THIRTY ONE

It was common knowledge that Alphard Valois was an odd boy. Maybe odd wasn't the word many would like to use. His father said the boy was too stubborn for his own good, once he'd decided something, not a single person could change his mind. His mother said that the boy was just nervous and shy. His older brother Arther just laughed it off and said that Alphard was different, but not in a bad way either. His older sister Laila glared at whoever even mentioned the possibility of something being wrong with her little brother. He was just a kid, and he was perfect the way he was.

Anyone could notice it. The Lords, the servants, the other children all whispered behind his back. But Alphard chose to ignore them all. It didn't matter what they thought right? At least that was what Laila and Arther always told him.
