Only Look, Do Not Touch

Jane PoV.

William H. Doe. A kind man, was the impression I had of him, although I had only known him for a short period of time. He was apperently a cripple himself, and said he had decided to adopt me so I wouldnt have to "suffer the pain of the orphanage as a cripple". His words, not mine.

He always found it fun that we had the same name. He really got amused at the smallest of things.

We had spent some time togheter now, as the entire school of New Bostin was transferring to other schools, and mine would be delayed for some time, which led to me not having much free time, and I had to say I enjoyed hearing him talk about his fantasy world. I guess that was what it was, and escape from reality, as only a single man had powers and he used them for the good.

He was the only person without that glow in him, or well he had a glow in him but unlike most that were formed into shapes and colors, his was... misty. Almost etheral, not quite there so to speak. I hadnt told anyone about the colors I saw in them, saw whirling around inside them,r begging to be released, to fight and to grow.

It was quite strange, as it made him seem almost lifeless. Like something was missing, something crucial. Maybe it was, but I wouldnt tell him that.

I once reached out for one and I remebered that cold, yet so warm, voice speaking to me. Telling me to reach out, to make it mine. I would have done it, to the nice lady from the authorities, if that voice hadnt cut through the mist that had plauged my mind. That plauged my memories, even though I knew they were clear once. Knew that as clearly as I knew that reaching out was not something she wanted, not yet.

I hadnt slept much the first days at William's house, so clearly remembering the monster that hung up in the sky, so far away, dead, the news said, yet he still found ways to rip and tear. Claw everyone and everything to pieces, atleast in my mind. Atleast when I closed my eyes.

Apperently he had gotten help from an old friend of his from school that was able to send someone into a dreamless sleep by touching them for a period of time, as long as they didnt struggle. It helped me, helped me oh so much.

Weeks had passed, and the monster wasnt hunting me anymore. It wasnt there everytime I closed my eyes, didnt drag me back to the burning school, it was so cold, yet so hot. I couldnt sleep without aid from Williams old friend, but it was helping me during my day. I could function as a human again, atleast.

And here we, me and William, were, exited as he was about to publish his book, UnOrdinary, about a single man with all the power in the world, living in a world where no one else has powers. It was an interesting read, I would admit, although not a favorite of mine, it might suit someones taste. The man with all that power reminded me too much of the monster, all his benevolence couldnt change that.

I still hoped it would be well received, despite my personal dislike of it.

Anger and pity. That was all I felt at this moment, when William told me his book had just got the dubious honor of being banned by the authorities, because of the society challening ideas it represented.

Yes, because it commited the great crime of telling people to be decent to each other? To not crush those weaker than you beneth your feet, to make them feel like they were nothing, less than nothing even!

I, as much as it horrified me, started to understand the hatred the terrorist, like that monster, had for the authorities, as mine started to bubble up. It was like that day, but instead of fear paralyzing me it was hatred tearing into me, making me unable to breathe with it clogging my throat and seeping into the rest of me.

"It's fine Jane." A kind voice, one I was almost unable to place in my own anger, cut through the bubbling, boiling, feeling inside me rendering it to nothing. I just stood there, ashamed that I was able to justify the actions of those monsters wanting nothing more than destruction. "It's fine because while the book may be illegal now, we still made some money out of it, ey?"

That silly grin was plastered on his face, as he joked around. I could tell he was sad, but here he was, comforting me while I cried like some little child.

"Still as silly as ever aren't you, William?"

My own voice sounded weak, almost choked, but it was fine, because we were. We were fine.

"Hey now, it's rude to insult an old gentleman like myself, you know?" His voice was still as joking as before, but it lost that joking tone as he continued on. "Anyways, it's your bedtime young lady. Go to sleep now and let me worry about the rest, alright?"

"Fine."

And with that her nightly ritual commenced as always.

I might like him, but he wasn't my father. That was reserved to the man that felt so much larger than life. Like the world revolved around him, and not the other way around. Sometimes it didnt feel like a very nice world.

If William noticed me starting to talk more after that, he didnt mention it. The same could be said about my comments about the authorities failures.

Here I was again, walking through the hallways of a school for the first time in a year. A new class, a new school and new friends.

The test was quite hard, so i had high expectations of the schools academics and I could probably get a well paying job, even with my status as a cripple, if I graduated. When I graduated.

The door seemed larger than it did from the end of the hallway. Or maybe that was fear talking. Well, I would have to find out later, as now I had a class to greet!

Elaine PoV.

The teacher had told us that we were getting a new student today, and I had to say despite not having a strange hair color, as I new happened more and more recently, so only the older generations really called hair like my own strange anymore, she was incredibly strange. Nothing really standing out, except her hair having far too much gel in it, but she looked almost like someone took a look at a human and then decided to build their own.

Arms just a bit too thin, fingers a tad bit long, eyes almost being gold in color and just looking a bit younger then she really was. A bit short in all honesty, but not like a child, rather like an adult that was scaled down. It was, not quite creepy, but unsettling.

"-and I hope I can have fun at this school with all of you!"

Whoops, looks like I had missed her introductions, due to getting distracted by my thoughts. Well, I suppose it doesnt matter too much, the teacher already told us her name, Jane.

"Hi Jane, I hope you do have fun at this school. My name is Elaine if you were wondering."

"Oh, Hi Elaine, its nice to meet you!"

Well, Elaine was nice girl, quite talkative too.

"So, what is your ability?"

"Well, I actually dont have one..."

She stopped speaking after that. Wouldnt even look at me.

Great way to end your first friendship in this school Jane. Atleast I avoided getting too attatched to the bigot.
