Bas and his bad timing, pokes his head through the door, "they're calling you in Jerry's room" he explains his reason for disturbing Hailey and I and before I could make a decision, Hailey makes it for me.
"Go" she shoves me gently, "Jerry needs you, go" she continues gently shoving me towards the door, "I'll be fine, she smiles, but I don't trust her smiles because she hide her pain behind them.
I shook my head, needing to be with her for the results that are life changing for the both of us.
"Go!" She chuckles and I turn to Bas and the look on his face says I should listen to her.
Kissing her gently on the lips, "ok!' Without hesitating a moment longer, I turn and literally ran out of the examination room Hailey occupied and ran two doors down to Jerry's room, silently praying, "God please let him be fine, please and while you're at it, please let Hailey be pregnant!"
Only dad and aunty stood beside Jerry's bed and aunty is holding his hand. Suddenly I'm nervous about going further and I just stood on the side watching and listening to aunty crying while dad stood quietly on the other side of the bed looking down at the man that, as far as I know, has never been sick one day in his life.
Sensing my presence, dad looks around with a small encouraging smile. Maybe things are not as bad as it was earlier.
Outstretching a hand towards me, "he's here" he says looking down at Jerry's frame on the bed, nodding for me to come further inside.
Dad moved aside for me to go closer to Jerry's bed and I gasp at the sight of my uncle, whose hooked up to tubes and machines.
I couldn't hold the tears, "I'm sorry" I started and Jerry turned to his wife.
"Can you guys give me a few minutes with my boy" he says weakly, glancing between aunty and dad.
Aunty reluctantly left with dad, but since my eyes fell on Jerry, I haven't looked away. In just a few hours, he's gotten so frail and broken.
"I'm sorry" I started again and he shook his head.
Shaking his head, "no" he says weakly, "you didn't cause this and I know you would blame yourself, that's why I needed to speak to you first." Jerry, even in his hospital bed, looks sternly at me, but I can't help but feel guilty because it occurred on my watch.
"What happened?" Sitting on the edge of his bed, I look on keenly hoping that his explanation is good enough to ease my conscience.
Closing his eyes, my uncle started talking, "a few years ago while you were in college, I develop a heart problem. Other than your aunt and your dad, no one knew. Not even Amelia." He said and I wonder how I missed him not being well for more than three years.
"After the first attack, I haven't had any problems until about two weeks ago and I tried to keep a low profile at work and at home, in order to give my body more rest to strengthen my heart." Jerry said and I am still confused.
Frowning, "were you sick this morning?" I asked worried that my uncle has been pushing himself because these days, I have stopped pulling my weight around the company.
Shaking his head, "no, but when I saw what your mother did to Hailey, I started feeling off, but didn't say anything, thinking it would go away." He looks beyond me towards the door. "Where's Hailey is she outside?" He looks hopeful and I nod.
Rubbing behind my neck awkwardly, "uh, yeah but she is in an examination room two door down." I explained and Jerry went from surprise to worry.
"Why? What's wrong?" He asks and I look down unsure of what I should do since I promise Hailey I won't say anything to anyone, but does that include Jerry?
"Adian?" He calls me weakly and I lift my head to look at him, thinking that maybe some good news will help him recover faster.
Rubbing my neck again, "uh, em, while I was in here earlier with aunty, Hailey was outside and she fainted" I was saying but stopped when I saw him staring back at me with a horrified look. "No, no, don't worry, she's awake and she's awaiting some test results from the doctor" and again I paused because he seemed worried and he shouldn't be.
Looking over my shoulder, deciding to tell him what results she's waiting on, "I promised her I won't say anything, but the thing is that, the doctor did a pregnancy test." I said at a slower pace, watching his face break into a regular Jerry's happy smile.
"What?" His voice sounding louder and I was afraid any excitement will cause his heart to race faster, while he smiled from ear to ear.
Shaking my head, "we don't know anything yet. We were waiting for the results when Bas called me to come here." I explained and Jerry's smile left his face.
"You f***ing as***le" he swears at me, "go back to her and bring her here with the good news and don't worry I will keep your secret, for now" he chuckles waving for me to go back to Hailey. "I can't believe you left you wife to come here." He mutters.
Needing to explain that it wasn't my choice, "I didn't plan to come right away but Hailey thought, knowing that you are fine was more important, at that time." I said, but even in his weak state, he still had enough strength to glare at me.
"Get out and send your aunt in, then bring your wife in." He instructed me and I still wasn't sure that she is pregnant.
As I was about to leave I spun around, "but we're not sure that she is pregnant." I warned him and he chuckles softly.
Nodding his head with a small smile, "oh she is, I just feel it here." He touches his heart.
