Luke didn't use the map until he left the wood in which the hut was situated. He was in front of a lake from where he could see a hilly meadow on the other side.
He took out the lighter and did as the fawn had said. He sniffed in the smoke and smiled at its characteristic scent. His eyes went shut, and in his lids, he saw smoke traveling over a lake that looked like the one he stood in front of. The smoke traveled along the hilly meadow, then he saw it descending to a settlement where hairy humanlike figures were. It cornered into a bend and traveled far into the distance, which he couldn't see. He opened his eyes and took in the half direction he got, believing it was one at a time.
To cross the lake to the other side was another problem. He looked far, but couldn't see anything that could get him across the river. What was left was to bank on the efficiency of his speed. He hadn't tried running across water ever since, but today, as a necessity, he'd do it.
