They leapt onto their horses. Elaine yanked the reins and kicked the horse's side, and they immediately sped off. Although she took the lead, she had no idea where she was going, or what would happen when they arrived. The others followed, barely behind her. The horses galloped down the road, throwing trails of dirt behind them. The thudding of the pursuing horses' hooves sounded like cannon fire to Elaine.
The pursuing knights kicked their horses viciously. Elaine could hear the horses' screaming protests. Although the wind blew cold and tore through her cloak, she felt hot and felt the sweat sticking to her back. Elaine could hear the horses' hooves pounding against the ground, the screech of their neighs, and her own haggard breathing. Their cloaks streamed behind them in the biting wind as they raced down the road.
