3. That Night...

They had all settled into bed with thick blankets on their windows. Luanne jolted out of bed suddenly. She jumped so high that she startled Mitch and woke him up.

"What is it?" he asked still half in slumber.

"I heard a noise," she hissed, trying to remain quiet.

There was a muffled pound that came from downstairs. Mitch was suddenly wide awake. He sat up straight and silent. Luanne looked at him horrified. They were nowhere near civilization. If it was a burglar there was no way the authorities would get there on time!

"I'll go check it out," Mitch said. His jaw was firmly set. He tried to get up from the bed quietly. Unfortunately, the moment he put weight on his feet; the floor board creaked. He lifted his foot off the floor instantly; the creak had scared him. He had a nagging thought in the back of his mind. He refused to let the thought surface.

As he walked down the stairs Luanne followed directly behind him. He could feel the warmth of her body as they tip-toed down the stairs. He looked around the Kitchen and the living room, but didn't see anything. No one-was in the house it, seamed.

A noise suddenly came from outside. It was the same muffled pound they had heard earlier. Luanne gripped Mitch's arm. He held her hand, hoping against hope the sound wouldn't happen again. But it did.

"Go see what it is," Luanne whispered sharply.

"Okay, Mitch said. "Don't worry; it was probably just a bear or something." Luanne saw the baseball bat that her son had left out. She grabbed it and thrust it

at Mitch. "Take this," she said. "I'll be right behind you."

"No," Mitch said. "I'll go. Stay in here. It's probably nothing to worry about."

"Okay," she agreed.

Mitch gripped the bat with all his might as he peered into the darkness that surrounded his brightly lit yard. The lights made the shadows on the grey trees seem more sinister than they might have originally been. Suddenly something bright green flashed in the light for a moment and disappeared quickly into the trees.

No! thought Mitch. There's no way this can be happening! That's right! …Yeah. It's all in my head. There was nothing there. Okay now I'll go tell-

Something suddenly gripped the back of Mitch's shirt. Luanne was there. "Did you see that?" she cried. "It was green!" she looked at Mitch and saw the horror on his face. "I'm not saying it was that. I'm just saying something was out there."

Oh no! She had seen it. She saw! What am I going to do now!? Luanne was in front of him now. He still held the bat firmly.

"No Luanne," he said firmly. "We don't know what it was… Maybe we scared it off already."

"I know," she replied looking back at him. She had always been brave. But now was not the time to be brave. Now was the time to run inside and cower until day light came. She got closer to the tree line. And suddenly she was gone. Something had pulled her into the darkness of the trees.

"Mitch!" he heard her cry. He immediately abandoned his fear of insanity and began to run toward the sound of her voice. The moment he reached the tree line it grabbed him. The bat was yanked from his arm and he was knocked unconscious.
