There were volcanic swamps with excessive Sulfur, then there were ones which grow around decomposing garbage in caves, and absorb methane. 

The variety is truly varied. 

It is a little excessive to lose some of the spores like this, but Jiushu would rather fail her legendary quest than lose her life.
