When the song ended, Katherine marched over to where they were standing, walked right up to them and said as cool as she could, "Hello Derrek."
The brief look of shock on his face was almost worth this wrenching in her heart. "Katherine, I-"
"It's fine, you don't have to explain anything," Katherine said. "I've seen enough. It's not like I've been waiting on you for months, without a single letter, without knowing if you were alive or dead. It's not like you promised me that you loved me before you left." As the words tumbled out of Katherine, she felt herself grow stronger, fiercer, with all the energy of the last three months suddenly released.
"It's not like I really even cared about you, either," she said, the words tumbling faster and faster out of Katherine, words that she didn't even mean, but wanted to be true, just so this would not hurt so badly.
