Chapter 39

Anastasia did something along with Avery that night. They mixed a potion that would protect Scarlett for at least more than a year.

Anastasia had made it herself two years ago. Since it was for a human, she had to dilute it a lot but it was still strong.

Two days later, Scarlett was set to leave for City A. Her team had rented an SUV to travel there. Before she left, Anastasia kept talking to her.

"Don't talk to suspicious strangers, okay? Just in case if they keep talking to you, give them bland answers and if they don't stop, just yell at them."

"Okay."

"Also be careful, don't go roaming around in a suspicious part."

"I know! I'm not a little kid. Can you stop being a mother hen?"

"Nah. Also, if you see one of your ex-boyfriends and he tries to talk to you, use this."

She took out a taser from her pocket and turned it on. Scarlett flinched when it made weird noises.

She shoved it into Scarlett's bag. "Okay, you're ready to go!"

On the way, Scarlett's team blasted music and sang along. They shared food with each other, made jokes, mocked their seniors, and talked about their lives.

Bee spoke, she was one of the nurses that help Scarlett. "Hey, can we play truth or dare?" They called her Bee because she had a long ass name.

"Yup."

"Okay."

"Yes."

"Alright who's first?"

Scarlett raised her hand. "I'd love to."

"Okay then, truth or dare miss Scarlett?"

"Truth."

"Okay, do you have someone in your heart right now?"

At that question, Anastasia came into her mind and Scarlett's heart skipped a beat. She felt blood creeping up her cheeks, and she internally shook her head. "Well, no. Not right now."

"Alright then! Levi! Truth or dare?" Levi was another surgeon, to be more precise, a surgeon in training. Scarlett was his senior and mentor.

Levi thought for a few seconds and answered. "Dare."

"Okay then! I dare you to… call your dad!"

"That's it? Siri, call my dad."

Siri: okay, calling my daddy.

"No, no no-"

And someone's phone rung in the car. Precisely from the front seat. Even more precise from the driver's seat.

Everyone's jaw dropped, Levi and Fox (the dude who's driving, he also had a long ass name) blushed like crazy.

(Yup I used the meme. *Hippity hoppity bye bye.)

To make the entire situation better, Scarlett spoke. "Well at least we know why there wasn't another gay person in the other teams! We got the lot to ourselves!"

She mentally slapped herself for making it even worse. Then she thought this would make it better. "Wait we know Avery's team and the bitch's team. If we know two gay people are in our team, then where's the third one?"

(It's you bish)

"I'll try to sniff out the third one by myself." Scarlett promised.

"Scarlett you're such a fujoshi!"

"I know and stop making the situation worser, Bee!"

Bee smiled. "Sorry. Anyway, a few days ago I just saw a girl love movie. Now I read the manhwa and then I saw the movie. To be honest it was kind of cute. Both of them were polar opposites in life yet fit so well!"

Luke, another surgeon in training, replied. "That's cute. Can I play my songs now?"

"Sure."

The entire ride, Scarlett took a nap because the songs Luke had played were calming and relaxing. After an hour or so, the SUV stopped at a hotel, jerking everyone awake. Fox got off to check if it was full or not.

Five minutes later, he opened the car door and asked. "They're saying some rooms would be free after an hour since they would check out soon. Should we go eat and roam around for a while?"

"Okay."

"That would be great."

"I'm hungry anyway."

Fox nodded. "I'll let them know."

(Timeskip: after a few days at four AM)

It was the day when Scarlett was going to do the surgery. She had talked to the patient's family a few minutes ago and she had to talk to the patient.

Scarlett opened the door of the room where the patient was residing in. "Hi Zoe."

Zoe turned around and smiled. "Hello there doctor."

"How do you feel?"

"I'm nervous."

Scarlett held her hands. "It's okay alright. You'd be feeling a little nervous for a while. I'm nervous as well."

"Yeah, your hands are cold."

"Yeah. I'm panicking right now. It's okay I feel like that sometimes. I'll be fine." She reassured her but inside she was having a million thoughts.

Yeah. I have developed a fear of fear of failing. I fear because of my mistakes I kill you just like the last one.

But I don't want to fail you. I have promised your family that you would come back to them like a normal person without a tumor.

The door opened and Luke popped in with a surgical mask and clothes on. "It's time."

Scarlett nodded and turned to Zoe. "Are you ready?"

"I am."

"Okay then. Lay down on the bed outside, you'll meet me again in the surgical room."

Zoe nodded and laid down on the bed. A few more people came in to wheel the bed into the surgery room.

On the way, Zoe's family came up to Scarlett. They shared their gratitude about how she was willing to make their family's life easier.

"Thank you doctor, that you're going to save her life."

She blinked and hesitantly nodded. She forced a smile on her and left. They trusted her, they trusted their family member would see them again.

There was a tiny voice in her head saying she'll fail the surgery. She would kill Zoe because of her mistakes. Just like the last patient.

She slowly opened the surgical room and saw Zoe was being injected with anesthetic and sedatives. Suddenly she felt her breakfast come up

She ran to the nearest restroom and opened one of the toilet cubicles. She threw up for a good five minutes and flushed it when she was done. She stood up and felt hot tears spilling down her cheeks.

Why was she crying? She shouldn't be crying while a patient is going to be operated on soon.

To be honest she didn't want to go back there. She'd mess up, she'd end another life in her hands.

She took out her phone and did what she felt was the right thing; calling Anastasia.

The phone rang for a few seconds and then she heard a muffled hello from the other side of the call.

Hearing her voice, Scarlett again started tearing up. Anastasia sat up fully awake and asked. "Hey hey hey! Why are you crying? Did something happen?"

"I'm so sorry for calling you right now."

"No no no, it's okay. What happened? Tell me."

Scarlett sniffed. "We are going to do the surgery right now and I don't, I don't feel I can do this. I feel like I'll kill my patient like the last time. I'll make a mistake."

"Whoa whoa! Slow down! Why do you think that you'll make a mistake?"

"I don't know, I'll feel like I'll do it."

"Look, for the past three-four months, I've seen you go to your old college to meet your professors and seniors to look for advice.

"You have been working hard for a long time and there's no way you'll make a mistake. It's just your anxiety, don't worry.

"You won't make a mistake. There's no way you'll fuck this up. Now go out there and remove that tumor!"

"Mmm bye."

"Bye!"
