Cyan eyes flicked back and forth across the page of the small book in her grasp. Her brows were narrowed in concentration almost as if she was having a hard time understanding what she was reading. Her ears were tight against her head as if it helped her reading, but twitched every once in a while at a sound outside the room.
Her midnight black hair had grown with age and they had decided to let her keep it long, so it was now down to her mid-back with a wavy spring. Her ears seemed to be a little more pointed than when she was a newborn and the color on them seemed a little bolder. From the inner corner of her eyes and attached to the black around her eyes, a short pointed line went down along the sides of her nose, giving her face a more fox-like appearance. If she were to open her mouth, you would notice that her k-9 teeth were much sharper than normal human teeth. At the end of her fingertips were dainty, yet sharp claws. Her tail now was much longer, reaching to the back of her calves, and the fur was now bold and fluffy.
Oncoming footsteps caused those ears to swivel forward and she muttered to herself, "Master Kanda?" When the Master entered the room, she smiled to herself, "I was right!"
"Right about what?" He came over to sit across from her in a different chair.
"I was listening to your footsteps and I wanted to guess if it was you, Ms. Aiko, or Master Takao." She informed him with child exuberance.
"Oh? And how did you guess?" He asked and actually looked interested in her answer.
"Your steps are softer than Master Takao, but longer than Ms. Aiko." She twitched her ears a couple of times.
Placing his palm between her ears to give her a soft rub, he gave her a soft smile, "Very good, Myobu." He pulled back to cross his one leg over the other, "I have some news for you, Myobu…" At her curious look, he continued, "Your name is going to change from today on."
"A new name?" She tilted her head in confusion, "But I like my name."
"I know and I do too, but in order to start your training, we need to forget that name." His voice was delicate, yet left no room for argument, "Since your quirk is developing, it is time to start working with it."
"Oh." Sounding dejected a little, she looked over to the several framed pictures on the wall that showed her Masters with several Pro Heroes, "Will I become like them?"
Following his line of sight, he let his own eyes roam over the pictures of his past, "Yes and our hope is that you'll be even better than them."
"Better than them?" She let her gaze linger on a picture of a hero she remembered being called Endeavor, "I want to be better than them." She looked down at the little book in her hands that was closed now, "What is my new name going to be?"
"Kit will be your new name." He briefed her.
"Kit?" She let the short and simple name roll off her tongue, "It is short for Kitsune?"
"You are very correct." He gave a small chuckle, "You've always been a smart little girl, My--- Kit."
"I am a fox after all." She flipped her tail a couple of times as emphasis, "So, I guess I like it."
"I hope you do." He said honestly.
She looked over at him and after a second, she gave him a bright smile, "I wanna be a hero!"
"And you will be, Kit." A beeping sound disrupted their conversation and he pulled out a phone to look at the screen, "It seems as if Master Takao is almost back from Kyushu." He used his finger to scroll through the message for several moments, "Oh, and it sounds as if he has someone with him that he wishes for you to meet."
"Someone for me to meet?" Kit asked, her voice almost shrill.
"Mhm… Calm yourself." He gave another hearty chuckle as he stood from his seat, "How about we practice your illusionary magic and go greet them in your complete human form?" He slipped his phone back into his pocket, "Are you able to do that, Kit?"
"I think so." She scooted from her seat and stood up, "I'll try." Going over to put the book back on the shelf, she closed her eyes in concentration.
Nothing happened for the first few ticks of time, but soon her body began to glow a matching cyan to her eye color. One by one, her ears, tail, fangs, and claws disappeared. Her eyes opened as her face scrunched up, trying to complete the transformation. Giving up, the only thing that stayed the same was the lining around her eyes and the cat-like pupils within her irises.
She only manifested her quirk a couple of months before and her Masters always told her that she was a good investment with how quickly she was learning. Whatever that meant.
"Very good, Kit." He looked over her form, "You're getting faster at it, that is for sure." He knelt down in front of her, looking over her eyes, "We'll have to continue to work on it though so your eyes can change too."
"I don't know why it is so hard to change them." Her nose scrunched up a little in disappointment, "I'm sorry, Master Kanda."
He straightened up and placed a hand on her head again to give her little affectionate rub, "We'll get you there and you'll be able to do the complete transformation within a blink of an eye." He removed his hand and began to walk from the room, "Let's go see who Master Takao has with him, hm?"
She watched after him for a moment before skipping to catch up with him, excited about meeting someone new. It wasn't as if she didn't meet new people all the time since Master Kanda and Master Takao always had meetings with important looking people. But this was the first time that they wanted her specifically to meet someone.
Trailing after Kanda to the front of the house, they both watched as a familiar black car pulled into the driveway. Kanda held the gate open for her just as Master Takao stepped out of the driver's seat to turn and open the back door directly behind it.
She could hear that he was saying something softly, but couldn't understand anything. There was no movement for a minute until she finally saw a set of black boots poke out from under the car door to land on the gravel driveway. Once the boots moved out of the way, Takao shut the back door and Kit nearly bounced in place at the sight of a kid that looked to be around the same age as her.
His hair was a feathery golden sand color that almost looked as if he woke and only pushed it back with a few rebellious strands sticking out. Thick lashes lined golden amber colored eyes and the pupil shape within them reminded her of her own. On the bottom inner corner of his eyes was a triangular shaped black mark that even for a kid gave him a predatory look. But what grabbed her attention the most about this boy was the bright red wings protruding from his back.
After observing him, Kit noticed that he seemed to be doing the same to her, causing her nerves to get the best of her. Her hand reached out to grip the pant leg of Kanda who looked down at her with a mix of curiosity and amusement.
Takao used a hand on the back of the boy's head to lead him close to them, "Hawks," He removed his hand from his head to motion to Kanda, "This is Kanda Osamu. He will be your tutor for general studies while you're here with us."
Kanda gave the boy a kind look, "It is nice to meet you, Hawks." He placed a hand on top of Kit's head, "This is Kit and she will be learning and training right beside you."
Both of the kids gave each other another look over as if trying to size each other up. Kit knew that if her fox features were showing, her tail would be twitching wildly with her ears laying back, but she couldn't help but notice that the boy seemed to be wary of her. Because of this, she let her eyes drop to the ground between them as she gripped the fabric between her fingers that much tighter, trying to seem as non-threatening and small as possible.
"Are you going to train her to become a special hero too, Master Takao?" The boy's voice almost startled her as she looked back up to the citrine eyes that were looking up at Master Takao rather than her now.
"Yes, she will be training right along with you." He gave the child a nod.
Hawks looked back over at her, his eyes judging her, "But she doesn't look like anything special. What kind of quirk does she have?"
Kit let out a silent huff, but Kanda's chuckle had her looking up at him, "Kit actually has a mutation quirk just like you." He motioned to the boy's wings, "But she doesn't have wings and with her quirk she can hide her features."
He looked up at the light haired male before looking at Kit once again, "Really?" At the man's nod, he tilted his head in an inquisitive way, "Can I see?"
Kit watched for one of them to give her permission and when she got it in the form of Kanda sending her an affirmative nod, she closed her eyes. With another small glow of her body, her fox features appeared in place, showing her twitching tail and attentive ears. Dispelling her illusions was nothing compared to actually applying them.
Hawks' eyes became dramatically large, "That's so cool! You're a fox!"
She could feel her cheeks heat up at the attention, "I like your wings."
His smile nearly took up his entire face as he flexed his wings out wide, "They make me super, super fast!"
Both adults seemed satisfied with the change in attitude of the kids and Kanda looked over to Takao, "We have some things to go over before dinner." He looked back down at the twitching fox child, "How about you show Hawks around the grounds until dinner. This is his new home now, so he will need to know where things are." He looked at Hawks then, "We'll show you to your room after dinner."
"I can do that." Kit beamed up at her caretakers before grabbing Hawks' hand to pull him through the gate, "Come on! There is a lot to see before dinner."
Looking back at him for a second to make sure he wasn't stumbling, she noticed he was looking at the connected hands. Blinking, she wondered why he looked nervous of their contact. Has he never held hands with anyone before? She hadn't really either, but she had read picture books where friends held hands as they walked around.
Slowing down to a walk, Kit watched as Hawks seemed to notice the change in pace and looked around before looking at her. His cheeks were a little flushed and Kit couldn't help but find him cute.
"So, this is…" Kit began to show him the outside of the house and where things were located.
He seemed interested for the most part, his eyes very attentive to what he was being shown. She took him inside after showing most of the outside, but as soon as she was done with that, she took him out to the private gardens that you couldn't reach but from a door within the house.
He was pulled along towards a massive tree where the roots had risen from the ground, creating a little room under the main trunk, "And this is my den! It's my favorite place."
"Why?" He asked simply.
Pausing, she looked into the small space only to let go of his hand to crawl inside, "Because I can come in here all by myself and neither Master Kanda or Master Takao can fit." She turned to sit and face the entrance, "You want to come in? I'll share my den with you."
He looked unsure at first, but tucked his wings in as he got onto his hands and knees to crawl in too, "I have to be careful with my wings since there isn't much room in here." He sat opposite of her and looked around, "What do you do in here though? There isn't anything in here."
"Oh, I'll show you." She pulled out a small ball the size of a golf ball, "I play with this."
He eyed the ball, "That's it? Isn't it boring?"
Pouting, Kit shook her head as she palmed the small globe, "No, it's not."
She held the ball in her palm before closing her eyes. As soon as she did, the ball began to glow and grow in size right before Hawks' eyes. Once it reached the size of a small kick ball, she opened her eyes again and the glowing faded, "Normally I make it smaller and I just throw it up in the air."
His gaze was locked onto the ball still, "Does it actually feel big?"
"Here…" She rolled the ball his way.
He quickly splayed his legs out in a 'v' before the ball could reach him and then caught it as it got close, "Wow, it doesn't feel small or anything… It feels normal." He looked up at her again before passing the ball back, "Can you do that to anything?"
"Um, I'm not sure… I can do it to a lot of things, but the bigger they are, the harder it is. Or if I make it too big or too small from its normal size, it becomes more difficult." She caught the ball, "I haven't tried it on people." She passed the ball back as she eyed his bright wings, "Can you carry people when you fly?"
"Eh," He spread his wings as best as he could with the small amount of space he had to work with, "I can pick up small kids and animals." He lowered his wings again, but the feathers seemed to get brighter in color before detaching and swirled around him, "But I can do this."
"Ooo!" Kit's eyes sparkled as she watched the show of dancing feathers.
They both grew quiet as they watched the feathers before he returned them to attach to his wings, "Hey," He ran a finger along the dirt, "They said I had to get a new name. Did you have to get a new name?"
"Yeah," Kit bobbed her head, "I just got it today." She looked over at him as he continued to run his fingers through the loose dirt, "What was your old name?"
"Takami Keigo." He replied after a few moments, "What was yours?"
"Kanda Myobu." She answered as she reached over to pick up the ball.
"Kanda? Like Master Kanda?" He watched as she shrunk the ball back to its normal size.
"Yeah, but we're not related." Rolling the ball in her palm, she sighed, "I was adopted as a baby and they had to give me a name so they could bring me home. Master Kanda let me borrow his last name until now."
"Oh." He watched her as she put the ball back into her pocket, "I like your name, but Kit doesn't sound bad."
"I like your name too." Kit gave him a bright smile, "Though Hawks matches what you look like."
He hummed, "Are Master Kanda and Master Takao nice?"
Kit's face gave way to a thoughtful look, "Master Kanda is nice until he gets irritated about something." She brought her tail over into her lap so she could run her small claws through the fur, "Master Takao… He isn't mean, but I wouldn't call him nice." She put a finger up, "They're opposites of each other."
"Are you and the masters the only ones living here?" He asked next.
"No, we have a maid named Aiko." She began to crawl out from under the tree, "Speaking of Aiko, it should just about be dinner time."
Crawling out after her, Hawks stuck close to her as she led him to the house, "Is her food good?"
Oh, yeah!" Kit looked over her shoulder at him as she took off her shoes in the genkan, "I don't think she has ever made anything I didn't like… except for mushrooms." She made a face before handing him some slippers for the house, "If you tell her your favorite food, she'll make sure to make it for you every once in a while."
"Mmm, I like chicken!" He threw a fist in the air, "Anything with chicken!"
She couldn't help but giggle at his enthusiasm as she led him through the halls, "She makes a lot of stuff with chicken, so I think you'll be very happy with her cooking."
He then asked, "What kind of food do you like?"
She shrugged, "I'm not that picky, but I love yakitori."
"Mm, I love yakitori too." He gave a broad smile, "It's chicken!"
Kit came to a stop outside of a door and then looked back with a questioning look, "Isn't it kinda funny that you like to eat birds when you are a bird?"
Hawks blinked at her, and then narrowed his eyes playfully at her, "I might be a bird, but I'm a Hawk. We are carnivores!"
The both shared a look for a moment, and then proceeded to laugh as Kit opened the door to the dining room, where both Kanda and Takao eyed them with raised brows.
