rivals?" Cheng En stated.

"And hiding this from him gives the date more meaning then it should." Xiao Xiao stressed.

"He will ruin it which will make Xuan mother mad and make them have to go on several more dates." Cheng En pointed out.

"If I was to tell you that i was going on a blind date would you like to be told?" Xiao Xiao said.

"yes so that I can ruin any fool that looks at you." Cheng En replied.

"So why doesn't Yu Hao need the same respect. Because he can't fight his rival because it's a girl. There are so many things already stacked against him. The parents like her, she is a girl, they have a lot in common if we go by his mom. So it's no contest. He shouldn't even try. He should just give up on Xuan." Xiao Xiao protested.

"No that's not what i mean. Ultimately it's Xuan decision." Cheng En asked.

"I'm going to tell him. I feel that I should trust his input on this matter. I tried to handle it myself the last time and look how it turned out. This way at least i will have his help. "

"That's a good point." Xiao Xiao stated.

"Are you worried that he will act out?" Cheng En asked.

"No Yu Hao is a lot more mature than he seems." Zi Xuan said.

"Captain how did you do on your exam." a volleyball team member asked at the door of the classroom.

"My fans await." slapping Zi Xuan on the shoulder. "It will all work out." Cheng En walked out into the hall to greet the lower classman.

"Cheng En is wrong about one thing he said." Xiao Xiao said out of the blue.

" What is he wrong about?"

"I didn't choose him as my boyfriend because of his looks. Even if i do find them appealing now and again. The reason I'm with him is because he makes me laugh and he accepts me for who I am. All of me. Even my annoying side that makes him act out boys love scenes with his best friend. Our families may think they know what is best for us but they are not always right."

"I know Yu Hao makes me happy. He wasn't what I thought was going to be the partner of my heart but I'm glad he is."

"Tong is boring. He acts just like my dad. They have the same likes and hobbies. Which is why they get along so well. They stop trying to set me up with him months ago because they finally realize he could never make me happy. Your mother will eventually see that Yu Hao is your happiness. Chin up Xuan. This is the hardest part. Everything after this should be smooth sailing."

" Thanks Xiao."

"No problem. I got to go." Xiao Xiao got up and left the classroom.

Zi Xuan was processing everything that was said today when his phone rung.

"Hello"

"I am finished my classes for today. I brought one of my homemade meals filled with love. It's a new recipe and I'm dying to let you try it. Meet me on the roof in ten minutes." Yu Hao said.

"You must have read my mind. I wanted to talk to you today." Zi Xuan replied.

"Oh no that sounds bad. Why did you want to talk to me? Should I bring tissue? Are we going to be crying?" Yu Hao asked worriedly.

"It's noting that bad. I just miss you and wanted to see you."

"Ok I can be on the rooftop in five minutes."

"Instead of meeting on the roof meet me in the locker room in 15 I have to talk to coach first." Zi Xuan stated

"Ok. I will meet you there."

Yu Hao walked into the room the anticipation to see Zi Xuan was very high. He doesn't know what happened after he left Zi Xuan house on Friday night since he had to work all weekend. He had been so worried. He couldn't concentrate so he decided to cook to get his mind off of reality. The result was enough food to have him and his mother eating leftovers for two week.

Yu Hao came through the door and was pulled into a long deep kiss by his just as needy boyfriend.

"Well hello to you too." Yu Hao said with a smile through the kiss. After he was released he kissed Zi Xuan cheeks.

"I missed you." Zi Xuan responded.

"I can tell. I missed you as well. But baby I really need you to tell me about your parents. You kept me in the dark all weekend. It drove me nuts. I cooked so much this weekend because of the worry. I brought in some of it for lunch."

Yu Hao held up two lunch bags.

Zi Xuan calmly took the bags from Yu Hao hand and walked it over to the desk.

He unhurriedly walked back over to Yu Hao who was leaning on the closed door.  Zi Xuan face and chest got very, very close to Yu Hao and reached behind him to turn and lock the door.

"Why are you locking the door?" Yu Hao questioned with a raised eyebrow.

"I have to talk to you and I don't want to be disturbed." Zi Xuan whispered in Yu Hao ear.

Zi Xuan ran his hand down Yu Hao arm and grasps his hand. Entwining their fingers together and he raised a hand to his lips, kissing the back of it. "Come with me."

He led Yu Hao to the desk. They leaned/seat on the desk.

"Ok I'm a little nervous. This is either supposed to turn me on with all of your little touches. If that was your goal it's working. Or are you setting it up to tell me your parents won't accept us." Yu Hao asked

"Are my touches bothering you?" Zi Xuan asked instead of answering.

"Is the sky blue!" Yu Hao stated.

"I'm joking. Now serious time" Zi Xuan took a deep breath and began. "So I needed to talk to you about my parents. First off my father accepts our relationship without any problem."

"That's great news. What about your mother?" Yu Hao inquired.

"Well." Zi Xuan hesitated.

"It's ok Zi Xuan just tell me the truth." Yu Hao urged.

"My mom is fully against us. This may be a long siege ahead." Zi Xuan commented sadly.

"So are you grounded for life? Am I unable to see you again for a while? I mean with you graduating this will become harder if we can't see each other." Yu Hao complained.
