The girls went to their classes as usual and were joined by Jake for history. Zara had a warm fuzzy feeling in her heart whenever she saw him. His smile reached his eyes whenever he looked at her.
She was finally beginning to understand what it was to be in a relationship with someone who liked you. Maybe, she could be with him? Maybe her habit of shunning people from getting too close due to her father's disappearance would come to an end.
She glanced back at Jake and saw that his eyes were so full of hope and happiness. She mentally scolded herself for taking so long to warm up to him.
During lunchtime, Zara and Veronica were huddled together with Zara rubbing the tip of her pen on her forehead writing names of boys, scratching and un-scratching feverishly. Veronica was whispering names of potential dates for herself that gave Zara's memory a hard time while she tried to recall every guy from the school she could think of.
Jake joined them a while later, with a food tray large enough to hold food for all of them. He deposited the tray on the table and pulled a chair as he sat down, "Ladies, what's up?"
Veronica silenced him, "Shhh…girl talk going on- it's secret. Boys not invited." Jake raised his eyebrow as he stuffed his mouth with fries, "Oh, so you want to talk about boys but don't want a boy to help you to secure a date for prom night?"
Veronica's eyes glittered with excitement as she tried to play cool, "What do you mean?"
Jake dusted his hands and rolled up his sleeves. In a hushed whisper, he put his hat on Veronica's head. "I mean Ms. Cutie pie; you need someone on the inside to check who's going out with whom so that you don't waste time following false leads."
Veronica blushed slightly and asked, "Ohh, I see. And, how would you know the answers?"
He continued as he ate a sandwich, "Because I work in the cafeteria and I hear loads of interesting information. You definitely want me on your team."
Veronica scoffed,"How can you eat so much and still stay in shape? I eat one sandwich and I look like a toad." Zara's eyes moved from Jake to the tray, he had indeed finished half of the food.
Jake gave Veronica a sweet smile, "Well, you would make a very cute toad."
Veronica giggled as she pulled the tray towards herself and grabbed her share of cheesy sandwich, "Ya, but you only need to find a date for me. Zara has already got one."
No sooner had the words left Veronica's mouth, Jake's face drained of all the color he had. He coughed so hard that Veronica had to hand him a bottle of water. His fingers squeezed the sauce bottle harder than necessary and there was a pool of sauce on their tray.
Veronica raised an eyebrow and said, "Jake, you are drowning the fries."
Jake looked at her, "Huh". He immediately grabbed several tissues and tried to salvage the fries that had now gone limp.
He tried acting nonchalant about it, but his voice sounded weak to his own eyes, "Who...who is the lucky guy?"
Zara caught Jake's eye and saw a flash of hurt in his eyes. Or had she imagined it?
Veronica, oblivious to the effect her words had had on Jake, kept munching on the sodden fries. Jake nudged her and she glanced at him questioningly, "What?"
"Who is she going on a date with?" Jake asked again, a hint of jealousy creeping up his voice.
Zara buried her head in a book as heat rose up her cheeks while Veronica slapped her, "Why can't you answer him?" She then turned to see Jake's face and finally caught up with what was going on.
"Her TV," Veronica answered and Jake visibly relaxed. Veronica continued in her chirpy voice, "Apparently, she doesn't want to go to the dull event and wishes to be at home watching some movies instead."
The color came back in Jake's face and the world suddenly seemed hopeful. "Well, let's hope she changes her mind because I know that there will be a boy somewhere who would be dying to go with her," he added, eyeing Zara.
