Confessions

The following day, Jake arrived at Zara's doorstep and was greeted by a smiling Rose. "Jake, I can't thank you enough for being there with Zara. I don't think I would have made it with all of my extra work going on."

Jake smiled as he walked inside, "You don't need to thank me for something I enjoy."

Rose handed him a coffee mug and some cookies, "Ooh, does it mean what I think it means?"

Jake shrugged and tried to think of a suitable answer when Zara shouted from her room. "Mom, stop harassing him."

Rose winked at Jake who laughed as Zara climbed down the stairs. "I hope Mr. Turner is doing okay, now. Z told me about his cardiac arrest."

Jake sobered a bit at the mention of his grandpa. "Umm, yeah. He is kind of okay now but doctors have warned him to not do anything too stressful."

Zara kissed on her mother's cheek as she grabbed an apple from the kitchen counter, "So, now you do not need to hand me the shake mixed with the medicines. It tastes awful."

Rose bit her lower lip, "You..you know I have been doing that?"

Zara grinned, "I suspected, as nothing could make a banana shake taste so horrible. But, you have been caught."

Rose met Jake's eye and he gave her a brief nod. Zara noticed the exchange and she replied, "Yeah mom, I know everything. But, I didn't know you thought I was so weak that I would freak out to see myself in a hospital."

Rose looked down as she rubbed her hands together nervously, "I..I didn't want to bother you, honey. I was going to tell you, but when I was sure that you were okay."

Zara kept munching the apple, "Oh and is that why our expenses have suddenly shot up through the roof? Is that why you talk on the phone begging people to give you time to pay back?"

Rose softened a bit and her eyes glistened with tears. She put her hands on Zara's shoulders and asked her a counter question, "Is that why you suddenly wanted to work part-time?"

Zara tried her best to answer, "Err, would it be not good to have some additional income?"

Rose was still a bit reluctant and kept nervously biting her lower lip, "But honey, you already have so much schoolwork.."

Zara took her mother's hands and squeezed, "Mom, we have had this discussion before. Atleast, let me try..please."

Rose shook her head and sighed, "Guess my daughter is all grown up now."

Zara giggled and embraced her mother. Jake stood there watching the sweet bond of the mother and daughter. He was fascinated by their relationship, their love. He wanted to be a part of something as special and unique so bad. He had been a lone child, not knowing who his mother was.

Rose looked at him, gazing them from afar and stretched a hand out for him. Jake gave a genuine smile and gave them both a bear hug.

Veronica, who had just entered her best friend's house, scowled, "Hey, don't leave me."

She too went ahead and they all stood in a group hug and Zara felt the knots in her stomach go slack as she dissolved in the heartwarming puddle.

They all sat together on the table as Jake put on the chef's hat and began baking pies. The scent of vanilla and chocolate filled the home that wafted through the air. Somewhere in the far corners of the land, a blue-eyed boy was hiding behind a tree looking at the scene unfold in front of him.

He took a long look at Zara, who was smiling and giggling with her friends and family. The smile on her face lit him up from the inside, making him feel warm and fuzzy. He smiled wistfully before he proceeded to walk away.
