The Dinner

The next day Ava went to the hospital as usual. She had a busy day with surgery and outpatients. It was an uneventful day.

After work, she went to a few law firms to find a lawyer for her father's case but no one was optimistic about the case. Ava was disappointed and so stressed, she decided to call it a day and go home to keep her mother company. Ava was worried about her mother, Lilly's mood has been fluctuating a lot recently because of all the things happening, she was afraid, her mother will have a nervous breakdown. However, when she was about to get into a taxi to go home, her phone started to ring.

"Hello, Dr. Green, where are you?" Susan's quiet voice came from the other end.

"Susan! I am on my way home, why? Is there any emergency?" Ava asked worriedly, she usually gets calls from the hospital administration if there was an emergency, not from the nurse's personal number, so she asked a bit confused.

''No! Did you forget? Tonight, Dean Davis invited everyone from the cardiology department to have dinner.''

"Oh! I completely forgot. Alright, send me the address and I will be there as soon as I can." Ava said apologetically. With everything going on in her life, the dinner completely got out of her mind.

"Ok! I will send it right away, come quickly, we are waiting for you" Susan said in a hushed tone.

It was around 7:00 in the evening when Ava reached the given address. Royal International Hotel was the largest five-star hotel in the city and was most famous for its revolving restaurant.

When Ava was seven years old, she won first prize in the national piano competition. James and Lily were so happy that they brought her here for dinner. Ava vaguely remembered that they ate in the revolving restaurant on the top floor. Looking down from the revolving restaurant, they could see the whole city. At night, the surroundings looked spectacular with all the bright lights and the moving yachts on the river.

"Hello, do you have a reservation?" As soon as Ava entered the door, a young lady greeted her warmly.

"Yes please, I am a guest of Doctor John Davis?" Ava said lightly with a smile.

"Oh! It's the revolving restaurant on the top floor, please follow me." The lady said with a smile on her face.

When Ava arrived at the dining hall, she saw Dean Davis, next to him was sitting Director Brown, all the other people from the cardiology department were already there, only she was late. Ava looked around and saw the seat of honor was empty and Dean Davis was sitting on the seat next to it, she wondered if anyone else would join them for dinner.

"Here comes Ava." Dean Davis said with a warm smile.

Ava looked at the dean with a brilliant smile and said, "I'm sorry Dean Davis, I'm a little late."

Dean Davis shook his head and said, "It's OK, our Guest of Honor hasn't arrived yet."

Ava sat down and asked curiously, "Guest of Honor? Who is it?"

As soon as she asked that, they all heard a noise coming from the entrance. Everyone at the table along with Ava looked curiously to see what was making everyone so excited and her face instantly turned pale seeing who it was.

A man entered through the door wearing a fitted black suit and walked confidently toward their dining table with an indifferent face. Against the crystal light, his handsome face looked sharper and more attractive. Even Ava couldn't help but think how handsome he was.

Everyone was surprised to see Oliver Knight joining them for Dinner. The Dean only told them, a dignitary will be here to accompany them for dinner, but he didn't say who it was so naturally, everyone was very delighted to see Oliver, except for Ava of course. She was uncomfortable and tried to make herself invisible by shrinking back into her chair.

"Mr. Knight." Dean Davis got up from his seat, smiled more brightly, and greeted him enthusiastically like he was greeting the country's president.

"Dean Davis!" Oliver extended one hand for a shake keeping another in his pocket. He exuded a natural noble spirit in his every move, even the way he stood and shook hands looked sophisticated. No one dared to show any disrespect toward the man including the most notorious Director Brown.

Last night, Oliver called Dean Davis to invest 10 million Dollars in the hospital. He was astounded, he thought it was because of his uncle's successful surgery, Oliver decide to invest so he was over the moon and couldn't sleep all night from excitement. His suspicion was confirmed when Oliver invited the whole cardiology department to have dinner with him.

Everyone stood and welcomed Oliver, Ava didn't greet or said anything she just stood at the back praying he won't notice her in the crowd, however to her disappointment, as soon as Oliver's attention moved from Dean Davis he looked straightly at Ava.

"Doctor Green, you are looking beautiful tonight," Oliver said in his deep magnetic voice.

Ava's eyes widen in shock when she realized Oliver not only noticed her but also complimented her in front of everyone. She felt everyone's eyes on her and she glared at the man for making things so embarrassing for her. Her whole face turned red like a tomato as she said with a stiff smile, "Thank you, Mr. Knight."
