The oldest memory he could recall was that of his mother lying in his arms, looking him with her big and always exicited green eyes. But something was different that day, for the first time in his short life, the boy witnessed them without his brightness and optimism that made him follow and admire that woman.
Blood flowed from her torso which had been impaled by an old rusty beam, her body trembled due to the injuries and the fear that came with the crippling felling of weakness that spread through her body.
-Survive...
Said the young woman with her short brown hair, while her lightly dark hand, passed through her son's face leaving blood marks.
The boy, who, looked like a small copy of the woman, cried everything that dehydration allowed him.
- I-I-I will ...
---------
A boy quickly opens his eyes due to near by movement from where he was, years of experience have taught him never to sleep too deeply.
His face was common and the only thing that highlighted him were the green eyes that contrasted with his dark skin and brown hair, and his height of 1.45 meters, which was quite high for his age.
He wore a clothes and a cloak with a hood, apparently made of rags and gray cloths which made him mix with the usual gray environment of the cave.
Quickly he started to climb the debris of old buildings and houses, due to the darkness of the huge artificial cave, which had been built just before the big invasion, the boy could not see much more than a few meters.
But he didn't need sight to know what was happening, soon voices could be heard from the place where he was resting a while ago.
-Ah...I'm hungry...how many pieces do we have so far?
Said the voice of a child who apparently had not even entered puberty.
-For the seventh time Maicon... we only have 3 pieces!
Said the angry voice of a girl
-That's it? this only give us a portion and a half!
Maicon spoke raising his voice, which was quickly followed by a harsh and angry whisper .
-Shut up, you two! You'll wake them up.
The conversation quickly broke out as the group looked among the pieces of rubble and other possible places that could serve as shelter.
Not long after, a strong sound of bodies struggling could be heard, the boy quickly focused his attention on where the sound came from. There he could see the young girl and another holding a boy not much older than him.
-We found one!
Said the ecstatic woman.
The other man who was also helping the search quickly approached the little boy.
-I will be quick kid, tell me where are your pieces and nothing else will happen to you.
The man said as he looked coldly at the kid who had now calmed down, but there was still a sad look on his face, apparently that seemed customary to him. He quickly pointed with his head to a small pile of debris not very different from the others. The man smiled while he got up and walked to the pile.
Moving a little he quickly found what he was looking for, 6 pieces of a dark opaque metal the size of a battery could be spotted. The man with a smile turned to the boy.
-You did well kid.
Quickly he picked up 4 pieces of metal leaving only 2 of the smallest pieces there, the man had a satisfied look as he called the rest of his group to look for more fragments of the unsuspecting young children. The kid who had just been robbed sighed and quickly got up and picked up the remaining pieces and ran to another location.
Seeing that they had left, the boy begins to descend from the pile of rubble where he was hiding, looking once again to the sides he begins to run in the same direction as the other child.
-The bastards from tunnel 8 always come at the same time...
While he was running and climbing among the already usual piles of garbage and debris, the boy was calculating all his small fortune he had accumulated during the years, in which, was already a great achievement for most of the people of that place, none of them having been correctly taught or something similar.
"I have 39 pieces hidden in the debris, 20 in the iron jungle, 56 in the residences and 13 with me... that's around 128 pieces... shit! I need at least triple that to get a pass! I'd have to work for 6 more years to get enough and by then I'd be summoned".
The boy furiously thought, untill he finally reached his destination, a small area of stone houses and tents that could be seen as a contract in that desert of debris, the space was not very big with only about 200 to 300 residences.
Placing his hood which he himself had sew up, he started to walk among the crowd of people getting closer and closer to a small but busier area.
Whoever could remember the ages before the big invasion would have recognized the vehicle as an old food truck and inside the food truck, was a bearded man wearing black clothes and a ragged cap.
Not wasting time, the boy began to pass among the people who were watching there own bags and hidden pockets to avoid possible thefts.
The man quickly collected the pieces that were extended to him while he delivered back small silver packages that seemed to be vacuum packed. The people quickly opened the package and devoured the almost liquid porridge that came out of the inside, and the little boy was no different, he quickly delivered the two pieces needed and swallow the whole thing, while taking advantage and wetting his lips a little.
Quickly he got out of there and started to mingle in the crowd of other people, making anyone who could be watching or stalking him give up immediately.
While walking he took the opportunity to think while still keeping an eye open for trouble.
"I won't make enought pieces in time if I keep circling around the iron jungle... as much as the big funeral is coming, it's only going to give me 20 pieces at most, I need to find a way to make 200 pieces in 3 years and that's almost impossible.... maybe I should just move on with that crazy plan?"
He thought as he passed through alleys and stones houses, until he reached a building that was already familiar to him, leaning on certain pieces of empty stones he began to climb like a spider the path already known, when he reached the top he threw himself on the roof and already leaning on the place where he knew he would not fall.
He looked at the dark place which was illuminated by the light of the city and some remote lights coming from the debris, while enjoying the horizon, but his focus was on the big wooden gate which covered a huge hole. That was the way the merchants would go to exchange the pieces, for food, with the managers. As much most cities were underground, the quality of life in the cities that were getting closer and closer to the surface, improved, not by much, but even better than the hell hole where he was.
His gaze shifted to the desert of boulders that covered most of the artificial cave, in the midst of all these boulders, there were ancient tunnels, made from failed attempts to mine pieces, but this made it possible for several people to come together in groups to defend them and enjoy the benefit of being able to really sleep.
It was also where most gangs kept their stocks of pieces, which could easily reach hundreds, or even thousands if they were saved properly.
The boy looked intensely at the place where Tunnel 8 was located, which was relatively a group without many intrigues, except for the troublemakers of Tunnel 6, but this conflict had already been solved.
The plan kept appearing in his head and how he could be executed, but breaking his reasoning the gates open and from there about 70 men and women start walking towards the city.
You could see that the big weapons they carried were worn out, the iron plates that were placed in vital places for protection were covered with small cracks and scratches, but what stood out most was the color of his skin, an intense dark green paint covered most of their bodies.-uhm? Are the goblins back yet? Isn't that too soon?
Says the boy without much concern, while the dreaded goblins returned from another ambush.
-Today we hited a gold mine!
Shouted the commander of the goblins along with his lackeys while the city shouted back, congratulating their return, behind the goblins it was possible to see a huge wagon pulled by a single goblins, which should be impossible. Noises of pieces hitting each other could be heard all over the cave, coming from inside the wagon, looking at this, the boy who was on top of the building smiled for the first time in a long time.
