Chapter Thirty Nine - DNA

Hailey's POV

Sorry? I don't think Adian's the type to repent for whatever he did to offend anyone, not even God.

Not wanting to hurt Adana, I simply agreed with what she said.

Putting the bags on the kitchen counter, I considered leaving my purchases downstairs but not wanting to offend Adian I decided to pack it all into my room until tomorrow.

Leaving the cake on the counter promising to to return for a piece in a short while, I balance my bags forcing to take it all up at once.

Adana had already run off so I'm doing it alone, which is not a bad thing, because if she knows that I'm insecure about being in Adian's home, it could hurt her and I don't want her being angry with her brother because of me.

Putting all of my bags on the closet floor to deal with later, I sat in my room wondering what I should do about dinner.

Deciding that I'll take my chances with Adian's temper, I changed and returned to the kitchen dressed in t-shirts and a gym shorts, which hung longer than the length of the shorts.

Taking out the ingredients to prepare Adian's soup plus making a separate dinner for the rest of us. but I will have mines upstairs.

It took me close to two hours to prepare both meals. While the chicken and potatoes were in the oven I cut a slice of red velvet cake with a chicken noddle soup for Adian, adding a bottle of water putting it on s tray.

Balancing the full tray up the stairs still not seeing anyone else.

As I was about to knock on the door of the forbidden room, I heard Basil's voice, "you think we should get a DNA test done? I mean it could help answer some questions".

"I would be betraying my mother if I did that behind her back" I heard Adian say.

"Yes but she would have said something and I think you owe it to Hailey and Chubbs" Basil said.

Changing the topic, "Man she did good, getting that contract with Simon's. Her proposal must have been great and she just started" I heard Adian say.

"You sound proud" I heard Basil retort.

'Nah" Adian responded.

On that note I turned and walked back downstairs. How can someone commend me for a job well done and not be proud of me.

Yet I'm drawn to him for some reason. What does he owe Adana and I?

His soup was getting cold and I would hate to dump it.

I heard footsteps outside the kitchen while I was flipping the chicken.

"Something smells good in here" Basil said walking in first followed by Adana.

"Hailey you started without me" Adana wines. " I was trying to get some homework out of the way before coming down to help you" she sound apologetic

Turning towards the door I see her standing next to Adian, who was squinting his eyes in pain.

Looking at the tray on the counter. "oh you've prepared soup for Adian" she says pulling him towards the counter, to sit in the seat in front the tray.

"Eat" she commanded

Looking once at her and then at me, ",do I still get some of that" he points to the oven, "if I eat this?" he asks me.

Shocked that he spoke to me. I simply nodded, turning back to check the potato tray in the oven.

Everything except the chicken was ready, "would you all be having your dinner in here?" I ask no one in particular.

"Hell yes, it's closer to the kitchen sink to wash up after" Basil was quick to answer.

Adana came and started setting out dishes for the four of us, leaving me wondering how to skip this one.

Adian eyed the counter settings, looking at me while sipping his still hot soup.

While I was still wondering how to leave after taking the chicken out of the oven. "I hope you're not going to run away again" Adian causing Basil to chuckle and Adana's surprise look.

"What?" she asks looking between Adian and Basil.

"My favorite cakes" Adian says with a smile.

Eying the red velvet cake, "since when?" Adana asks Adian, coming to sit next to him, pulling the cake out of his tray.

"Hey" Adian taps her fingers, but didn't take it away from her

"Since a girl your brother had the hots for introduce him to it' Basil tells Adana, sitting opposite her with chugging a beer.

Blushing and reddening by the seconds, I pushed my head into the oven feeling the heat, as I finally pulled the chicken out, putting it to the other end if the counter.

I went into the refrigerator taking out the green salad and a bottle of the wine I bought earlier.

Deciding to stay downstairs and eat with them so that I don't offend Adana, I moved my plate to the other end of the counter that's further away from Adian.

" That's running" Basil points out, ignoring him, I took up the trays of potatoes and chicken placing it where I would have been sifting. directly opposite Adian.

Basil got up, adding beers and water to the table.

I opened my bottle of wine after fighting with it for a few minutes, fulling my glass to the rim, slurping it up before it overflowed.

I looked up to see Adana giggling, "it beats wiping it off the counter" I tell Adana.

Everyone started dishing out their food , "Is that wine any good?" Basil asks, starting to eat.

"It was popular at my dorm" I said, drinking half glass already and I haven't dished my food out yet.

"Ah girls in a dorm" Basil says dreamingly

"Pervert" Adana says, looking at him.

Chuckling, "ask your brother about those days" he tells Adana only to have Adian glare at him.

Adana seems to be enjoying her food, "Hailey this is great, I mean it's so tasty" Adana complements me on my cooking. "Where did you learn all this?' Adana continues.

Embarrass to be complemented in front of Adian, I took another sip of my drink.

"Uhm, I learnt from nanny Peirce, you tube and from swapping stories with the girls at the dorm." I told her feeling sad because most girls would says that they learnt from their mom.
