Chapter fourteen

As I stepped into the firm ,I felt nervous because I thought I had dressed more than I should . "Confidence Liza !"I murmured to my myself .

"Surpriseee!"All attorneys at the firm said with cakes in hand and various forms of wines .

"Welcome back ,Attorney Carson !"Aww! About that , I wasn't surprised since daddy made changes to my name earlier today .

I guessed they knew about my case and reputation in society now , which is why they gave me high respect . I'm Ben Carson 's daughter anyways.

"We missed you very much .Clinton and Associates welcomes you back home ...!"Marcial said hugging me . Was I supposed to be surprised on that one ? When did we ever become so close , when the last time that I checked ,he wanted me out of his son's life .

Hmm! I guess he has turned a new leaf now !

After having some fun at the party hosted for me ,I stood outside and took in some fresh air .

"You look beautiful in blue ! Welcome back Attorney Carson!"Oliver said from behind and as usual ,his humour was just exquisite.

"Thank you for your good wishes..!"I said taking a leave .

"Your office is ready and nothing has changed over there .It is the same just as you left it ...!"He added with a smile .

"Thank you Oliver ...!"I patted his shoulders with a smile .

I then headed to my office ,took a seat and wondered who organized the party in my name .

Just then ,Bridget who is the head secretary entered and introduced me to a lady .

"Hello Attorney ! I'm Kara Dela Rosa ,your personal secretary !"She said with a cute office smile on her face .

"Attorney Carson ! Henceforth , she will be working for only you .She will schedule your meetings and tasks for each day !"Bridget said .

"Who made such changes ?"I asked resting my knuckles on my chin .

"Mr. Marcial Brown, attorney ! If you wouldn't mind ,I will take my leave "Bridget left with no further explanations .

"I will be at my desk attorney .In case you need anything ,please don't hesitate to call me..!"

" Alright Kara ,you may go !"Just before I could think things through ,I was called to Marcial's office .

"I heard you wanted to talk to me ,sir !"I said nicely and politely .

"Sit down Liza . I wanted to welcome you into our firm .

For the past six months ,your absence has kept many attorneys bored .You haven't received the credit for your case yet.

I'm proud of you my dear and I know this firm will do great with attorneys like you .

I liked the way you conducted your investigation and handled your case . Congrats for winning the case .By the way ,this is for you ...!"He handed her a paycheck.

"Sorry for the delay ,I should have given it to you six months ago but due to the issues that popped up ,I couldn't give it to you!"

"Thank you sir ....!"I said folding the paycheck into my clutch .

"Why don't you call me uncle instead since we are now a family !"

What ! Did I just hear that ? I thought to myself and still smiled at him .

"I know you and my son are no more but your father and I are almost like blood brothers . We have been friends for a very long time so I would prefer you call me uncle !"

Wonders never end ! Anyways ,did I have a choice ?

He did have a point after all ...!

"Okay uncle ! I have no problem with calling you that !

Umm! But please tell me ,whose idea was it to organize this party for me ? Was it yours or my father's ?"I asked while trying to fish out some information .

"It was my idea since you are my goddaughter and my responsibility is to ensure that you are happy .

Liza ,I don't want to feel that you are here because of favouritism .

You don't need to prove yourself to anyone because you are good at what you do !

When Elisa told me about your true identity ,I got to know why my son fell for you and you for him.

You are the same little girl Corazon and Ben sacrificed everything for .The same little girl I called my goddaughter .You are the same and you will never change ...!"Marcial explained happily .

"Sir ! Everything is set for the meeting..!"His secretary informed . "Alright ,we will be right there . It's time ,

my dear ,let's go ...!"He said and we both moved to the board room where all the attorneys were sitting comfortably and waiting for Marcial .

"I know you were not expecting this meeting but something urgent came up and we needed to address it , attorneys!

To start with ,I would like to address our current major case !

The case of the seven year Laura Acosta who has been defiled by the nineteen year old , Will Sam ! Unfortunately ,Laura has passed away since she bled to death.

Attorney Brown ,this is a criminal case which deals with murder and I would want you to handle this case along with Attorney Carson since the rights of Laura has been infringed upon .

I would want you both to handle this case with much equity !"Marcial said looking simultaneously at our faces .

"Was it intensional ?" I thought as uncle shared the other cases among the other attorneys .

"On that note ,this meeting is over . Not to forget ,a party will be hosted at home this evening and you are all cordially invited !

Attorney Brown and Attorney Carson should wait behind for a quick discussion!"Marcial said and we both heaved a sigh of relief .

We sat behind to listen to what Uncle Marcial had to say once all the other attorneys left .

"I know you are both baffled about my decision to make you handle the case concerning Laura Acosta .

I made you handle this case just because I know you are the best team which can attain justice for Laura .

It's nothing personal , so I would urge you both to work cordially and until you reach the depth of this issue ,you don't stop!

I hope you can both put your differences aside and work as a team !With that understood ,attorneys ,you may go now to continue with your respective tasks !"Marcial said leaving the both of us alone in the board room .

Once he left ,the room suddenly became heavy .

Who was to talk first ; Clinton or I ?

"Umm! I'd look into the case in my office first so that I will see what I can make of it !

I'd have Ursula send you the copies of the case !

Excuse me ,attorney !"Clinton said and left the room .

He left like it was so easy to get over everything !

I was so dump to be emotional now ! After a while ,I went back into my office to take a look at the copies of the case Ursula forwarded through Kara to me .

It was getting late and I needed to go home in order to dig deep into the case and know how to go about it . Uncle was right after all ,it was nothing personal so I needed to focus !

"Have some time to spare ?"Clinton asked Liza after getting into her office .

"Yes attorney Brown ! I just wanted to know the time we will file our case at the court and get a trial date for the case !"Liza said obeying all the rules of professionalism .

"I suggest we go tomorrow since the court is closed as at now !

You can sit ,attorney !"Liza said and Clinton sat comfortably with crossed legs .

"Did he have to cross his legs too ..?"Liza thought with a sneer .

"I will conduct the investigation and gather enough evidences to prove that Laura was defiled .

I have the necessary information to start the investigation !

Here are the analysis ..check them out !"Liza passed a file to Clinton which he quickly opened and began to look through .

"That's a good step ,attorney .I need to investigate more on the murder and what actually caused it !

When I'm done, I will give you all the information that I have gathered from my investigation !"Clinton said and passed the file back to Liza .

"Attorney ,your mum is here ...!"Kara informed .

"Tell her I will be there in a moment ! Okay then , if there's nothing to discuss about Attorney Brown , then I will take my leave !"Liza said packing her staff .

"Sure ..stay safe Attorney !"Clinton said with a straight face .

"Mummy ,what a pleasant surprise .I wasn't expecting to see you over here ..!"I said giving her a hug .

"I came to have a word with Marcial and I decided to pick you up so that I can deck you up for the party tonight hosted for Hazel ...!"Corazon said tugging her hair behind her ears .

"No mummy ! I don't think I can attend that party since I have so much to take care of!"Liza said heaving a sigh of relief .
