Katherine was bone-tired. After scrubbing Rani's ball gowns, washing all the windows, polishing the furniture, changing the fireplaces, and sewing patches in Rani's clothes, she felt ready to collapse on her bed. She was a bit grumpy from Harry's antics earlier, and still had not quite forgiven him yet.
"This came for you tonight, love," Katherine's mother said as she handed her a simple letter.
Katherine's heart started to beat a little faster. "Thank you, mother," she said, taking it. She told herself to quiet down. It was probably just a note from Rani, telling her some important task or other for tomorrow. Or from the servant-master with a long-winded explanation of how she could do a deal better cleaning the sheets with the lavender water instead of lemon.
But she took the stairs a bit faster and locked the door to her room, which she almost never did. She told her fingers to stop shaking.
