When the buzzer finally woke Vintner, there was already bright light shining in through the windows. Vintner sat up on his mattress. He grabbed his alarm clock and yanked the cord from the wall socket but the buzzing continued. Then Vintner realized where the buzzing was coming from. Someone was downstairs ringing his apartment buzzer. He had never heard the sound before. It was a soulless and irritating buzz, like the sound of a bug zapper frying a bug that wouldn't stop struggling. Vintner had yet to have a visitor to this apartment and had no plans of ever having one. He couldn't even think of a single person, other than his landlord, who knew where he lived. At first, he just let it buzz. He assumed that the person buzzing had happened on his buzzer by mistake and hoped that they'd go away.
