To use a skill, one needs to go through two steps - "alpha" and "beta". (Has been properly explained early in the story)

Rank 0 - [Front-Attack], [Mid-Attack], [Ranged-Attack], [Long Ranged-Attack], [Front-Defense], [Mid-Defense], [Ranged-Defense], [Evasive], [Low-Regenerative], [High-Regenerative], [Magic], [Spiritual], [Search], [Strategic], [Shape-Shifting], [Custom]

Ranked Skills are further subdivided into - [White], [Blue], [Red], [Yellow], [Purple] and [Black] with [White] ranked skills being the lowest quality and [Black] ranked skills being the highest quality.

Rank 0 Mages can only use Rank 0 Skills.

Rank 1 Mages can use both Rank 0 and Rank 1 Skills.

Rank 2 Mages can use Rank 0, Rank 1, and Rank 2 Skills.

And so on.
