New World, New Life

???: "Yagami-kun, could you spare a second?"

Of course, I had already expected her to come to talk to me, however, I was expecting her to come sooner.

That's why when she spoke, she snapped me out of my thoughts and I immediately paid all of my attention to her.

Light: "Yes, do you need help with anything?"

The student I was talking to was my neighbor, Horikita Suzune.

Horikita: "To be honest, I didn't expect you to be so compliant."

Light: "Well, I try to not ignore people when they require assistance. Besides what else would I do? Pretend to be asleep and hope you would go away?"

Horikita: "If you had decided to do that or plan to do that in the future, you should know misfortune may come your way."

Light: "What kind of misfortune?"

Of course, I already knew what Horikita was referring to.

Horikita: "Well, it would be a shame if there were many thumbtacks randomly placed on your chair or if the needle on my compass somehow found its way to your arm."

Light: "Yea, that would be really bad luck. So anyways what did you need help with?"

I may be getting too far ahead, let me recount a bit of the event that took place before today.

Two Months Ago

I was riding on a bus that would lead me to my new life. Many of the other people on the bus were wearing the exact same uniform as me, but there were still other passengers that were just trying to get to their job.

Modern-day Japan, right? This Japan is truly a ton more technologically advanced than the one I was in.

I was mainly thinking about the new school I would go to. Of course in my previous life, I would often be talking with my classmates and I may even be referred to as one of the "popular" kids. But, that was before I picked up the Death Note.

As I was thinking about that, I suddenly heard a conversation that immediately got my attention.

"Don't you think you should give up your seat?"

I saw a lady scolding a blonde-haired, young man who was sitting in the priority seat.

It seems like the blonde-haired man won't give up his seat to an elderly lady.

"Can't you see this old woman is having trouble standing?"

This conversation seemed to have also gotten the attention of everyone on the bus.

"That's a crazy question, lady."

The blonde-haired man responded, with a smile on his face.

"Why should I, a young man, give up my seat to an elderly woman?"

"Isn't it only natural to give up your seat to the elderly?"

"I don't understand, priority seats are just priority seats, I ultimately decide whether or not I move. As of right now, I have decided to not move."

That was an interesting way of thinking, especially from a high school student.

"I am a healthy young man and I would have no trouble standing up, but standing up consumes more physical strength than sitting does. There is no reason to give up my seat."

At that point, it seemed that the blonde-haired man won, however, it appears I was mistaken.

"Um...I also think the lady is right."

"Hoho, I seem to be attracting many women today, and this time a pretty girl."

Unexpectedly, someone decided to voice their opinion on the situation. She also wore the same uniform as me and other students on the bus.

"This old lady seems to have trouble standing. Won't you give up your seat? If you do that you will be contributing to society."

This conversation seems to be going nowhere. I can easily tell the blond-haired man has a huge ego, he also appears to be a narcissist because of the way he refers to himself as a "healthy young man" and the way he acts. I decide to step in before the conflict escalates further.

Light: "Hey, you can have my seat."

This got the attention of everyone on the bus and I immediately felt their gazes on me.

"Thank you so much!"

The student who sided with the old woman said.

That was the right decision to make, had I voiced my opinion as well, we would have gotten nowhere with the problem.

I wonder, had I still had the Death Note, would I have killed the blond-haired man?

As I had thought about that, the bus came to a stop.

In front of me was the entrance to the school. Many students were entering the school.

My new school 'Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing School' was created by the Japanese Government to shape students into leaders that would eventually lead the next generation.

As I was making my way to the entrance, I was suddenly stopped in my tracks by a girl.

???: "Wait!"

Light: "Yes, do you need something?"

???: "You were looking at me. Why?"

I looked at her a second time and I remember glancing at her before I gave up my seat on the bus. I was trying to see if anybody else would give up their seat first.

Light: "I wanted to make sure nobody else was going to give up their seat for the elderly lady."

???: "Are you the type of person to try to make a good impression?"

Light: "No, I just knew that the conflict would lead nowhere. I resolved it quickly by giving up my seat."

The girl seemed to be thinking about something.

Light: "Besides, you didn't give up your seat like the other people on the bus."

???: "Don't compare me to them. I didn't find it necessary to give up my seat."

Honestly, at this rate, it would've been better to have the Death Note in this world...wait, no. I can't think like that-

???: "Well, I'm leaving, I don't want to waste my time speaking to you."

Anyways, she seemed like a smart person, however her thought process will be her downfall if she doesn't fix it.

The entrance ceremony was completely boring and a waste of my time. However, the one thing that interested me was the student council, unlike normal high schools, this student council seemed to play a huge role in the school. The student council president, Horikita Manabu, interested me as well, perhaps he can be an ally in the future or an enemy...

(Timeskip)

I walked inside the classroom, Class D, to be more precise. A few students were already there, either talking or doing their own thing.

I walked to my desk which I could easily identify since it had my name on it. It was located at the back, near the window, a place to go unnoticed.

I sat down and looked out the window, but was immediately disturbed.

???: "What an unpleasant coincidence."

The girl that stopped me earlier, was sitting next to me, with a stoic expression.

This is gonna be an interesting year...
