A long week of scans, blood results, immunity trials and surgery. Not only was the nanotechnology act as organs I was missing but also they hide the issue of most of my organs having failed already. My abnormal cravings and serious body decompose while in hibernation is all due to the body's over compensating need to make more clean blood. This was instead of purification of blood already in the immune system. It's fair to say I would have been dying in the plastic now that I was thawed and no longer had any of the technology that kept these issues hidden. Maybe my brother did know which was why he sent me to the one place where they have the facility for new replacements. The artificial organs are the best in space station technology and a far cry from using organ donars in a weakened population. My recover had been average, not inhuman fast or abnormal developments.
My talent in medical knowledge has been a boast that they needed not just in my care. They have on occasions sent me a information of someone they were treating and asking for a senior opinion in how to go about correcting. They had a few asks about things they never crossed before. They seem to like my way treating things much better then they intend, since I choose noninvasive methods. I have became a senior consultant among the medical team and been given a position within this ward that was about watching patients and acting in emergency care.
I am given an area with a desk to over see the patients that they have issues with. Most here were stubborn fools whom didn't want let themselves be healed, needs a creature like me to put the fear if breaking bones as a terrible idea. Some patients are regulars with body diseases that still haven't found cures for. Some with allergy to unknown sources. Curiosities that they wanted to look at me as I of them. No children, to my disappointment. At best a grumpy teenager is among the team whom avoids me. This is to be my main work station on a scheduled basis, not that they expect me to follow a schedule with the way my sleeping patterns doesn't match with human ones. I am not expected to be given any opportunity that seemed at all critical. So it was a trust issue. I don't blame them for considering how long ago my knowledge was and maybe outdated practice now.
This evening was very busy next door, they had been a fight again. So many injured with electric current based weapons. It was as if they were all struck by lightening. Heart rhythm disruptions and body spasms. Among them I had been give a patient with a cut along the arm, it was a surface wound with some tack staple closing. They refused to answer questions and ignored me up until I jabbed a scanned into the neck for heart rate recording. I sighed at them with how over reactive they were being.
"You're luck as you are." I told him thoughtlessly with the last tack to close his arm wound and extra spray of cleaner. I removed the 4 pairs of gloves when I was sure he was not going to be bothering the tacks.
"So what or who are you?" Rudely asked.
"I am Kate Nicks. I was human once. I have a brother whom is a machine, you know him as Ambassador. We go back in a long history. It doesn't seem to matter really." I washed hands in habit of always being hygienic. They stare at me for a long time not at all impressed, "I was among the 1580 whom were frozen to research into radiation clean up for the planet. I am one of 47 whom lived a long time still. No... it really doesn't matter at all." The dry towel placed down and lowered to all fours but on the desk and chair, "At best my fame is only in the research we did on parasites. The famous traveller nomad whom partly owned the dark market for a while. I am sure it all different."
The empty stare he held with watching me pick through a new reality panel of information about a different patient. He was just bewildered it seems but it was also shock. He looked at the difference of next door and here.
"Is there a reason why you not in there trying to save lives?" I lowered the panel.
"The staff here don't want me in there. They seem to not care for how extensive I may know how to save peoples lives. They look at me and see a creature." I lifted back up the panel, "When I leave this room a alarm sets off and they all scramble about confused and wary." I put the panel to the side, "Yes, I know how to turn it off. I am not stupid. But they seem to want to have heart attacks around me."
He stared between the room of busy people and the waiting room beside getting fuller. He grumbles a bit and just simple muttered about being right back. I pose in watching him talking to the waiting room staff whom are snowed under. With eventually sending a few critical folks my way. I may have placed new gloves and I took out some tools they were not normally using for treatment here, but I had a purpose of my method.
I had each following my instructions exactly. From coughing to stablizing electric current still flowing in there bodies by holding a metal bar in both hands. Just a metal pole and a closed dead battery circuit. The battery would charge from static build in the patient. The pole was so they didn't feel it leaving their bodies in pain. Once that part was over, it was basis check up and scan for the area of flesh that been fried. Mmm... no plasma residues or trailing. Well never mind.
"Yup. You are free to go." I told those I looked after, "Not unless you are hiding anything else."
They disagree and leave. I had folks take their place, repeated treatment. Not trace of where the electric was entering the body from. The occasional zap from them but I was fine. I emptied the waiting room really, eyeing the doctors struggling the room over. I sighed and went over there. They all turned all freaked out and with weapons.
I roll my eyes and some started working on the next patient along. I have to restart his guys heart and I was going to do it the way I have always. With a zap... he was awake from death. I checked him over with him being awake and aware. I nod lightly. Next guy. There the entry plasma tracks I was looking for. The scan shows all vital parts were missed. He had a old injury which was cleaned up and retacked with the staple method here. The rest of the room of people may had weapons on me the whole time but they were lowered with the last patient awaken and all was well to speak again. I wrote our a few medicines recommendations and some basic route checks.
"So what did the battery you brought with you do exactly?" The guy I skin tacked his arm back.
"I started put with a dead battery. So you tell me." I handed it to him and left the room, "Sometimes I wonder if we digress on knowledge known for centuries the longer we are in space."
I go back to my office with the door open, back to reading my panels of compicated medical care. The team in a big fuss about me for sure, the commotion grabbing attention of some higher folks within the station. I checked the time and was still timetabled here. Maybe I work to fast when I am focused. Either way, there was a message sent to have me report to a new area. That I was to talk to someone about things.
Just out of having a hunch, I had myself look a little more presentable then I have been. It were mostly with guessing they weren't expecting anything big deal from me. In trying out a outfit I have prepared for such occasion, and with some practice in with walking human more. The meeting is tomorrow, so I left this little lacking of a crisis in the medical bay early. I have to still take things easy. I can't risk my own stitches to open, as not all of them are fully sealed.
In the mirror when I got out the shower, I caught glimpse of myself properly. A sort of first in years. My body wasn't as bloated as the day I managed out of the plastic wrap. The scars from the surgery were still tacky, weepy a little but healthier at the least. The few stitches that are present are ones I replaced their work. I didn't want the metal tacks to catch on any clothing I have been wearing. They were large long scars that weren't ever going to go away. So much of my human shape was curved into a chunky body. Not fat with going by the way I am able to flex joints in near horrific twists. I have quiet the jaw and pointed forward into a snout, sort of maybe reptiles. The lower jaw is like a snake, hinges that can click in and out. The ear areas are completely taken with the gill structure that acts as my breathing and smell, like the one Doctor at Twycross in the aquatic area. The boneless tail, a cord of skin more then anything else for now. There is plenty of features to suggest inhuman changes but there is still what remains of my back bone structures.
The light amount of fur on me could be mistaken for clothing but I wasn't in that sensibility of animal logic. It was all the same parasite mirror pigmentation, using what flower petals do with sun light. The sort of bending light by the refractional bounce off. The chemical structure has rotational changes with causes the colouring to alter. It's not impressive like myth about chameleons.
It's hard to realize that I am still me. Especially with paying mind to how my hands used to be and what they are now. This place as given me that moment to care about my appearance then I did on the surface.
Maybe because the hygiene levels are monitored more often or the attempt to not be a enemy to those around me. It could be that I finally had the care I have been needing, giving me that feeling of being me again. The subconscious ignorance of being 'alright' when really it's anything else.
Whatever the case is, it had boasted my confidence to wear certain clothing styles . The embrace of accepting that it wouldn't matter what I wear - I will always simply scare anyone.
They will be in for a surprise when I met middle management. I can't imagine things going to crazy if I were to become noticed more. I must protect any interests at heart that he may be working on. If things when really crazy, I will hold myself to as best suited for the role.
It's a good thing I started the homework of knowing names early. That helps.
It helps to have an idea of what news articles are saying about my brother. He isn't hard to search about on a public domain. He has a business partner at least, I am glad his not doing the Ambassador work alone.
