When they awoke the next morning, they had a quick breakfast of weak ale, bread, slices of beef, and hot eggs. The great room was quiet, and only a few people were breaking their fast at that early hour. It was such a change from the night before. The fire was lit, but it was low, more like a comforting friend than a roaring playmate, like last night. They all felt refreshed and invigorated for the long journey in front of them. Their spirits were lifted from the music, fun, and distraction of the night before. Even Maria, who usually looked sullen, had a bit more color to her cheeks.
"Did you see anyone last night?" asked Elaine. Alicia shook her head.
"No, but then again, I usually have to have very powerful drums to see anyone," she said.
"What do you mean?" asked Maria. She placed a bit of egg on her bread and bit into the combination.
"Alicia can see the spirits of those who have passed on when she dances," said Elaine.
