The Return

"We need to talk." She hastily uttered and without waiting for Rubin's response, dragged him along.

"Hey!" Laura muttered, "Come on Alexis–" She threw her hands dramatically in the air. Her anxiety almost made her forgot that she merely existed. "Who am I even talking to?" She snarled and went after them.

Rubin on the other hand, knew without being told what he was in for but then, this wasn't the time. They were both going to get it hard from Mr. Hooks if they should get to class late.

"Hold on Alexis." He instinctively snatched his hand from her, stopping in his tracks. "I know what this is about but trust me, this isn't the time. Alright." He sighed, pausing for some seconds. "How about we meet on the rooftop during break? I promise to tell you everything you want to know."

Alexis wore a sceptical look, staring densely at Rubin as she brooded on whether to believe him or not. "Come on Alexis." Rubin interrupted her thought, swiftly glancing on his watch. "I believe Mr. Hooks will be in class by now."

Laura just stood beside Rubin staying invisible as she was, staring from Rubin to Alexis. She looked quite emotional, seeing her friend for the first time in a long while. Rubin noticed but played dumb, allowing her some space.

"Okay." Alexis finally agreed and Rubin in turn let out an inaudible sigh. "I'm holding you on your words." She seized him up and strolled off.

"This is so like her." Laura sniffed back her tears with a slight giggle, wiping her tears with her hand. "Are you sure you want to do this? She glanced at Rubin. "She might not believe you, you know?"

"Well, you should leave that for me to brood about. Right now, I have a class to catch." He hastily muttered and speed off. Laura scoffed and raced after him.

The entire hallway was empty and quiet with everyone in their classrooms. Rubin for a second wished he had some supernatural powers to just teleport himself to his class.

"Mr. Hooks is really going to descend hard on me." He lamented. Laura for a bit, felt bad for him but said nothing.

After a few strolls, they finally got to the class. He was a little surprise when they got there to find it in rumpus. He deftly glanced at Laura, before walking in. Alexis was the first to set eyes on him when he walked in but turned away, being a bit hostile, unconsciously starting to hate boys for what they had done to her friend. Not to talk of this new student acting like he knows all. Little did she know that he was actually her desk mate.

"Hi" Rubin muttered with a smile on getting to the desk and he received a glare for that. "Woow," Laura mumbled and Rubin swiftly glanced at her. "That could kill a cat." She added with a grin. Rubin slightly shook his head and settle down, hanging his bag on the chair. Just then, the teacher sauntered in. "Settle down everyone." He uttered, placing his books on the table as he took his stand in front of the class. "Good morning to you all."

"Good morning Sir." They chorused.

"Alright. First and foremost, I'm sorry for being late but before we start the class, there are some people we have to welcome back. Come in Ben."

Alexis eyes instinctively flew wide opened as a flush crept up her face at the mention of the name Ben. The rest of the class on the other hand, broke into rumpus with the exception of Rubin who knew not what was going on. From the corners of his eyes, he noticed Laura flared up as Ben and two other boys glided in. The once lovely and cheesy girl totally transformed.

Just as Ben and the other boys which he heard from the students as Fred and Patrick took their stand in front of the class, he saw the teacher's chair slowly lifting up. He lurked around and saw no one had noticed yet. Out of apprehension, he deftly glanced at Laura with panic written all over his face. "What are you doing?" He grumbled, holding her hand in the process.

All the anger and hatred suddenly disappeared from her face the moment he felt his touch, making the chair slammed to it's position. She stared at his face then to their hand. She felt tears welled up her eyes as everything that happened came back to her. "I'm sorry Rubin." She grumbled and rushed out of the class.

"Hey..." He whispered but she was already gone. He had wanted to go after her but that would have brought everybody's attention to him. He gazed back at Alexis stunned face then to the boys in front of the class. Nothing seemed to make up for him. "Why are they acting weird?" He thought to himself.

"So let's all welcome them back. " The teacher's voice interrupted his thought. "They've been away for a while now. Help them cover up from where they left." He added. "You guys can take your seat now." He said to Ben and they sauntered off to their seats. They looked totally indifferent. Like nothing even happened. They came eye to eye with Alexis as they shot a glare at her, settling in their desks. Rubin noticed and nudged her. "Are you okay?" He questioned but Alexis wasn't ready to explain things. "I'm okay." She replied as she turned her gaze back to the board.

"So where did we end the last time?" Mr. Hooks required as he opened his textbook. The rest of the hour past with students and teacher getting interruptive with the lesson. But Alexis on the other hand was more or less lost in it all.

Krriinnggg....

The bell finally rang for break. Mr. Hooks bid his farewell and sauntered out of the class. Alexis was the first to sprang up after. "Will be waiting for you." She uttered coldly to Rubin before rushing out of the class. He stared at her back as it faded through the corner of the door before springing up from his seat. He lurked around but saw Laura no where around. "Where could she be?" He thought.
