Twenty years later

The sun shone brightly on the palace as it peaked over the horizon. The castle was finished approximately fifteen years ago, and it was finally more like a house than a grand, sprawling castle. Gone were the tiny windows, the dark and gloomy dungeons, and relics of the past monarchs. Alicia had moved the capital nearer to the shoreline, not only to be closer to the ocean and have a more secure fortifications, but also to be near Mariel, whenever they wanted to visit.

The warm, summer morning promised a perfect afternoon of cool breezes, fresh air, and tranquility. Clouds scuttled across the sky, and the air held the scent of sweet grass, blooming flowers, and cedar from the forests. It would be a grand day for a picnic.

It was their annual tradition. Although they were scattered like the four winds during the year, everyone reunited for at least a day during the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.
