Sinful desires

After finishing the joining formalities, he quickly wanted to start working. He wasn't doing it to impress her or anything. He very well understood that she had taken a huge risk for him, so he wanted to do everything possible in his scope to share her burden.

So he walked back to the nurse station of the cardiology wing, wanting to start the day.

"Hi!"

"Hello, Morpheous!" giggled Elora.

"Erm… I was wondering if one of you could walk me through Dr. Caroline's daily routine."

"But it's your first day today!" questioned Manila, another junior nurse.

"Well yeah. But I would like to start as soon as possible. Dr. Caroline already seems quite burdened."

"That's because she sort of invites the burden on herself," she joked, but somehow he didn't find that funny.

"If you don't do your work properly, then someone has to overwork!" he heard someone's voice from behind and turned back. The same senior nurse who had walked into his room holding that ECHO machine.

"You?" she exclaimed, her eyes wide open in surprise. What else was he expecting?

"Are you feeling unwell? Why did you disappear? Do you even know how worried we were because of you?" Turning towards the nurses, she said, "Fix his appointment on priority. He was quite sick earlier!"

Unable to understand anything, the nurses looked at Erica and asked, "He needs an appointment? But why? He is Dr. Caroline's new assistant."

"He is what?"

"Her new assistant. Didn't you see the news?" Elora asked. "He was the one who saved the pregnant woman alongside Dr. Caroline yesterday."

Erica looked at him with her brows knitted and her lips parted slowly. Seeing her face, Morpheous knew she was having difficulty connecting the dots.

"I haven't got a chance to introduce myself. I am Morpheous, and I will…"

"But how did you jump out of the window?" she asked abruptly.

"Window? What window? I prefer doors. I was perfectly fine and had an urgent affair to attend to. So I just left in a rush."

"That's what I thought. There was no way you could have survived the jump. But Dr. Caroline didn't believe us. That lady went out in the rain like a crazy woman in search of you."

"She did?"

"Oh yeah ... gave the ground floor staff a run for their money. She searched the perimeter herself."

"That explains the fever!" he muttered to himself, but a small part of him unknowingly felt happy that she was looking out for him, although he didn't know why.

"Anyway, it's good to have an experienced hand here. She is a good person. Do not listen to what anyone says about her." She gave a scornful look at the junior nurses, "She might be a bit sharp with her tongue, but she has a heart of gold. You will learn a lot, working with her. I definitely have."

"Well that's the plan for now," he said and gave out a warm smile, but only he knew that deep down, his only goal was to reduce his sin count to be able to go back to heaven. And for the learning part, maybe he could teach her a thing or two.

"Good! I like your attitude. My name is Erica by the way, and I am the head nurse here. I will call you during lunch break and introduce you to the rest of the staff."

"Thank you! That would be great. But as of now, I wanted to know about her itinerary and OT schedules. Can you help me with that?"

"I can!" chirped Elora before Erica could even answer.

Throwing another look of ridicule at the junior nurses, Erica muttered before leaving, "Can't even make a chart properly till now but will explain the schedule. What generation this is!"

"Do you have a system allocated for you?" Manila asked, completely ignoring the ridicule from Erica.

"I will be given by the end of the day or maybe tomorrow," he replied, ignoring their coy glances, unable to understand what they were giggling about. Early in the morning too, she had asked for the doughnuts, and when he got them, they had giggled the same way.

"You can use Dr. Caroline's system then. She prefers to use her own laptop and has asked us to use it whenever we need it."

"Are you sure?"

"Oh yeah!" Manila strutted towards Dr. Caroline's office, so Morpheous followed. Elora stayed at the station for a moment but then ran behind them.

They explained how the system worked, occasionally touching his arm and his wrist. But he didn't mind. He knew that some people from earth were more expressive.

Resting her palm on his shoulder, Elora was just explaining to him how to check the OT schedules when he saw Caroline approaching the chamber through the glass door.

Rotating the knob, she walked in, brushing her fingers through her hair, and he caught a whiff of her perfume. Kind of fruity and sweet. He suddenly wanted to inch closer. Close enough to smell her skin. But she seemed to be annoyed looking at him.

"What's going on here?" she questioned, her eyes narrowed as if he was an unwanted intruder.

'What happened to her? Why has she flipped?'

He immediately got up from her chair, wanting to explain to her that his sole intention was to understand the task assigned.

But it looked like she was not at all pleased.

Seeing her in a sour mood, the two nurses who had been eagerly helping him ran away.

Swiveling the chair on his opposite side, she immediately dictated a list of things to be done. He said yes to all of it, but couldn't help but stare at her. The dark sweep of hair that she had earlier pulled back into a bun had turned messy at the nape of her neck. Tendrils escaped and tickled her neck.

Momentarily, his finger twitched to twirl it around, but alas, that ghastly sin counter of his kept clocking in.

Closing his eyes, he calmed his breath for a second and then looked at her as she spoke.

"You will get a system for yourself, and I would very much appreciate it if my system isn't disturbed by anyone."

He couldn't understand what annoyed her. Him touching her system or him talking help from the nurses. "Sure will keep that in mind!" he said and silently walked out of the door, but that question was still itching inside his head.

So he turned, intending to ask what offended her, wanting to ask why she was looking at him with daggers for eyes, but his mouth gasped for air instead.

The creamy skin of her waist and back peeked out as she pulled up her top to wear her light blue scrubs. That delicate curve of her waist, her spotless skin, and that lingering fragrance of hers lured him, making him want to graze his fingertips. But drawing his eyes away, he silently walked away to avoid any awkwardness.

But heaven wasn't merciful on him. He came to the hospital to pave a path to heaven, but instead his sin counter clocked at 10997452188721.
