Beijing Tiantan Hospital.
Ava has been very busy since morning. She had two operations in a row and by the time she finished, it was always lunchtime. She quickly went to her office intending to change her clothes to go for lunch when her phone started to ring. Ava checked it and saw it was a call from one of her patient's mother. The patient was a little girl who had a heart operation last month. So Ava quickly picked up the call thinking if the little girl was having any trouble.
"Hello, Doctor Green? I'm Lenin's mother. My daughter had an operation last month, do you remember me?" A middle-aged woman said in an anxious tone.
Of course, Ava remembered the patient and her mother. The little girl called Lenin was only nine-year-old, but that's not why she remembered her. Her family condition was not very good and her mother couldn't afford the operative and post-operative cost so Ava helped her raising money from the hospital charity fund. That's why she particularly remembered the girl and her family.
"Yes, I remember you. How is Lenin doing?" Ava asked politely.
"Dr. Green Lenin is having chest pain again since this morning. She is in a lot of pain and I can't afford to come to the hospital. I know you helped us last time and it was because of you my daughter could have the operation but I really need your help. Please, Dr. Green, come to my house to check Lenin. I will never forget your kindness." The woman said with tears and in a choked voice.
"OK, please don't cry I'll come as soon as I can. Send me the address." Ava said hurriedly and hung up the phone to get ready to leave. She couldn't think of any reason for Lenin to have chest pain. Her operation and recovery were successful so Ava was very worried.
On the other side of the phone, Lenin's mother heard the busy tone and couldn't help but feel guilty for lying to Ava. She helped her so much during the operation and took care of everything and now she had to betray her like that. She put the phone on the table and looked at the two men who were standing in front of her, holding two guns one at her the other at her daughter. She looked at her daughter whose hands and feet were tied up with a rope on the bed. For her daughter's safety, she had to lie and invite Ava here.
When she was preparing for lunch today suddenly someone knocked on her door. Their family condition was not very good and they lived in a shabby place far from the city. Her neighbor's daughter often comes to play with Lenin so she thought it must be her and opened the door. However the moment she opened it 4 men wearing black suits with fierce looks on their faces rushed into the house. She was so shocked that she was about to scream when one of the men pointed a gun at her and another man quickly tied up Lenin on the bed. Then they instructed her to call Ava and invite her here. She was helpless so she had to do what they asked.
At the hospital,
Mia saw Ava was changing her clothes so she asked curiously, "Ava, where are you going? Aren't you going to have lunch?"
"No Mia, have lunch with sister Susan. I have to see a patient outside." Ava said absentmindedly as she picked up her handbag. A Life was at stake, how could she wait to have lunch?
"Outside? Which patient?" Mia frowned and asked.
"Do you remember the little girl called Lenin, I operated on last month, who we helped to raise money for the operation because their financial condition was not good? Her mother just called and said she is having chest pain again and couldn't afford to come to the hospital so she was asking me if I could pay a house visit. I am going to see her." Ava said as she rushed toward the elevator.
"Ava, you are so kind. You don't have to do this, you know." Mia said softly, she had never seen such a kind-hearted doctor like Ava.
"Mia, it's not about kindness, it's about the value of human life. Moreover, she is just a little girl, why should she suffer just because her family condition was not good? I became a doctor to help people so that's what I am doing." Ava said with a soft smile.
"Then I'll come with you. I can help you." Mia also smiled and said enthusiastically.
"OK, hurry up then." Ava agreed and entered the elevator with her.
Ava put the address Lenin's mother gave her into her GPS and started the car. When she reached the neighborhood, it looked dilapidated and a bit isolated. Her car couldn't go inside the narrow lanes so Ava parked the car at the side of the road and started to walk toward the house according to the address.
Mia looked at the surroundings and she felt a bit uncomfortable in her heart. Why this place looks so deserted? There was not a single person around. She held Ava's arm and asked: "Ava, are you sure we are at the right place? This place doesn't look safe to me."
Ava nodded her head and said firmly: "Yes, that's what the address said. Don't worry we are on the right way."
Ava and Mia finally found Lenin's house. Ava stepped forward and knocked on the wooden door covered with an iron sheet.
Mia looked at the shabby house and felt bad for the little girl. She thought compared to this girl she and her family was really in better condition.
As soon as Ava knocked on the door Lenin's mother opened it as if she was just standing right beside the door. She looked at Ava and said nervously "Doctor Green, you are here. Please come inside."
Ava's mind was full of Lenin's health condition, so she didn't notice the unusual look on the woman's face, to check the girl quickly she got inside without any hesitation. But as soon as she entered, someone knocked her on the head and she fell to the floor and lost conscious.
