Chapter 57

The eagles were there, waiting for them, cocking their heads. They were huge, golden, and had eyes as big around as dinner plates. The gargoyle let out another blood-curdling shriek, and it sounded closer, ever closer. Elaine's heart beat hard in her chest. She looked around at the others; they looked as frightened as she felt.

"Come on!" shouted Elaine. "Let's go!"

She climbed up on one of the eagles. She eyed its sharp, wickedly curved beak and its sharp talons. Feeling very thankful that the eagle was on her side, she took her place on its back. She gripped its feathers in her hands and hoped that she was not hurting the eagle too much.

The others followed suit. It was a bit awkward at first, but then again, Elaine thought it would be a bit awkward to die, so she quickly got used to the feeling of riding without a harness. The eagle glanced at her, and Elaine swore that she saw a bit of mirth in its eyes.
