Chapter 50

The snow roared all around them. Rocks, dirt, and snow all mixed together in a tumultuous thunder. The snow seemed like a monster racing straight toward them, but somehow worse. This monster was as large as the mountain itself and was not technically alive, so it could not die. It just kept going, straight toward them, and the power of it nearly brought Elaine to her knees. It was like watching the ocean, infinite and unyielding.

And completely hell-bent on killing them.

It came on so fast that Elaine and the others did not have time to respond or think; they just ran. They tried to run back down, exactly the way they came. All that time, wasted. All the effort of climbing up the mountain, making slow, painful progress now meant nothing. Although Elaine was seized with fear, there was a huge part of her mind that screamed, "Mistake! Mistake!"

But she could not lament her mistakes right now. She had no room for guilt in her body.
