Breaking Sam's heart

Sam took the lead and started to serve food on Ava's plate. He said gently with a smile: "Try this beef it's delicious here."

Ava suddenly remembered that Sam was a foodie and he liked to explore different cuisine. He must have come here before. "Do you often come here to eat?"

"Yes, I came here with my friends a few times before, I like their food," Sam said gently.

"You still like to try out different restaurants, that's really nice," Ava said with a smile.

"Yes, I do. In fact, I have tried a few in this area. There are some very good restaurants near your hospital. I've had dinner with my colleagues a few times in a few of them."

"Really? I didn't know. I don't really eat outside that much." Ava said in a light tone. The hospital food lounge was good so she often has lunch in there and as Oliver didn't like to eat outside so she would always have dinner at home.

"Ava, you need to go out and explore more." Sam twisted his eyebrows and thought Ava used to be a free spirit, she liked to go out and eat outside but it seems she has confined herself.

Ava nodded and said with a smile, "Well, I know."

Sam looked at her bright smile which was as pleasant as the spring breeze and wondered, 'What is that he gives you that you are willing to give up so much of you?' Love was indeed very unreasonable.

"Sam, how is Sarah doing at school? Do you think she would be able to get into a recognized university after graduation next year?" Ava asked suddenly, she thought she haven't had time to check on Sarah for a long time and she didn't know how the girl was doing recently.

"Sarah is one of the top students of the school, if her grade stays the same which I am sure would be, then there shouldn't be any problem to get into a good finance school in the city if that's what she wanted."

"I asked her once if she wanted to go abroad for further study but she was not interested in that. She wanted to study here."

"Well, you should respect her choice. Although the city Universities are not as recognized as Harvard and Cambridge, but they were not really bad. She once told me she wanted to study finance and join your father's business but I think what interests her most is not finance but photography. I have seen her enter a few photography competitions in the school and her works are really good. I think she has a good future if she pursues that as a career."

"Sam, could you please talk to her and advise her to follow her heart. I think she wants to study finance to share my father's burden to repay him for taking her in, this girl is too sensible. But we don't need her to do that, she is family and we all want her to do what she actually wanted to do." Ava's beautiful brows knitted together as she said worriedly.

"Sure, I'll talk to her about it," Sam said seriously.

"Sam..." Ava suddenly said in a very gentle voice biting her lips.

"Yes?" Sam looked at Ava, there was a polite smile on his lips.

"Please don't get me wrong for pushing you but I really want you to be happy. Why don't you try to give others a chance?" Ava said almost in a pleading tone. She was hating herself to keep pushing him but she had seen how Erika was talking about Sam, she was really into him and Ava wanted Sam to give her a chance.

Sam's hand which was under the table clench into a fist. The smile disappeared from his face but he still said gently, "Ava, everyone's idea of love is different. The way you are satisfied loving Oliver Knight I am also satisfied loving you."

Ava lowered her eyes she knew she should not push Sam anymore but when she thought of Erika she tried one last time "Sam, Erika is a good girl."

"I know," Sam said seriously.

"Then why don't you try to give her a chance?"

"Ava, you cannot satisfy everyone, can you? If someone likes me and I want to give her a chance because of that, then wouldn't I be pitying her? Many people like you I don't see you giving everyone a chance." Sam's eyes flashed a trace of disappointment. Even though it was fleeting, but Ava caught it.

"Sam I didn't mean it that way. It's just Rika really likes you and I just don't want her to get hurt." Ava said lowing her eyes, she knew she was hurting him by saying this but she couldn't stop herself.

Sam fell silent and looked at Ava in shock. After a while with a self-mocking smile he said sadly, "Ava, do you know what you are saying? Are you afraid that if I stayed friends with Erika I will hurt her? So you want me to pretend to like her? You think if I lie to her like that she wouldn't be hurt?"

Sam was very disappointed in Ava today, they were best friends. Although he loved her but he never forced her to love him back and he respected her decision. He was willing to wait for her until she came to him but now that she couldn't give him her love she was trying to manipulate his love. He never thought Ava could do something like that.

Ava was stunned, she felt very uncomfortable in her heart, she didn't mean that, he clearly misunderstood her. "Sam, I am not asking you to cheat Erika. I was just hoping you could give her a chance." Ava said calmly.

"You don't want me to hurt her, but what you are asking me to do is cheating her and would hurt her. How could you not understand that?" Sam's tone was stern, he was getting angry now.

Ava lowered her head in shame. She knew today her words had broken Sam's heart into thousand pieces, he said she was his happiness but she couldn't give him that, she felt sorry for his sincere love.

Yes, she was selfish, she wanted Sam to give Erika a chance not only for Erika but also for Oliver's sake. Erika likes Sam and Oliver loves his sister very much. If Sam and Erika got together then Oliver would eventually compromise for his sister and let go of the grudge against Sam.
