When Jiang Chi came back in the evening, Gu Xiang was cutting fruit in the kitchen. He didn't know if it was just him, but it seemed that whenever she was there, his house felt livelier. Even the lights seemed a lot brighter.

He walked in, stood by the kitchen door, watched her cut the mango into pieces, and said, "I saw your mother at the hospital today."

Jiang Chi said, "Her friend was admitted to the hospital and she went to visit him. Is he your relative?"

Gu Xiang said, "Just a friend of my mother's who often plays mahjong with her. A woman I don't like very much."

The reason Gu Xiang disliked that woman was because she would always grab her at every opportunity and ask her, "Gu Xiang, do you think your current father is better than your previous father?"
